Some vehicles operate on a 3-wire system, wherein the brake signal and the turn signals run on separate wires to illuminate different lights. (Typically, these vehicles have amber turn signals.) But most trailers run on a 2-wire system, which means the brake and turn signals travel along a single wire. You'll notice that, on your trailer, the brake light will flash for the turn signals.
If your vehicle operates on a 3-wire system, it will need to be converted so it will be compatible with the wiring system of your trailer. This is where a tail light converter comes into play. This converter lets you combine the brake and turn signal functions of your vehicle so they run on a single wire to properly activate your trailer's tail lights.

To begin the installation, use a circuit tester (sold separately) to double-check the function of each wire on your vehicle's tail light wiring harness. The color/function of the splice-in wires on this converter may not match the color/function of those on your vehicle, so you'll want to be sure to check all of the wire functions first. Once you've figured out the functions of your vehicle's wiring, use quick-splice or butt connectors (sold separately) to connect the corresponding wires on the trailer connector.
Because this doesn't have a separate box, you don't have to worry about mounting it. But if you want to keep the harness from hanging or dragging the ground, you can install a 4-way flat mounting bracket.
Find a raw, unpainted metal surface to use as a grounding point and secure the white ground wire with a self-tapping screw (sold separately). Cleaning the surface prior to securing the white wire will ensure the converter is fully grounded. Finally, secure the converter wires to your vehicle using cable ties (sold separately).

Installation hardware sold separately.I used the Hopkins 3 to 2 converter to make a 6-pin round to 4-flat connector for my Winnebago View motorhome. While there are 6-4 plugs available to do this, they do not work on the Winnebago View (no brake lights). This adaptor works great.
This device was no help in connecting my five wire trailer to my four wire goldwing. I ended up having to use a number of diodes in the trailer wiring to make everything work properly. My trailer had red LEDs that were used for Brake, Turn & stop and I had to get the brake and turn function to share the same lead on the light fixture.
Well this is the second one I bought go bad so I just added extra lights and changed trailer plug from 4 to 6 round plug. One failed after using and the other one never worked from the start. All that would work were tail lights.
I have an older foreign car and tow constantly. This has worked very well. This little converter gets me from the odd multi prong euro plug to a standard trailer plug. Very easy.
Had problem with "toad" lights. Called etrailer and eventually talked with "Bill" a technicial. Together we decided the problem was probably the "converter" on the RV. Order new converter which was shipped that dat. Received and installed on Monday 11/30/2020 and sure enough PROBLEM SOLVED!

Easy to install if you know how to splice new wires into the existing wiring on your vehicle and have connectors (not included) to do it.
