Hub-Piloted Wheel

This wheel is hub piloted, which means that it centers on the hub, not the lugs. The wheel requires the use of flange nuts (sold separately) for installation.

Corrosion-Resistant Finish

The steel wheel goes through a 3-step finishing process that makes it both attractive and corrosion resistant. The wheel is first submerged in a zinc phosphate bath to ensure good paint adhesion. It is then e-coated with an acrylic primer base and finished on both sides with baked-on DuPont powder paint.

Radial Tires vs. Bias Tires

Radial tire vs bias tire graphic

Radial ply tires are designed for trailers that are towed on the highway. The cords on a radial tire are positioned at a 90-degree angle to the direction of travel so that they lay across the width of the tire from wheel lip to wheel lip. This construction prevents the cords from rubbing against one another when the tire flexes, unlike the cords on a bias ply tire. As a result, radial tires have less rolling resistance and heat buildup, which leads to a longer tread life and improved steering at higher speeds.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

Video Transcript for Review of Taskmaster Trailer Tires and Wheels - Diamondback 21575R17.5 Radial 17-1/2 Wheel - TA57GR

Hi everybody, Andy here with etrailer.com. Let's take a look at this Diamondback 215 75R 17.5 Load Range H Radial Tire with a 17 and a half inch solid center wheel with an eight on six and a half inch bolt pattern. This tire and wheel assembly is ideal for trailers and this assembly features the tire match mounted and balance the wheel for ride comfort and durability. Now the match mounting of tires and wheels is a process in which the tire installation position on the wheel is specifically selected to help minimize the final force of imbalance. The method of match mounting involves aligning the tire's lightest spot with the wheel's heaviest spot to eliminate most of the radial force that can cause tire and suspension wear. Then a final balance is done by applying weights to specific spots on the wheel to eliminate any chance of uneven wear or vibration.

So you see our weights there on either side of this wheel. Now this radial tire is constructed with double steel belts for a long life. As you probably know, radial ply tires are designed for trailers that are towed on the highway and the nylon tread firming belt overlays help prevent tread separation. The tread wear indicator makes it easy to see the tread depth. Now, as I mentioned at the beginning of our time together and as we have stamped on our tire, this is a 215 75R 17.5 tire.

The section width is 8.3 inches, and this is a load range H tire, meaning it has a six ply rating and this has a maximum load of 4,805 pounds at 125 PSI. This has a speed rating of M indicating a maximum speed of 81 miles per hour. Now the heavy duty steel wheel (knocking on metal) with the solid center design is sturdy and corrosion resistant. This actually features a three step finishing process that includes a zinc phosphate bath, an eco primer and then a silver powder coat on both sides of the wheel. And the wheel is hub piloted, which means that it centers on the hub, not the lugs.

So this wheel is going to require the use of flange nuts, which are sold separately, for installation. And the flange nut size is five eighths of an inch by 18. The dimensions of our wheel is 17 and a half inches in diameter and then six and three quarters inches wide. And this does have an offset of negative 0.19 inches. And as I mentioned before, this has a bolt pattern of eight on six and a half inches.

And in case you don't know, the first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. And then the second number is the diameter in inches of the circle on which the bolt holes sit. So to determine the bolt circle diameter on wheels with an even number of bolt holes, as we have here, you're simply going to measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. Now the wheel capacity is 6,005 pounds. The pilot diameter is 4.76 inches and this tire and wheel assembly does meet the Department of Transportation specifications and then the tire exceeds the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard specifications. Well, that's gonna wrap up our look today. I do hope that it was helpful for you. Again, my name is Andy. Thank you for joining me.
