Parts Needed to Add 7 Way and Brake Controller to 1998 Chevrolet Truck

Question:

What do I need to add a brake controller to my truck and change my flat wiring prong at hitch to a 7way ever plug? Is there any wiring kits I need? Thanks

To add a brake controller to your truck and swap out the connector with a 7 way you'll need a few parts. You'll need a working 4 pole flat trailer connector (which you said is currently on the truck), the Universal Installation Kit for Trailer Brake Controller # ETBC7 and a brake controller. The ETBC7 kit comes with all the connectors, breakers, and wires to get a brake controller installed and a 7 way at the back of your truck.

The 4 pole wiring will plug into the ETBC7 and then wires are ran to the battery and in to the cab for the brake controller. I included a diagram of how the ETBC7 wires in.

If you don't have a working 4 pole trailer connector (in case the one you have is a 5 flat) you can use T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector # 118315.

For a brake controller I recommend Draw-Tite I-Command Trailer Brake Controller # TK63VR. It's a proportional brake controller compared to the older time delayed style. Which means more predictable and smoother braking for your trailer. It works with trailers that have 1 to 4 axles, and is designed for electric trailer brakes.

Since Chevy uses side bolt style terminals on their batteries I recommend using Battery Side Bolt Extender # DW05416 when you go to make the connections. It makes it much easier to put the ring terminals on the battery and not have to worry about stripping it out.

I linked the parts mentioned above, along with some videos of similar year trucks for you to check out as reference.
