Video Transcript for Lockrack Surfboard Rack Review

Hi, everyone. Aiden here with etrailer. Today we're gonna be taking a look at the LOCKRACK Surfboard Carrier for your roof. This is a great way to carry a surfboard with you on your roof rack if you don't want to have to mess with straps but you still want a strong and secure hold on your board. These are adjustable to fit a variety of different widths that will cover later in the video. And this is gonna be their kit that uses the universal mount, which means it just clamps around your crossbars rather than sliding into the T-track up top.

Now luckily this kit does come with everything you need that you can channel mount it if you want to down the line or you get a different roof rack. But the way it comes right now it's set up to use these clamps. So if you don't have T-track or you just don't wanna mess with it then this is gonna be the kit for you. Let's check it out. So as you saw already, it is sturdy, not going anywhere and it's full of rubber padding all along the base, the sides and the arms.

So our board is gripped and protected. These arms due to their shape it's gonna prevent the board from moving up because they're tapered inward. So we're protected against that. And because it's gripping around the thickest part of the board here it can't slide forward because it's gonna hit a wider part and it can't slide back for the same reason. So it's all clamped in, so side to side, front to back, up and down.

It's all secured in there and trapped in place and that's what allows this to be carried without the use of straps. Now as far as adjustment goes all of these holes that you see along the arms are different locking points for the different widths. So in its most narrow position, it's going to be able to hold anything that is 15 inches wide and that's the measurement from inside pad to inside pad. And then at the widest state it's gonna be up to 28 inches wide. So a wide range of adjustment there.

And the way you make those adjustments is by sliding it in and just pushing. You'll hear those clicks and usually you can get one or two more clicks out of it to make sure that it's making good contact. Those rubber pads are gripping our gear and it's locked in place. Whenever you're done you can take the included key piece here, slide it in to this block here and give it a turn to disengage it and pull these arms out for unloading. Now because of the system, yes, it's nice you don't have to deal with straps when setting up but I think what's even nicer is how quick it is because whenever you are loading or unloading I don't wanna be climbing up on my roof and spending a lot of time up there loading my gear. With this though, it's very quick to get unloaded and the same for the reverse process. Just set it up in place, grab those arms and then just push 'em in to the proper spot for your gear and you can just leave that other side locked in place. So the only thing you have to mess with whenever you're out is these outside arms that are the easiest ones to reach. Then you're ready to go. Now as it stands right now you can definitely tell we're adding height to the roof. From the top of the crossbar to the top of this arm right here is about 10 inches and that is a little bit taller because we're using these universal clamp mounts. They add just a little bit more height than the channel mounted ones maybe about 1/2 an inch, so not much, but something. Depending on the surfboard you have you might be adding a little bit more height than that 10 inches. Ours it sat pretty much right in line with it or a little below so it wasn't a concern. But if you wanna leave this on your roof between uses, maybe you're someone that goes out and surfs very frequently and you don't want to have to deal with the setup process on your roof every time, you don't have to. Just hold it down to the side. So all of these adjustment holes in the side just turn this over and there's one more hole in the bottom that's going to line up in the exact same spot for those arms and lock them in place at a much lower height now. In this position we're only sticking up about 2-1/2 inches, just a little bit under 2-1/2 inches from the top of the crossbar to the top of the carrier. So much easier to pull into your garage or drive around with without the worry of height clearance issues. Now obviously that will depend on your vehicle with a low to the ground car like this I think it's gonna be no problem but check your own vehicle in your own garage to make sure that you have the clearance still. And here's what that looks like fully folded up. A lot more compact and easy to drive around with. The one complaint I have is not really even that big of a complaint, but the arms just look a little bit goofy facing alternate directions like this. So if you are gonna leave it up here long term just something to keep in mind. Maybe if you've got a sunroof or something up front that you like to open that you're gonna have this in the way of it but I don't think it's gonna be anything that interferes at least not any more than your roof rack already does. And then the keys here that we use to unlock these arms are on opposite side. So these ones on the outside edge are very easy to reach but the center one here closer to the middle of the vehicle you probably have to climb up into the door jamb of the vehicle to operate it and actually pull the arm out. 'Cause I have to reach so far towards the center for setup here. But if you're someone that leaves this on the roof all the time, once you get this into the proper position for your gear, probably just set it and forget it and you don't have to mess with it. And the only thing you're interacting with is the stuff that's easily reachable. But if you want to take it down into that folded position this is probably what it's gonna look like and it will be just a little bit more involved and maybe involved getting your dirty shoes into the door jamb of your vehicle. The universal amounts work pretty well for keeping everything stable. You saw that earlier and they're pretty easy to operate. These Allen head screws will just go around your crossbars and into some nuts on the underside of these clamps right here and you can just keep 'em loose until you get the spacing adjusted and then tighten it down for an easy hold. Underneath this top clamp is where that channel mounted T-bolt would be. We just use that to secure into that clamp instead. But if we took it out, that's what we'd use to slide into the T-track of our roof rack if we wanted to. And then up top, it's just held in by a 10 millimeter nut. Now all the rubber padding here is very thick and feels high quality and all the metal components are gonna be constructed of aluminum, keeping everything very lightweight and easy to work with. But also I don't worry about it rusting and corroding over time, especially with this carrying surfboards. I want it to hold up to moisture and not have to worry about it. And that's really all there is to it. I think where the lock rack really excels is the ease of use. If you're looking to carry a surfboard, for me, this is the way I would certainly do it. Now if you're looking at this thinking that you maybe got a standup paddleboard or a kayak and you like this style, this isn't gonna be the one for you 'cause it's too small. But they do make other sizes for those other water sports uses. So if you like this, go to our site check out the other options available all the bigger sizes to see what fits for your gear. It's all gonna operate the exact same way. So if this works for you and your roof and your gear then this is just been our look at the LOCKRACK Surfboard Carrier with the universal clamp mounts. Thanks for watching.

The keys are an issue (wish they were metal), but everything else is great! I go sunrise kayaking only and hate putting straps on with cold hands at 3:30 in the morning. I have a Nissan Pathfinder and was able to put this on with another set of Malone J-hooks so that I can have a second kayak when I go with someone. Once the fear subsides of it possibly falling off, you realize how quick and easy this thing is to use. It takes me 1 minute instead of 9-18 minutes to get my kayak up and secure. I have tested it at 75mph without any jiggling or issues. I sat on this in my shopping cart forever and finally pulled the trigger. If you kayak at least 10 times a year or are going at high speeds for extended periods of time in warm weather, totally worth it. If not, well, there are cheaper options out there.

I installed the racks on my vehicle and the Rubber for Lockrack 9-7/8" Base blew off of the racks before I ever got to put a board on them now they want $80 to replace all four of them… I just spent over $400 for the rack and I’ve already got about $80 worth of replacement parts. I guess I should’ve glued them on also it may say they lock but anybody else who buys one will have the same key plus the installation bolts are not tamper proof either.

by:

Rec'd earlier this week, so today i will install. The item was obviously a return. The logos are nearly scratched off in places, all the items were loosely thrown in the box, and the 10mm wrench and hex key were missing. i think everything else is there. The keys should be a bright color instead of black, some spray paint will fix that. Anyhoo, i am a little disappointed.

Great company and customer service. The product was shipped quickly and arrived in a few days. The Lockrack is awesome. I use it for surfboards. It’s so easy to use. I have been using the product for several years and am very pleased with how simple and durable it is.

by:

I mounted it on my Yakima racks. Very easy to do (directions could really be improved by having someone describe the steps more clearly). I have not used this. Could be a month or so. However, initially, it looks good. Too bad the angled arms that hold the kayak are not adjustable depending on the angle needed.

by:

Wow I am loving my new set up Thank you Nicole and etrailer for all your help in getting the right look and fit

by:

This is the best and quick way to transport your sup, surf ski, OC etc. load and lock in 10 second. Secured and effective set up. Couldn’t be happier with the purchase.

by:

Easy installation. Secure. No straps required. Drove 8 hours up to 80 mph, didn’t move.

by:

Awesome invention. Greatly reduced the amount of time and frustration usually associated with loading up our 2 SUPs and small sport kayak. It does take some time to install but that is expected. Don't assume the initial installation is a 10-minute job. However, once the system is in place, loading and locking the SUPs and kayak was simple and quick. We did have to experiment a bit with the best combination to make everything fit. I was hoping we could fit three SUPs on one rack, but no chance. My only complaint is that the keys provided are plastic, and strip very easily when unlocking the bars to remove or make adjustments. Without a key, your stuff is stuck. We hope that LockRack with come up with a more sturdy, metal replacement key for this system.

by:

I had doubts when I first opened the box. No way would this thing hold my boat. My yak is a loaded 13' beast suitable for ocean and large lake fishing. Well over 100 lbs. I was tempted to return the rack but decided to install it, and let me tell you this Lockrack thing is as solid as a rock. I can cruise at 65 mph and my big old fishing yak doesn't wiggle, not one little bit. It's EXACTLY what I was looking for. Thank you!!!

by:

Unfortunately I did not have the best of luck with this product . I spoke with the company multiple times to ensure this would work with my rack. It did not. This system is made to work ONLY on a roof rack . I have a truck with a rack and a slot in the middle . We had to make different bolts and holders to install this. For using 2 Paddleboards we also had to modify the back of the racks holders to actually touch the boards to hold them in place . After the modifications and many many adjustments we have it working and it does hold great.

by:

Great Quality; love ease of use, especially as a woman; snug fit. love how they look on my SUV. LOVE!

by:

Great substitution for the original lock rack. The only major difference is the arms. They are straight, and not bent like the OG lock racks are. They work great! I ordered the adjustable base (21" minimum) to match the other rack. These are great!

by:

The lock rack is an awesome product and a must have for any surfer. Very courteous and professional staff, they updated me promptly about the status of my order. Will definitely be using them again.

by:

These racks are perfect. Easiest and most secure way to carry my sup.

by:

Fast shipping and great product. The lockrack XL watersport carrier is perfect for my hobie pro angler 12. It's strong enough to handle the weight of the pro angler 12. I still use a tie down to strap it to my Rhino-Rack. Overall great product.

by:

I picked excellent because it will eliminate climbing on a ladder to put on straps. When I first looked at it mounted on my car I never thought it would be secure. I recruited my neighbor to see if I could side load using a small stepstool. (I am 5'3"). With my old Thule rack I could cover the back of my car with a rug and slide my kayaks on up to the roof. Fortunately, I have a very light Eddyline kayak that I use most of the time, so for this kayak it is manageable. When I secured the kayak with the arms, I was surprised how tight it was with absolutely no movement. Haven't driven with it yet but I am sure that it will work well. The only problem I had was it took all afternoon to put it together. I think you need to improve the photos and have more detailed instructions. A current installation video with this newer designed kayak rack. The videos I found had several different arms.

by:

I'm very happy with this purchase, They installed very easily and the adjustments were easy to do and secured my kayak with ease.

by:

Very sturdy and easy to use as a solo paddler loading it on my own. I just leave one side facing up and once kayaks on the roof, slide the other 2 arms to lock it in place, then put a strap around it for extra security if im traveling far

by:

Did not include all the parts in the box

by:

They work very well, Good product!

by:

I chose this product because I feel as though it will secure my kayak with minimal damage. I used cam straps in the past and they create so much pressure on the top and bottom side of the kayak. The Lockrack allows you to secure your kayak without applying a lot of pressure, plus it provides security from theft.

by:

Original package was damaged during shipment, but Customer Service resolved the issue with no friction. Great experience. Lockrack is the easiest to use rack I’ve used. 30 seconds or less to load and unload kayak and paddle boards.

I would give it 4.5 stars if I could. Only cons are a slightly difficult installation and the quality of the plastic keys used to unlock the arms. Highly recommend the product.

I use the Lockrack system to transport an inflatable stand up paddleboard. I know, seem counterintuitive, but while we transport our two boards in their deflated state for long distances (beach trips), they get more use locally if you can leave it inflated and toss it on the car and go. The Lockrack system is genius, and avoids all the fuss with ratcheting straps down, and hoping they are secure. Since these racks are not widely used from what I gather, it is somewhat difficult to determine the specs, and there are not a large number of reviews with specific examples of what can be carried. So for what it's worth, it CANNOT carry two inflatable paddleboards- specifically the Tower Adventurer 2 models. It might be able to fit a second board if it was the racing model (skinnier in width), and the composite SUPs are likely not as tall, so it really just depends on what you have. I already had a classic Lockrack double SUP rack (that only fit one of my inflatable boards), and was hoping the XL expandable rack would allow for both boards, but at max expansion it is actually the same width as the classic, non-expandable Lockrack. I think the XL adds a few inches extra height, but nothing in terms of width. So while I'm returning the XL model, it is not for lack of appreciation of what it can do. One day we'll upgrade to boards that can both fit, but for now, even cutting the time in half and inflating one board instead of two is reward enough. I don't own a kayak or canoe, but after watching friends struggle with transport, I would highly recommend the Lockrack system for that as well.

by:

I love this rack. It fits my double ocean kayak perfectly. It was easy to install and now I don’t have to do the tie downs that the other racks require. Also I can take it on out of town trips as it locks my kayak onto the rack. Finally somebody designed a easy lockable kayak rack. This product is a must have.
