Brake Controller and Wiring Adapter for a 2002 Chevy Suburban

Question:

My friend is going to borrow my trailer. The trailer is a 1990 23 Terry. It has elect. brakes. His tow vehicle is a 2002 Chevy Suburban. The chevy has a 7 prong adapter at the hitch. The trailer has a 7 prong plug. My question is do we only need to install a brake controller in the chevy? Does a controller ever come install in a trailer towing package

Although your friends Suburban might be equipped with the factory tow package, the package did not include a brake controller like it sometimes does in later models. A controller will need to be installed.

Not to worry, though. Installing a controller will be simple. If he does not already have a controller, I would recommend the Tekonsha Prodigy P2, part # 90885. The wiring adapter, part # 3025-P will also be needed. One end of the adapter would plug into the rear of the P2, the other plugs into the port located under the dash near the emergency brake pedal. Remove the black cover over the junction box, and plug the connector into the second location from the left in the top row of the junction box.

I've linked you to an install video showing a brake controller being installed on a 2001 GMC Yukon. The procedure on your Suburban would be identical.

If the controller used does not have a connector on it and the wiring ends in bare wires, simply cut the black connector off the end of the 3025-P and wire it to the brake controller, color for color.
