The 1998 GMC and Chevy C/K series trucks weren't prewired for a brake controller like the newer trucks were, so you'd need to hardwire the controller which is a pretty simple process. Along with the # 39523 brake controller, you'll also need the # ETBC7 brake controller installation kit. If you don't already have a 4-pole trailer connector to tap into the lighting circuits, you'll also need a T-connector, part # 118315.
The install kit includes all the wire, circuit breakers and hardware needed to successfully complete the installation. An adapter to convert the 4-pole provided by the # 118315 to a 7-way connector is also provided.
I've linked to an install video showing a brake controller being installed on a C/K series truck. The video shows a different controller being used, but the procedure for the # 39523 would be exactly the same.
