If you tow a boat trailer, live in a coastal area, or experience a lot of snow, slush, and salt on the roads, you know how corrosive salt and water can be. Because disc brakes last longer than drum brakes, you should consider how things like rust might impact your trailer over time.


The Dacromet coating on these brakes offers great corrosion protection, even with frequent use in freshwater and saltwater. It can withstand 300 to 400 hours of continual exposure to salt spray before corrosion begins, which is comparable to galvanized steel. So - unless you're driving your trailer through water for 2 weeks straight with no chance for the brakes to dry - it'll be a while before any rust starts to form.

Save Time and Money

More and more people are switching their trailers over to disc brakes. Not only do disc brakes provide more controlled braking than drum brakes, but they also save you money by having fewer parts to maintain.

Unlike drum brakes, which have springs, magnets, and shoes that may need to be continually adjusted or replaced, disc brakes are virtually maintenance-free. There are no springs, cables, or other little components that you'll need to worry about failing.

The brake pads will naturally wear down, so eventually you'll have to replace them. But these pads are also way easier to replace than drum brake shoes. The caliper - where the pads are housed - is located on the outside of the brake assembly. This means you just have to remove that one part to replace the brake pads rather than having to remove the entire assembly like you would with drum brakes.

This particular kit can save you time and money over other disc brakes on the market as well. A slip-on rotor may be easier to install initially, but water can find its way between the rotor and your existing hub, causing uneven rotor wear or runout. With a 1-piece hub-and-rotor assembly, water and debris can't get in to cause any corrosion or contamination.


In addition, vented rotors, like these, disperse heat faster than non-vented rotors. When brakes retain heat, they are more likely to experience brake fade, or loss of braking power. So even if you take your boat or camper out every weekend, these trailer brakes will continue to offer excellent performance throughout their long life.

Kodiak disc brakes have a unique caliper mounting bracket as well. The side-support design puts all of the weight on the mounting bracket instead of on the bolts. This reduces premature wear and extends the life of the bolts, further ensuring optimal performance.


Determining the Bolt Pattern

If you want to remount your existing wheels after installing these brakes, you'll need a kit that offers the same bolt pattern. To determine the bolt pattern, count the number of bolt holes (or lug nuts) on your trailer's wheel. This will give you the first number in the pattern. To find the second number, just measure the distance between a bolt hole and the bolt hole across from it.

For example on wheels with an even number of bolt holes: 6 on 5-1/2" means 6 bolt holes with 5-1/2" from the center of 1 hole to the center of the hole across from it.

And with an odd number of bolt holes: 5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" from the center of 1 hole to the farthest edge of one of the 2 farthest bolt holes.

Hi there, I'm Michael with etrailer.com. Today we're gonna take a quick look at this Kodiak 13 inch hub and rotor disc brake assembly set. This set is going to allow you to upgrade your trailer from drum brakes to disc brakes so that you can take advantage of the superior performance that comes along with having disc brakes on your trailer. Having the two brake assemblies here is going to allow you to upgrade a single 8,000 pound capacity Alko or Quality type axle with the number 42 spindles. Our rotors are 13 inches in diameter, and as you can see, we have the eight on 6 1/2 inch bolt pattern with these 5/8 inch diameter wheel bolts. So these are gonna work for your wheels that are 16 inches and larger.

Our hub and rotors, as well as our calipers and our caliper mounting brackets all have a dichromate plating. So they are gonna resist rust and corrosion really well. They've got a 300 to 400 hour salt spray rating so these are gonna be great for your boat trailers or trailers that are used in coastal areas where you get a lot of salt. You're gonna have to go through those kind of corrosive environments. These are gonna hold up really well for you.

So an advantage of having the disc brakes on your trailer. These are going to provide a dramatically shorter stopping distance. We've got ceramic brake pads here so that helps to increase your stopping power. There's also a large 2 1/2 inch diameter stainless steel piston that provides a nice fast responsive braking for you. So it's gonna be a lot smoother, more controlled than your drum brakes which oftentimes can leave your trailer pushing and pulling as you're going down the road.

So these are gonna give you great performance. They're also gonna require less maintenance than your drum brakes. So unlike your drum brakes that have the small springs and other components, this does have the one piece hub and rotor assembly, so that's gonna reduce the chance of uneven rotor wear. On the side here, we do have the vented design that's gonna help dissipate your heat, so it's going to reduce the chance of premature brake pad wear. So again, your brake pads will wear down over time, gradually, so you'll need to replace those, but that's really the only thing that you will need to replace.

The rest of this is gonna hold up really well. It's a high quality automotive grade construction so it is gonna be very long lasting. Replacing the brake pads is pretty straightforward, pretty simple to do, and so, again, unlike your drum brakes that have all those small components that can fail on you, have to be replaced, these are gonna be very low maintenance, so it is gonna help save you time and money. One caveat I do want to point out, disc brakes do require a higher line pressure than your drum brakes so you're gonna need to make sure that you've got a hydraulic brake actuator and brake lines that are rated for 1500 psi or higher in order to activate your brakes. So if your trailer is currently set up for drum brakes it's unlikely that your brake lines and actuator are rated for that high amount of pressure. So it might take some doing to get everything converted over. If you don't already have those components we have them available here at etrailer.com. Obviously they're not included with this. This case is going to give you quite a bit of the components that you're gonna need but it's not going to give you those brake lines or the actuator itself. So you are going to get two of the dichromate plated cast iron hub and rotor assemblies with the eight pre-installed 5/8 inch diameter wheel bolts on each. We also get 16 of these 5/8 inch zinc plated steel lug nuts to hold your wheel in place. We've got our two dichromate plated cast iron calipers as well as our dichromate plated ductile iron caliber mounting brackets. You can see we do have the four bolt brake flange configuration here, so it is gonna be very simple to get these mounted on your axle. We also have two of these stainless steel caliper mounting bolts on each one. A little bit harder to see. We do have an inner and an outer race that are pre-installed and those will give you the housing for your bearings. You also have our inner and outer bearings included here to make sure that everything is rotating smoothly. This system is lubricated with oil so you are going to get your two oil seals for the inside, the two oil caps here for the outside, as well as one 8 ounce bottle of synthetic bearing oil. I have to make sure that everything stays lubricated. So, overall, like I said, it is going to take a little bit of doing to get upgraded to accommodate your disc brakes but these are gonna provide such a great improvement in performance and the quality of the dichromate finish.
