Stacked-plate heat exchangers have long been considered the most effective type of oil or transmission coolers, primarily because of their increased surface area. Allowing fluid to spread out over this larger surface area decreases the time required for heat transfer to take place. As a result, plate coolers typically manage to cool a greater volume of fluid faster than tube-and-fin, or even plate-and-fin, varieties. Add to that a powerful tornado fan that ensures optimum airflow at all times, no matter the environment, and you have a super-efficient heat exchange unit.

Awesome product! Received it yesterday. Custom fabricated brackets for it to mount below my auxiliary trans cooler on my 07 fx4 f150. Installed the on off switch on out side of transmission and the fan works great! 91798
excellent quality product, I have intalled the fan/cooler on a toyota highlander 2010 without tow package not infront of the a/c radiator but exactly at the same place as toyota install the oem transmission cooler just behind the right fog light. I have a travel trailer of 3300 lbs dry, (4000lbs gross weight) and before my transmission temperature was around 215-220 F with a standard transmission cooler(without a fan) infront of the a/c radiator, but now with my new derale fan cooler, its around 180F after a long climb. I am totally satisfied. I had to build a bracket to fit the cooler in this tiny space behind the fog light, it took me 6-7 hours .141122

Mounted between fuel tank and transfer case. Larger 6.0 cooler would go in front of intercooler. Dont need anymore heat there. This was cheaper and works great in this position. Wrapped exhaust near the lines as they have to dump out on right side of trans. and I did not want any hard 90 degree turns with all this extra plumbing. Keeps temps way lower. Also installed oversize/cooler pan.
FYI using temp sensors in pan and in valve body. Pan is regularly 30 degrees cooler than valve body.438701

I was very impressed on quality and ruggedness. Its heavy and works great. This is a must in South Texas especially pulling a trail. 707159
Love my engine oil cooler. I was having overheating problems with my Dodge truck while towing on a hot day. I asked the guys at etrailer if I should add a bigger radiator, and engine oil cooler or another tranny cooler. They nailed it when they recommended a supplemental engine oil cooler. I now can town my fifth wheel RV trailer on the hottest days and in the mountains without overheating. I do still have to watch the temps and if they start to get over 260 f or so I downshift a gear or two to get greater fluid flows. The only reason I am not giving this 5 stars is that with the supplied hose clamps I was plagued with constant slow leaks. I finally bought a much higher end hose Clamp which did solve the problem.268306

I was surprised at the lack of feedback on these products, and the differences in opinions. I tow a fare amount, between 7000lbs and 9500lbs. My vehicle is a 2013 Dodge Ram 1500 with the 8 speed transmission. ( outside temperature 20-30 deg Celsius ). Before I installed this engine cooler my temperature ran around 115 deg Celsius on a flat pull and 130 - 135 deg Celsius on most hills. After a hill it took a long time to drop in temperature, most time it hardly dropped. Now I rarely see 115 deg Celsius on a hill, and recovers to 100 deg Celsius very quickly. So in short I'm very happy with this product. I would recommend it to anyone that Tows.738161

Excellent product, quality parts and fittings for multiple installation platforms. Took about 4 hours to install but was a custom install under bed of truck. 851881

Appears to be well-built and wasn't too hard to plumb in series with the existing oil cooler. Unfortunately with my 2010 Suburban it did not make any difference in the oil sump temperature shown by the computer - either daily driving or while towing. I plan on borrowing a laser thermometer to see what the actual input/output temps are.230261

See what our Experts say about this Derale Transmission Coolers
We definitely have had people install an aftermarket transmission cooler on their Nissan Pathfinder before so it is possible, but I would be surprised if that was something that Nissan would be okay with under their warranty. It is our understanding that the transmission cooler is actually inside the radiator.
If you were to go this route then you will need to find the largest aftermarket cooler you can find. For this application I recommend the Derale Hyper-Cool Remote Transmission Cooler... view full answer...
A supplemental transmission cooler would be a great option for your 2012 Ford F-150 to keep the transmission fluid down like with the Derale part # D13503 which is a larger size and also a style that is very efficient. view full answer...
For your 2013 Sierra 1500, I recommend mounting the Derale Hyper-Cool Remote Transmission Cooler Kit w/ Fan, -6 AN Inlets - Class V, # D13960, using your second option. I'd leave the stock cooler alone and mount the Derale cooler with fan in front of the passenger wheel well. The stock cooler location will allow that cooler to function at its potential and then you can add the Derale cooler, which can function almost anywhere with its attached fan to further cool your transmission. -6 AN fittings are a specific threaded fitting size. The Derale Hyper-Cool Remote Transmission Cooler Kit w/ Fan, -6 AN Inlets - Class V # D13960 has the specific fittings you mentioned but it also comes with the barb fittings that simply use a hose clamp. On this cooler, the lines attach to the sides of the cooler. This transmission cooler has internal turbulators for superior heat transfer. I've attached an installation video of a similar transmission cooler for you to view.

The Derale Hyper-Cool Remote Engine Cooler Kit w/ Fan # D15660 for oil cooling can be mounted anywhere you have the space in your Jeep Cherokee XJ. The unit will be 13 x 10 x 5-5/8 inches total, so you simply need that space. The remote location with fan will allow mounting in any location with that space allotment as opposed to in front of or behind the radiator if a fan were not present.

I verified with my contact at Derale that the Derale Hyper-Cool Transmission Cooler, # D15960, will work to bypass your radiator and cool your transmission fluid. One important thing to consider when installing a transmission cooler is the size of your transmission lines. If the diameter of your transmission lines are 1/2 inch in diameter, then you will want to go with the transmission cooler that you referenced. If your transmission lines are 3/8 inch in diameter, then you will want the... view full answer...
The Derale Hyper-Cool Remote Transmission Cooler Kit # D13960 would be an outstanding choice to add to your 2020 Toyota 4Runner with a 4.0L V6 engine. The reason is because it's a stacked-plate cooler, which means it gives you the most surface area with which to cool fluids.
As for mounting, there isn't a recommended or suggested spot on specific vehicles for these types of coolers. They are designed in order to fit in any location where there is space, and an experienced installer will... view full answer...
For a fan-powered remote transmission cooler for your 2009 Toyota Sienna I recommend the Derale Class V Hyper-Cool # D13960.
This high-efficiency stacked-plate cooler kit includes the cooler, fittings, hose and all hardware required for installation. The fan's 500-CFM (cubic-feet-per-minute) airflow cools your transmission fluid no matter your driving speed, unlike passive coolers like the Derale # D13503 that rely on air flow from your driving speed to cool your transmission.

Generally speaking, you won't want to run a larger line into a smaller opening with an adapter because the difference will create a buildup of pressure that will likely cause the line to burst, but running a smaller inlet into a larger port is possible. I checked with Derale and they mentioned that running a smaller line into a larger port just means that not as much fluid is going to be pushed into the cooler and it will run less efficiently, but it won't damage the cooler.

We can help you with a supplementary transmission cooler for your 2009 Nissan Armada SE 2WD to reduce its operating temperature when you tow your new Forest River travel trailer.
For a standard passive cooler that mounts in front of your AC condenser I suggest the Derale Class III model # D13503. This will provide significant additional cooling of your transmission fluid. For a higher-capacity passive option the Class IV model # D13613 is a good choice.

For as big of a truck as you have I would go with the Derale Hyper-Cool Remote Mount Transmission Cooler part # D13960. This is Class V stacked plate cooler (the most efficient style of cooler) with a fan that can flow 500 cfm of airflow that would do very well.
This kit also includes all of the necessary rubber lines and hoses to install on your vehicle.
I attached a couple FAQ articles on transmission coolers for you to check out as well. view full answer...
I would go with the Derale Hyper-Cool Remote Transmission Cooler Kit w/ Fan # D13960 since this one comes with all of the installation hardware and lines unlike the # D13870 that you referenced.
The cooler on this setup is a stacked plate design which is the most efficient style on the market and the fan will flow 500 cfm of air through the cooler to keep the temperatures down.
If your transmission temp gauge is maxing out then I would strongly urge you to install this product so that... view full answer...
I spoke with my contact at Derale and he said that your 2012 model Chevy Suburban 1500 uses 1/2 inch transmission lines so the Derale Hyper-Cool Transmission Cooler # D13960 won't be the best option.
For your Suburban you will instead want the Derale Hyper-Cool # D15960 which is essentially the same cooler with fan but designed to work with the 1/2 inch lines. An adapter isn't needed as the compression fitting that comes included with this cooler should work perfectly.

It's definitely not abnormal for your transmission fluid to heat up while towing, especially when you're going up hills that force the truck to work a lot harder. To help with this adding a transmission cooler like you mentioned is a great idea.
For your 2005 Chevy Silverado 2500HD I highly recommend the Derale Hyper-Cool Remote Transmission Cooler Kit w/ Fan # D13960. This cooler will do a great job of improving the performance and function of your transmission with its reversible tornado... view full answer...
We currently have 6 transmission coolers that are recommended for your 1996 Ford F-250 with 7.3 liter diesel engine. I have included a link to them below. Even though the Derale Hyper-Cool Remote Transmission Cooler Kit with Fan, -6 AN Inlets - Class V, # D13960, is not on that list, transmission coolers are not technically vehicle specific, so you could install it on your truck with the proper sized fittings.
The D13960 comes with -6 AN x 3/8 inch hose barb adapter and one of the recommended... view full answer...
I contacted our representative at Derale and he informed me that the Derale Hyper-Cool Remote Transmission Cooler Kit With Fan, part # D13960, can be amounted anywhere. Since it uses a fan for cooling, it is not necessary to use the radiator for cooling as the fan is strong enough to provide cooling power.
It may be beneficial for more cooling efficiency if you can mount it in front of the radiator, behind the bumper, but it is not required. Transmission fluid cannot be cooled too much... view full answer...
The difference between the kits is the size AN fittings that come with either. Aside from that it's the same coolers and the same fans. The Derale Hyper-Cool Remote Transmission Cooler # D13960 comes with -6 AN inlet fittings and the part # D15960 comes with -8 AN fittings.
-6 means the hose is 3/8 inch diameter and -8 means 1/2 inch diameter. The bigger the diameter the more fluid can flow through it. Either are a great option for your truck. view full answer...
Yes you could install the Derale HyperCool Remote Mount Transmission Cooler part # D13960 in front of your radiator. To reverse the direction of the fan you'd just need to reverse the polarity of the wires for it and you'd be set. view full answer...
A supplementary transmission cooler is an excellent addition to almost any towing vehicle and we have options for your 2012 Chevrolet Suburban 5.3L.
If you have the specific transmission model 4L80E in your Suburban you can use pan-style cooler # D14207 from Derale. The benefit of a bolt-on pan cooler is that you actually add fluid capacity to your transmission system. This item does not simply radiate away heat like # D13503; it both radiates heat away and cools additionally by letting... view full answer...
A large cooler like # D13105 that you have referenced would be a good choice. The larger the cooler and the more airflow it can get the more efficient it will be in cooling the transmission fluid. You may also need to add fitting # D13025 so you will not have to cut and flare lines.
But I think you would benefit more from a remote cooler that has its own fan like # D13960. That way you will always get the optimum amount of cooling all the time. I have included a link to our FAQ article... view full answer...
One really efficient and larger transmission cooler would be all that you'd need. In theory, the more the better but in reality one really good one would be all that you'd need.
The Derale Hyper Cool part # D13960 is a stacked plate style of cooler with a built in fan which would be more than adequate. The stacked plate coolers are by far the most efficient and the fan ensures that you'd always have enough airflow to cool the fluid. It also allows you to mount basically anywhere as it... view full answer...
Cooler failure is VERY expensive! That's why I recommend getting a Class V cooler like # D13960. This one comes with a fan too which is nice especially when your not moving much in the heat hauling something. Since you want to cool both engine oil and transmission fluid for a demanding off-road racing application I suggest you go with two separate coolers rather than a dual-core combination cooler.
My contact at Derale confirmed the best options for your FJ Cruiser are their # D13960 Class V fan-powered Hyper-Cool Remote Transmission Cooler and their # D15660 Hyper-Cool Remote Engine Cooler. The correct replacement thermostat for the Derale Hyper-Cool Remote Transmission Cooler Kits like part # D13960 or part # D15660 is the Replacement Thermostat for Derale Fan Controls part # D16728.
