On 06/14/2012 I posted my comment about the wonderful product I purchased from www.etrailer.com. I stated I would add pictures later… It is now later.
My pictures will show how I had to move things before I purchased my Hitch from www.etrailer.com and modified a store bought trailer.
The third picture shows the trailer attached to my www.etrailer.com hitch after the assembly of the trailer…
The forth picture shows the trailer attached to my www.etrailer.com hitch after doing the trailer wiring and checked out the lights… (All went well)
The fifth picture shows my www.etrailer.com hitch and trailed now at home in Florida… 1,100 miles from Delaware to my home in Florida…. 18 ½ hours on the road… (All went well)
I love how easy my www.etrailer.com hitch and wiring went together… Thank you again www.etrailer.com

*Thread tap M12 1.25* was tough to find in my area. But got the job done!
Fast shipping. Solid packaging. Solid build quality, and it fit perfectly! Using to haul a 5x8 lightweight utility with a couple small push mowers and tools.

by:

Fit perfect! I used a metric tap to clean threads. Without it install would have been much more difficult! I payed $10 for the tap.Maybe you could include it with the hitch and charge a little more.

2005 Toyota Matrix

So far so good. Bought this hitch for a 2005 Toyota Matrix. After I tapped the frame bolt holes out, tons of road grime, this hitch mounted right up. Uaing it for a hitch mounted 2 bike carrier and it's done great so far. Just drove 800 miles with the bikes on the back and no problems.

by:
2010 Toyota Matrix

Fits perfectly on our 2005 Toyota Matrix (base model) - only problem was getting the weld nuts cleaned out, but after 10 years of Midwestern winters I'm not surprised that they were extremely crud-filled. I used a wire brush from a shotgun cleaning kit and lots of WD-40 to clean them out.

by:
2008 Toyota Matrix

Excellent! Installed entire kit in under an hour. Hardest part was the bolt holes on the undercarriage. They were rusty and needed to be retapped. The electrical was a breeze. Great product. Hitch blends in well with car, 5 stars!

by:

The mounting holes did not line up with tapped holes in car frame. I had to hand file the hitch holes nearly 1/4” to mount the hitch. Also the hitch made contact with my exhaust pipe causing rumbling noise. I have removed the hitch pending a fix for that.

It sounds like the side brackets of the hitch were flexed which is why the bolt holes did not line up. Most of the time the side brackets can be flexed back into alignment and still be installed. I also do have a good FAQ to help with eliminating the hitch rattle that you are experiencing.

by:

After sitting on the living room floor for 4 days, I finally found time to hook up it up. It was straightforward, a breeze to install. Makes my car look a bit manly now lol. I will use it to tow a dirtbike, mountain bikes and a wheelchair.

by:
2009 Toyota Matrix

Arrived very quickly. Installation was a breeze. Took advice from video and cleaned bolt threads first. 4 bolts later and it was installed. No difficulties at all and no trimming of plastic. Very pleased.

by:

Hitch fits my vehicle perfectly. Had mounting holes cleaned and prepared before hitch was delivered making installation simple. Price was fair, shipping was quick.

2003 Toyota Matrix

Received hitch earlier than expected & all looked new & undamaged, however the bolts attaching the hitch did not fit. I cleaned the existing nuts in the frame with WD40, a tooth brush & Qtips but the bolt gets very tight quickly & feels like the threading is wrong & tightening feels that it is damaging the nut. So I called & gave them all the information on the bolts they sent & told them the problem I was experiencing. They elected to send me a new set of bolts which are the same as the originals so I haven't been able to install the hitch. At first it looked like this was going to be an easy job but because of the bolts nothing has been accomplished. I'm not sure what to do! Buy a tap to tap nuts to fit bolts or try to find & buy the right size bolts for the existing frame nuts. What do you suggest???

Due to the age of your vehicle, and the fact that you live in an area that experiences winter weather, the nuts that are welded into the frame members that are used to mount the hitch are very likely corroded which is preventing you from fully threading in the installation hardware. In many cases, a good shot of spray lubricant like WD-40 or PB Blaster and some scrubbing with a wire brush from a battery terminal cleaner # DW00254 will clean the threads well enough that the bolts can be threaded into place. In some cases, when the corrosion is severe, a M12 x 1.25 thread tap is needed.

It went on easily enough and has stayed on. I’ve used it for trailers and other hitch attachments with no issues.

The hitch outlasted my car. I never had any issues with it and it performed the way it should.

by:

Easy to install. Only problem is lack of enough clearance from muffler. Any little bump you go over on the road or worse if you are on a dirt road, the muffler makes quite a racket rattling on the hitch.

Thank you for your review. This is actually an easy fix. You would just need to bend your hanger bracket to get the exhaust further away from the hitch.

by:

Installation time is much longer than advertised. Expect to invest in a M12x1.25 tap to ream out the threads in the frame bolts. (These are hard to find and I suggest etrailer stock these.) The nylon tube brush suggested by etrailer to clean the threads in the video may work in a newer vehicle but not in my 2012 Toyota Matrix S and a tap was necessary. There was also an issue with the muffler hitting the hitch frame. I solved that grinding the channel back where it hit the muffler (which was in a non-structural area). Bending the muffler hanger back to move the muffler back as suggested in the comment section didn't seem like a good permanent solution to me. Otherwise I thing the hitch is a great product. Installation wasn't as easy as advertised.

by:

Package arrived in a surprisingly short time and was a perfect fit. Impressed with the quality.

Hitch installed as easy as could be possible:
Hold
in position, install 4 bolts

It does hang down below the bumper more than I expected, though.

2004 Pontiac Vibe

Fairly easy installation... It was a bit of a challenge to get enough leverage on the wrench to reach the beefy torque requirement, but got it done. I've used the hitch a bunch of times to transport bikes, and it's been perfect for the job. This is installed on a 2004 Pontiac Vibe GT.

Received my hitch with no delay, products that I had bought were as stated.. I found out about you guys from watching youtube, even how to install my hitch and how to wire my car for it. All of you show great concern about product, from taking orders and asking about its install. Well, safe to say I got my hitch shipped to me in no time. I installed my hitch and wiring of it. Install of both went well. Thanks to everyone involved with my purchase and to the ones that put the vidios on youtube.

E-Trailer sets the standard for ecommerce! I have ordered several items from this company and I cannot commend them enough on their product description, instruction videos and item packaging. The best in the industry. The item I ordered is exactly as described and very well built. This hitch is going on my daughters car so I spent many hours researching and reading reviews. I always have my daughter assist me when I work on her car, I want to learn how things work. My wife couldn't believe how quickly this went on and my daughter was very happy with the hitch and the bike rack we installed. With E-Trailer I have no concerns.

  • Is Trimming of the Vehicle Required When Installing a Trailer Hitch on a 2008 Toyota Matrix
The only trimming or modification required is if your 2008 Toyota Matrix is an XR or XRS model. The installation instructions for Curt Trailer Hitch, # 12221, linked below, state that if you do have an XR or XRS model, the lower valance MAY require trimming. All of the available trailer hitches have similar disclaimers; that trimming MAY be required. If you plan on doing some towing, the trailer hitch comes with the required ball mount. You can use hitch ball # 19256 (1-7/8 inch diameter)...

  • Trailer Hitch and Wiring for a 2005 Toyota Matrix
Curt trailer hitch # C12221 would be a good option as long as your 2005 Toyota Matrix is not an XR or XRS model. If it is an XR or XRS model then # C12013 would be the best option for a Curt hitch. These are both Class II hitches which means you have to use the ball mount recommended by the hitch manufacture so as not to void the hitch warranty. This will limit the amount of rise you can get to be able to tow the trailer level. Based on the picture you have sent you will need a good amount...

  • 2-Bike Carrier Recommendation for 2010 Toyota Matrix
You have two general options for bike racks for use on your 2010 Matrix: a hitch mount rack (that requires a hitch be installed on the vehicle) and a trunk-mount type. The trunk mount route will be more cost-effective, but the hitch-mount option gives you the ability to use both a hitch-mount bike rack and other hitch-mount accessories such as a cargo carrier. A hitch also means that the weight load of the bike rack and bikes will be carried by the strongest part of the car - its frame...

Yes, you are correct the differences are that on # C12221 the heat shield modification may be required, and lower fascia may need to be trimmed for hitch installation. On the # C12013 a heat shield modification may be required. It does not need a fascia modification, which presents an easier install on the 2007 Toyota Matrix. Also the # C12013 fits the 2003 - 2008 Toyota Matrix XR and XRS. The # C12221 fits Canadian models of the Matrix FROM 2009 - 2013 (Toyota Matrix,) and 2003 -...

  • Is Heat Shield Modifcation Required to Install Curt Trailer Hitch # 12221 on a 2008 Pontiac Vibe
The Curt hitch # 12221 is only a fit for the 2008 Pontiac Vibe GT models. Heat shield modification is only required for installation if the heat shield interferes with the hitch installation area. If you do not have a GT model, then heat shield modification would not be required. I would recommend the Draw-Tite model # 24812, as this hitch does not require heat shield modification, and it includes a pin and clip, which would be required if you plan to tow a trailer. That does not mean you can't tow with the 1.8L engine, but we have to recommend sticking with what the owner's manual says, so the decision to tow would be up to you.
