Actually you'll need a different brake controller as the part # 39523 is not compatible with the wiring of your 2017 Ram 1500. The 2017 Ram 1500 has "Powernet" and utilizes multiplex wiring that is different from previous models. The terminal that used to be the stop light signal now has battery voltage whenever the ignition is in the run position so you need a brake controller capable of interpreting this which the # 39523 cannot.
For a similar controller that is compatible we have the # tk90160 which will then require the install harness # 3024-P. Since you have to go with a new controller I'd recommend one that's is designed for safer braking.
For a brake controller I would recommend the Prodigy P3 Brake Controller part # 90195. This is our best selling brake controller because of how well it works and how easy it is to setup. This is a proportional brake controller that senses the amount of braking the tow vehicle is applying and applies a proportionate amount to the trailer brakes. This will be the last brake controller you buy. It can easily be transferred to future vehicles as well.
