Easy-to-Access Brake Controller

Tekonsha POD Controls and Components

The Tekonsha POD is designed to mount in any direction, and it's especially suited for mounting on near-vertical dashes. All the controls are on the front of the module, so you can still access them with the controller tucked away in a convenient place.

Tekonsha POD review

Braking Output

Braking output is the maximum amount of power that will be applied to your trailer's brakes. How much braking output you need is determined by the weight of your trailer; a heavier trailer will need more power to bring it to a stop. You want to set the braking output as high as you can without locking up the brakes. Once you've set up the brake controller the first time, you shouldn't need to adjust the settings until the trailer load changes, you switch trailers, or road conditions change. Use the thumbwheel on the side to change the braking output level. The output setting will appear as a number on the digital display, with a higher number indicating higher braking power.

Manual Override

The Tekonsha POD keeps the manual override within easy reach on the front of the module, great for stopping sway or controlling your trailer's momentum in emergencies. Push the slide-bar lever to activate the trailer's brakes and brake lights without you having to apply the brakes on your tow vehicle, perfect for limiting trailer movement while you re cruising.

Quick, Simple Installation

Because inertia plays no role in the functioning of this controller, you do not have to mount the unit at any particular angle. Your mounting options are limitless, with the controller designed with all of the controls on the front of the module so you can access them even if it's mounted upside down.

If your vehicle already has a plug-in brake controller wiring harness, just connect the unit to it. Otherwise, you will need to purchase a vehicle-specific wiring harness (sold separately) to plug into. If a harness is unavailable for your vehicle, hardwiring will be necessary.

Installation Accessories

See also etrailer.com's exclusive 7- and 4-way brake control installation kit (ETBC7 - sold separately) if you don't already have a 7-way plug at the back of your vehicle.

Note: If a custom brake control wiring adapter is not available for your vehicle, a 20-amp circuit breaker (sold separately) may be required for installation.

Time-Delayed Braking

What is time-delayed braking

The Tekonsha POD comes equipped with time-delayed braking. Every time you apply the brakes in your vehicle, a signal is sent - via the brake switch - to the POD. The controller then sends power out to your trailer brakes to activate them with an intensity set by you, at a rate determined by you. The amount of braking power (output) can be adjusted to suit your preference, the road conditions, the type of trailer, and the weight of your load. To determine which levels are best for your application, test your towing setup and choose what feels right.

Installation of Tekonsha Brake Controller Adapter

Junction BoxBrake-Control Adapter Port

This adapter plugs into the port that is built into the electric junction box beneath your vehicle's dash. The black box is located to the left of the steering column, just above the carpet. To plug in the adapter, first remove the cover on the box. The adapter plugs into the second slot from the left, on the top row.

To install your electric brake controller you need to connect the wiring of the controller to your vehicle. Certain manufacturers offer pre-wired options, typically known as tow packages, wherein these wires are run for you from the dash to the trailer connector on the back of your vehicle. Often, a brake controller wiring harness is included with your tow package. This harness plugs into a port beneath your dash and connects to the four wires of the brake controller. If, however, you have a brake controller with a plug in place of the four loose wires, you can use the Tekonsha adapter.

This adapter requires no hardwiring. It is designed to plug directly into your electric brake controller for the simplest installation possible. Because there are no wires to connect, installation is not permanent. You can unplug and remove your brake controller at any time and securely stow it away.

Still working great, I forget its even there.

Great little brake controller for the money if you don't need heavy braking on a larger trailer. Simple and economic.

by: jim a06/09/2015

We have a Honda Ridgeline and needed this for our camper trailer. It was nice ordering the specific plug in wire for the Ridgeline and therefore eliminating hard wiring, just plugged it in. It was rough getting to the factory plug under the dash by the emergency brake petal switch. My hands are not small enough, ha ha. But success was had. Plugged into the controller and mounted it and u-wall-a. It works the way it is suppose to, I like that. A good quality unit that does what it is suppose to. thanks.

2002 ChevroletSilverado

The hitch and controller was installed on a 2002 Chevy 2500HD. It took roughly 15 min to install the Tekonsha P3 Brake Controller, plug it in and program it. As far as the B&W Turnover Ball Hitch, I cut the hole in the bed and cut the heat shield out the day before while I was waiting for the hitch to arrive. The next day my parts arrived, I laid out all the parts to make sure everything was there and then started the install. I didn't want to cut the 1"x1/2" notch out of my fender well to get the angle iron in so I spent about 15 min. trying to get it up on top the frame from underneath the truck. A waste of time. Do like the instructions say, cut the notch and slide it straight across the top of the frame. It will save time and aggravation. After getting both braces in place I ran a piece of rope down thru the hole and pulled the hitch plate up into place and tied it off. I installed all the bolts finger tight, put the side plates on and tightened everything up. It looks nice and I saved myself a $435.00 installation fee. With out a lift and without taking my rear tires off it took about 3 1/2 hrs. to install by myself. The only thing I want to say to B&W is don't place the heavy metal hitch parts on the booklet with the packets of Lithium Grease in it, they bust as the picture shows. Last but not least, thank you Sherry for all your help with my order and getting it to me quick in such short notice. I really appreciated it.

Great, and no problems

by: Michael B.03/08/2019

Very happy with this product. It fit nicely in my truck and plugged right into the factory wiring harness. Total installation time was under an hour. Easy to adjust, and works perfectly with my 5th wheel trailer. I simply pulled out the little storage cubby from the dash, cut the back off, slid the controller in, bolted it together, and stuck it all back in the dash. Looks and works great.

by: Rolando Torres07/11/2013

Easy to install in my Toyota-Tacoma 2012. I pull my Travel Trailer and this break controller worked very well and with just a little bit adjustment. Also this item was shipped very fast.

by: Richard03/12/2024

The quality of the adapter and customer service was very good. However, I must have ordered the wrong adapter as this on had an inline 4 plug and my controller had a square plug.

I have a Toyota Tacoma (06). I had the controller installed in less than five minutes. One minute to gather the tools: drill/bits, screw driver, and tape. I thought tape would be helpful to hold the ground screw to the driver given the tight are under the dash. One minute to drill the ground hole. One minute to install the ground screw. One minute to plug in the cables and fish the wire under the stirring wheel to allow for the controller to be mounted in the storage area found on Tacoma trucks dash. I guess I was wrong. It only took four minutes. I did not need to put the tools away I was off to do other projects. I rate the product as good because I have not tried it on the trailer yet.

by: Bill G.06/04/2017

I received my purchase very quickly.
I
just installed the control and wire harness today. Installation was easy, all you need are basic hand tools and a drill with a small bit.
Haven't had chance to test it out yet but, when I do I'll update.

by: Tom05/21/2021

Worked out perfectly for me, super easy installation with adapter harness. Work's flawlessly, easy one hand gain control with control's on front. My truck had nice cubby it fit in so out of the way and seamless look. Thanks for a great product and service.

Thanks to etrailer’s video “Trailer Brake Controller Installation - 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee”, the installation of a Tekonsha PowerTrac controller on my 2003 Jeep was very straight forward (and I’m not a car guy!). Like in the video, I used the wiring kit (#5506). I forgot to order a pigtail wiring harness but was able to pick one up locally. Took the trailer out last weekend and the brakes worked great.

I sell and install a variety of components for various companies and individuals. I have zero comebacks from this company. Not that I haven't received defective parts but they always make it right. And that is good business.

by: Caleb 02/07/2024

The controller was a great option for our 2021 forest river FSX and gave me plenty of control over the brakes. It does require a adjustment time to time but has always worked when brakes are applied. The setup and installation were a breeze and has worked for many trips.

by: Tim B.05/10/2013

The control works great. Nice incremental application of wheel from nothing to hard on! Led light goes from green to red also in incremental degrees. Installation was a snap in my 2008 F150 with tow package. Just Plug in the control clip and the other end in the terminal above and to the right of the computer check terminal. Rather than have it below my dash I opted for the cove below the lighter. Etrailer did a nice job of getting out to me right away and kept me informed where this was at all the way to my door. Good Job!

Have used the power track for a year with city and interstate travel and a 4000# single axle TT. Working flawlessly on my 20 Blazer using a bypass stoplight switch.

by: Patricia02/21/2024

The brake controller we purchased and had professionally installed works perfectly. We had it installed in our RV for use when towing a large vehicle trailer. It's reliable and simple. It was a great purchase!

Got this for my 2001 Silverado 3500. You can’t ask for anything more simple and self explanatory. Good quality harness. Been in the truck for a year now with no issues at all

by: Gary12/26/2020

The Tekonsha plug-in wiring adapter fit my 99 Silverado 1500 with not any issues at the fuse block. The length of the wire harness allowed me to install the brake controller in the CD storage for easy access and use.

Product arrived quickly and installed very easily. Plug and play with the correct adapter (3035-P Tekonsha Plug-In Wiring Adapter for Electric Brake Controllers - Ford, Lincoln, Mercury) for a 2001 Ford F-150. Controller is very easy to set the braking on your trailer.

by: Rick08/25/2018

Installed on 2003 Toyota Tundra with the factory tow package. Installation was a breeze with the included vehicle specific wiring adapter. It took me about 45 minutes total. Looks professionally installed. Easy to use. Set the adjustment for your specific trailer and go!

by: Jon W.05/15/2017

I ordered the powertrac with the 22292, 2011 ford F150 wiring adapter, It works great. 15 mins, and I had everything ready to go. It is a little sensitive to adjust but ones you get the feel for it, it takes no time to adjust. very happy with this unit, I would recommend this unit to everyone.

by: Douglas03/04/2024

This made the installation very easy, it was plug and play with this.

Didn't take long to get once I ordered it. Very easy to install. I used the video to help with the install. Can't wait to start camping. Would definitely use etrailer.com again and will recommend it to friends and family.

  • Tow Package Wiring Connections Under the Hood of a 2001 GMC Sierra with Factory 7-Way
  • First, you can see if power is getting back to the 7-Way by having someone sit in the truck and apply the manual override lever on the brake controller. While they are doing that use a circuit tester such as # PTW2993 or a meter if you have one to test the pin in the 5 o'clock position on the 7-Way. If power is getting to that location when testing, then the connection is already made, and you won't have to do anything. If the there is no power, you can run a wire manually from the

  • Pin Out for Brake Controller Install Harness that Fits 1999 Chevy Silverado
  • The correct brake controller install harness for your 1999 Chevy Silverado would be the part # 3025-P which I attached a picture of that details where each wire needs to be. I am not totally sure if I am reading what you said correctly but it does sound like your pin out is incorrect currently.

  • How to Disable OEM Brake Controller When Installing Aftermarket Controller
  • You can easily install an aftermarket controller in your 2013 Chevrolet Silverado 3500 that is compatible with your trailer's electric-over-hydraulic (EOH) brakes. The linked article illustrates the process of wiring in a EOH-compatible controller like the Prodigy P3 # 90195. If you follow these instructions you will disable the OEM controller and this change will not generate any trailer brake display messages on the driver information center. The article includes photos and a wiring guide. You

  • Parts Needed to Install a Trailer Brake Controller on a 1999 Chevy C/K Series 2500
  • Some of the 1999 Chevy trucks do have the port in the junction box at the back of the floor on the drivers side so you can plug in a brake controller. The proper harness for use with the P2 brake controller # 90885 is # 3025-P. Others do not have the junction box. Take a look at the picture I included. If you have this junction box on the drivers side floor then you can plug in a brake controller. If your truck did not come with a factory 7-Way trailer connector AND you can plug in the

  • Which Plug-In Adapter To Install Draw-Tite I-Command In 2002 GMC Sierra
  • The Tekonsha Plug-In Wiring Adapter for Electric Brake Controllers - GM # 3025-P is the correct adapter to install your Brake EVN # TK63VR in your 2002 GMC Sierra. This harness will plug into the factory fuse box underneath the dash as shown in the included picture, and then directly into your trailer brake controller so there is no splicing for the install. The # 3015-P you mentioned is for select GM trucks and SUVs made after 2003. You will want to use all of the factory fuses

  • Troubleshooting Brake Controller that Stopped Working after Rewiring 7-Way
  • The problem you have is somewhere in the recent rewiring of your trailer connector. It sounds like there is at least one short on the wiring that is preventing the brake output circuit from functioning. Check to see if the running light circuit is possible shorting out to the brake output circuit. I attached a diagram that shows how 7-way should get wire that may be helpful as well. I also attached a help article on brake controller troubleshooting as well.

  • Install Harness Recommendation for 2002 Chevy Suburban with 7-Way
  • All you need to install a Prodigy P2 # 90885 in your 2002 Chevy Suburban is the correct install harness. For that you would need the part # 3025-P. This will work great with the RV style 7-way trailer connector you have and does not require you to install a 4-way.

  • Parts Needed to Add 7 Way and Brake Controller to 1998 Chevrolet Truck
  • To add a brake controller to your truck and swap out the connector with a 7 way you'll need a few parts. You'll need a working 4 pole flat trailer connector (which you said is currently on the truck), the Universal Installation Kit for Trailer Brake Controller # ETBC7 and a brake controller. The ETBC7 kit comes with all the connectors, breakers, and wires to get a brake controller installed and a 7 way at the back of your truck. The 4 pole wiring will plug into the ETBC7 and then wires

  • No Power on Brake Controller Red Wire
  • What is the year, make, and model of the vehicle? The red brake controller wire should only be getting power when you step on the brake pedal. If you are not getting any power on that wire with the brake pedal depressed then you may have it attached to the wrong brake switch wire (if it is hardwired into the vehicle), the red wire is in the wrong location in the plug (if it is a plug in application) or you have a blown stop light or CHMSL fuse. I would need to know the year, make, and

  • Brake Controller and Wiring Adapter for a 2002 Chevy Suburban
  • Although your friends Suburban might be equipped with the factory tow package, the package did not include a brake controller like it sometimes does in later models. A controller will need to be installed. Not to worry, though. Installing a controller will be simple. If he does not already have a controller, I would recommend the Tekonsha Prodigy P2, part # 90885. The wiring adapter, part # 3025-P will also be needed. One end of the adapter would plug into the rear of the P2, the other

  • How to Install a Brake Controller on a 2000 Chevy Express 1500
  • Sounds like your 2000 Chevy Express Van 1500 has a factory 7-way at the rear of the vehicle (if not I'll address that too later). Express vans like yours with the 7-Way tow package have the blue output brake wire already ran from the back to the front. It is located under the dash near the emergency brake pedal. There isn't a plug-in adapter that will work on your vehicle to install a brake controller as there isn't a port under the dash for that. You will basically need to run the

  • Tekonsha Trailer Brake Wire Harness, # 3025-P, Recommendation for 2000 Chevy Truck
  • The difference between the 3025-P and the 3015-P is the pin locations of the wires on the orange connector. The reason for this is because the orange connector on 3025-P is wired to work on most GM vehicles from 1999-2002, such as your 2000 Chevy Pickup. The 3015-P is wired to work on most GM vehicles from 2003-2006. The orange connector on both harnesses are the same, but the pin locations for the different wires are different. It sounds like you have 3015-P and the wires are not making
