Can a 2009 Pontiac Vibe Safely Tow a 1,500 Pound Boat Trailer

Question:

Hi I am looking at buy a 2009 Pontiac Vibe. It has a 1.8L engine and says it can tow 1,500lbs. I have a 15ft fishing boat that weights 1,500lbs. I would feel safe towing on flat ground but not sure about going up the boat ramp. I was wondering if you could give me your expert opinion? Do you think thats ok if I buy the right trailer hitch and get a tranny cooler? I probably use my boat 12 times a year. Most of the time I got out the ramp isnt very steep except when I go to Belle River the ramp is newer and concrete but is pretty steep. Do you think the Vibe can do it and not hurt the car? Thanks for your advice and time!!!

Since you would be right at capacity I do recommend taking any measures feasible in lightening the load. That will make it that much easier on the vehicle. I do believe that properly equipped, the 2009 Pontiac Vibe will be fine towing the 1,500 pounds. Since you will not constantly be towing it up a steep ramp, and that aspect is only a small part of the journey, the Vibe should be just fine.

For a trailer hitch, you can use # C12221 but it is for GT models. If you have a GT model then this is the only hitch option. If it is NOT a GT model then I recommend hitch # C12228. Both hitches are Class II rated and have enough capacity (2500 pounds) for your boat. Even though the hitches are rated at 2500 pounds you will still need to go by the vehicles 1500 pound capacity. I have included links to the instructions for both hitches.

Since you will be towing the correct ball mount is # C45521 for either hitch and you can use pin and clip # PC2. For a 1-7/8 inch ball use # 19256 and for a 2 inch use # 19258. For trailer wiring use # 118460. I have included some installation links on the wiring as well.

It is a good idea to add a transmission cooler. Transmission coolers are not vehicle specific so you can use any one you wish that fits in the available space in the engine compartment. On smaller cars, there is often not a lot of space so the most popular cooler we have, # D13503, might fit. It is 11 inches across, 8-3/4 inches tall, and 7/8 inches deep. I have included a link to an FAQ on transmission coolers that shows the best places to put them so you can determine if you have space.
