Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite's Tested Tough program provides testing standards far superior to those outlined by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), the go-to source for engineering professionals.

Each Draw-Tite trailer hitch receiver undergoes extensive fatigue testing and static testing with the ball mount that is either supplied or recommended for use with that particular hitch, thus ensuring results that are applicable to real life use. Fatigue testing is also conducted on hitches rated for use with weight-distribution systems.

In addition, Draw-Tite performs static testing on a simulated automobile, as opposed to the rigid fixture used for SAE testing, resulting in a more true-to-life scenario.

Trailer work as advertised the hitch. Anyway, the wiring harness was straightforward and does require some common sense when taking your car apart.

2013 Mazda Miata

The installation instructions are excellent and the quality of the product made everything fit together perfectly.

The only difference on my 2013 Mazda 5 was that there is no heat shield to push out of the way and reinstall...see attached photos.

This hitch carrier works great thought I was not expecting to mount a roof box on it. It's the perfect platform for a Thule Sidekick. We now have locked and dry storage for winter use. This is in addition to our roof box.

This is my 2nd hitch receiver purchase from eTrailer. First one was for my 2007 Honda Odyssey; a HiddenHitch brand. I was debating whether to go with HiddenHitch or the Draw-Tite. But what sold me on the Draw-Tite was that it was rated "tough" -- I'm pretty sure that it is because when I received it, I noticed how well it was built. Either brand would require the factory frame holes to be enlarged somewhat on the 2012 Mazda5.

Dremmel came in handy once again with metal grinder. I drilled a hole next to the factory one and started to shave the metal off. Then I sprayed it with a primer as a rust inhibitor. It actually took longer than 40min-1hour. But that's because I had taken my time as I wanted to install it correctly.

Only thing that I would have improved with the Draw-Tite hitch receiver is the opening for the receiver could have been tapered instead if being straight cut.

Instruction was pretty straightforward and the metal spring/string which was provided came in handy. Along with the hitch receiver, I also purchased the flat cargo carrier for the upcoming trip. Overall, I am very happy with the purchase. eTrailer once again, made what could have been a chore install a breeze.

The hitch fit exactly as stated.
Install
video was a great help.
The customer service representative was excellent in assisting me to modify my order later in the day.
I will always check etrailer first when searching for trailering and bike rack products.

Easy install looks well built

by:

The hitch was shipped fast and is built to last. The instructions were easy to follow and all parts were included.

The only reason I am giving this a 4 is because I feel the term "No drilling required" is disingenuous. The access hole that needed to be expanded was only about 1/4". That hole needs to be widened to about 1 1/4" to allow the bolts and spacer through. I didn't have a bit that large, and expanding that hole was the bane of the install. It added about an hour to the otherwise simple install. I would recommend that the proper size drill bit be included or recommended for purchase at checkout.

2010 Honda Odyssey

Fairly easy install on a Mazda 5... I use a bastard file to enlarge the existing frame holes for the passenger side bolts. This was my fourth Draw-Tite hitch from etrailer to install - previous installs include 2004 Honda Odyssey, 2007 Honda Fit, and 2010 Honda Fit.

2015 Mazda 5

Absolutely great experience putting it on my 2015 Mazda5! It arrived promptly and completely, and it took me about an hour to put it on. I drove the passenger's side up on the curb to give myself more room to install, and switched the car around to install the driver's side bolt. I used a 1 1/8 inch hole saw bit from Home Depot ~$14 for the hole. I'm no mechanic, and almost didn't realize that one needs to completely separate each of the two plastic rivets into two parts before reinstalling the bumper guard ("fascia back"). Other than that, the video instructions were perfect. This is definitely a DYI project that anyone can do. I picked etrailer because of my same great experience putting a different Draw-Tite hitch on my Mazda 5 >10 years ago.

The trailer nitch is still great after a year. More importantly, its sister hitch is still pulling after 11 years.

by:

Very impressed with quality of the product, it was easy to install and is holding up great after a year of use.

by:
2012 Mazda 5

The product seems to be good quality. The installation is a little tricky, though. The instructions aren't hard to read, but make sure and look at ALL the figures and read through it all twice.

I've done a lot of car work (replaced suspension, even swapped an engine). Yet this still took me a little over 2 hours. You'll need a 1" drill bit or a good dremel to enlarge 2 holes. Preferably a die grinder if you don't have the drill bit. Remember the eye protection! And ideally you should paint the exposed metal after drilling.

You also have to bend a heat shield (near the muffler) out of the way to get a bolt in place, and it is still tricky. After everything is tight you can bend the heat shield back but it doesn't go exactly to the original position. It should be fine, though.

Last note: I have a curt tongue (from my previous hitch install) and it is short enough and the receiver recessed enough that you can install it in the "upward" (recommended) position. However, I do like how discreet this receiver will be when not in use.

So, it seems like it is quality made, but I think the estimate for instillation is too low. So, 4 out of 5.

I installed this hitch in less then an hour without a single problem. There are several youtube videos posted by people who have installed this hitch and they are well worth watching. This was extremely easy to install, to order, was in stock, shipped quickly and I received it in just a few days. I would highly recommend etrailer and this hitch to anyone in need of a hitch. Mine was ordered for a 2014 Mazda 5, but I'm confident that etrailer's service and hitches will exceed anyone expectations.

It has always worked great. I have a home in Dayton Beach and one at Lake Wedowee Alabama. I make quite a few trips back and fourth and I always take a large trailer full of tools and furniture and Ive never had a problem.

by:

This was a moderately difficult to install for someone that occasionally works on their own car. I have a workbench and tools and a healthy sense of what is outside of my abilities. This wasn't too bad. The videos were very helpful guiding me through it. Once the hitch was in place it is very secure. It makes the rear end a little low so you have to watch out for steep driveways.

by:

Fit perfectly in my 2014 Mazda5. Nice look from behind. I use this for my bike rack.
For installation. It’s not bad but you should have an extra hand to help

by:

Hitch cam with clear instructions for easy install in about an hour. The hitch has no problem carrying a loaded bike rack, witch is all we need it for.

This hitch has worked perfectly on our 2012 Mazda 5. We're very pleased with it. Very sturdy. etrailer also recommended a rack that is compatible with it (Thule Roadway 2 part # TH912XTR) which has also worked perfectly.

The only notable difficulty I had with this hitch was with the installation While the instructions and video are straightforward, it was actually a BEAR to drill out the hole for the carriage bolt to fit through.

But I only own a 3/8 inch drill, which is not large enough to accommodate the right size hole saw. Trying to widen it with a smaller hole saw was impossibly time and muscle consuming, at least for me, lying under the car in my garage. Ultimately I had to call a friend who owned a larger drill, and he came and drilled it out for me. But it was certainly not the 45 minute project I hoped it would be.

If you own a drill that is large enough to work with an inch and a quarter hole saw, and have enough physical space to put muscle behind it to drill into it, it'd probably be easy peasy.

Purchased a trailer hitch for a 2014 Mazda5. Arrived quickly, so I installed it that weekend. It came with all the hardware and special cable to fish the hardware through the frame channels. Everything was well thought out and dud not take long. I saved a lot of money for a custom product. I also bought a wiring harness that was also incredibly easy to install with no splicing, all custom oem connectors. Thank you etrailer.com

2012 Mazda 5

Easy install, didn't even have to lift the car. The hardest part was making the access hole, I didn't have a stepped drill bit so I just used a Dremel with a reenforced cutting disc and cut out a 1" square. Easy peasy lemon breezy.

Installed on my Mazda 5. Installation was straightforward (but you are going to need to drill a hole and installation is much easier with 2 people than with one). Has been rock-solid since installation. Primarily use it with a hitch bike rack.

I purchased a trailer hitch on line and received a call from Anna in Customer Service telling me that the hitch I ordered was not in stock and had a long lead time. Normally, this would be okay but this was to be a birthday present for my wife, so, Anna helped me select a comparable hitch that was in stock. After I received the hitch Anna contacted me again to ensure I was happy with my purchase. Not only was I happy but my wife is ecstatic. The bonus was they have better pricing for the same hitch than their competitors. Great customer care, great pricing, great hitches - what's not to like? I highly recommend etrailer.com.

  • Trailer Hitch Mount Bike Rack Recommendation for a 2012 Mazda 5 and Class I Trailer Hitch
The Draw-Tite trailer hitch # 24874 is a Class I trailer hitch with a 1-1/4 inch receiver. Because it is a Class I hitch, you are limited to certain bike racks and a maximum of 2 bikes because a Class I trailer hitch cannot support the added stress of additional bikes. With that said there are still a number of bike rack options that are compatible. I have included a link to all of the Class I compatible bike racks for you to view. As an alternate, a 1 inch diameter hole can be drilled in the bottom of the frame member as shown in the diagram I provided. No drilling or enlarging will be required on the drivers side.
