Why Fold-Down Steps are Right for You

If you've ever stepped into a camper that has standard metal steps, you've probably felt that scary springboard effect that makes you reach for the handle. That bounce occurs because those pull-out steps never touch the ground. Fold-down steps have adjustable legs that steady the steps on the ground, so you can feel safe using them. Also, fold-down steps store behind your camper door, which means they aren't left out in the elements to rust or warp like factory steps.

MORryde StepAbove vs. Lippert SolidStep

But what makes these MORryde steps different from other fold-down steps, like the Lippert SolidSteps? The StepAbove has a couple advantages over the SolidStep.

First, the MORryde steps can be detached when you need park your camper in tight spots. If you have to park close to another vehicle in a storage lot, for example, there might not be enough clearance to deploy your steps. With SolidStep, this means that you can't deploy the steps and now they are blocking your entryway. MORryde steps can be easily detached by sliding the pins out of the floor hinges, which allows you to lift the steps out of the doorway so you can slip inside if needed.

Second, unlike the SolidSteps which have a solid backplate on the top step, the StepAbove has no backplates blocking the gaps between each step. This makes it easy to sweep the steps free of dirt and debris before folding them up in your doorway, so you aren't stuck cleaning up your entry after every hike or trip.

Will MORryde StepAbove Entry Steps Work for You?

Fold-down steps are typically installed on travel trailers and 5th wheels. The fold-down steps from MORryde install inside your camper's door frame and lift up to latch into the doorway for storage. To ensure that you choose the correct size for your application, follow these 3 easy steps:

Step 1: Measure the Entry Height

Measuring your RV entry height

Measure from the doorway threshold on your camper to the ground. For these steps to work, you will need an entry height between 25" and 29".

If you find that you have a larger entry height, there are other step assemblies that fit entry heights ranging from 25" to 42". (See table below.)

Step 2: Measure the Doorway Width

Measuring your RV doorway width

Measure from the inside of your door flange to the inside of the door flange on the opposite side. Your doorway will need to be between 21-3/4" wide and 22-1/4" wide for these steps to work.

If it turns out that you have a wider or narrower doorway, there are other step assemblies that fit doorways ranging from 21-3/4" wide to 30-1/2" wide. (See table below.)

Step 3: Measure the Threshold

Measuring your RV threshold height

Measure the rise of your threshold. The distance between the floor and top of the threshold must be between 5/8" and 3/4". If the height of your threshold is outside of this range, the doors may not close properly.

Measuring your RV threshold gap

To allow room for the hinge plate, there must be a gap of at least 3/8" between the threshold and the bottom of the entry and screen doors. If the gap is too narrow, the doors may not close while the steps are down.

Find the Step that Works for You

If, after taking your camper's measurements, you find that these steps will not work for you, use the table below to determine which part number you need.

These steps are 1,000 times better than the standard steps installed on our camper. I followed the how to install video from etrailer and had them installed in less than 10 minutes. Great investment and upgrade for our camper

by:

The installation was very easy and the stairs work great
I added a 3.5 lift kit at the same time
The only minor problem is the door hit the fender so when putting the stairs in the stored position you have to pull them to side to get past the door not a big problem

by:

Installed it on our RPod 176T. Great upgrade! The factory installed one always rocked the entire trailer when going in and out, this one eliminates that. Installed it in about 15 minutes.

by:

These steps are packaged well. The steps are sturdy, far superior to the standard ones. I had to grind a lip off of the threshold and bend the flange flat to accommodate the gap under the door. Also it would be wise to mention in the instructions that the door has to be all the way open when folding down or up to prevent the brackets from hitting the screen door.

by:

This took 5 minutes to install. Such a great solution instead of the single slide in step my RV came with. Highly recommend. 2020 NoBo 16.2

by:

Step arrived was as advertised, easy to install, and made entering and exiting the camper more secure and safe to enter and exit, great product.

by:

Exactly what we were looking for. Easy access into the rv for my husband. Very pleased.

by:

I think your products are of good quality and easy to install or use . What I have a problem with is the shippers destroying the packages and loosing products from inside the boxes and damaging what's inside. I think etrailer should look into this and make the shippers pay for what they have done.

by:

Perfect fit, fast delivery, and super easy installation.

by:

Fit perfect and took about 20 minutes to install. Such an upgrade from stock that my trailer is actually nicer now. Love it

by:

I had to make modifications to my trailer to install mine to make it possible to close my doors over the threshold. That included cutting out a portion of my flooring and filing off the bottom of my screen door. Barely clearance. We chose also to add extra strength by fully bolting the stairs through our floor instead of just screwing them in. OK WITH ALL THAT DONE, THE STAIRS ARE AMAZING IN EVERY WAY. They just seems like they are proprietary to certain trailers, I don't know what ones.

by:

We have a Joyco Jayflight with a small door, with some slight modifications we got it to fit. Works great and makes it a lot easer to get in and out of our unit. For this unit, it should be 1/2" smaller in width. We trimed 3/8" from top by grinding down the mounting bracket..

There awesome. Easy install and use.

by:

Love these steps! They adjust to various levels, are strong and easily fold down.

by:

Great product. Easy to install. Only took 30 minutes to install. No more wobbly steps!

by:

Thank you, Jaime. and etrailer too.

by:

This is a great product and an easy install. This two step model is easily lifted in to the closed position, and improved leg adjustment eliminated to older style pin. Unfortunately, the directions from MORryde are incorrect for the current product they shipped me. The hinge did not have the cut out corner, giving access to the outermost screw when it is in the correct position. I highly recommend this product.

by:

This provides a more stable step into our RV for us seniors. Relatively easy installation for Do it yourselfer.

by:

waited a long time to order these stairs are fine but came bent and stair levelers don’t slide out automatically or easily

by:

These steps are so much safer and easier to use then the standard pull out step. Installation took less than 5 minutes.

by:

Definitely worth the money. Fits my RV perfect

Perfect. Verry good

by:

it took me about 30 minutes to install these steps, I only wish I had done it three years ago. very easy to install and adjust and I think the quick release hinge pins are a very smart add.

by:

Solid feel, easy to install.

by:

Great Item,Super Fast Shipping,Five Sta rs

by:

The steps were out of square and not right. The floor was level but the stairs had a terrible lean to the left.

Very well made

  • Does MORryde StepAbove 2-Step Have Option With Backplates
So there is not an option for a backplate/backsplash with the MORryde StepAbove RV Steps for 21-3/4" to 22-1/4" Wide Doorways - 2 Steps # MR86RR. This was a design choice, however, much like the removable pins; the reason for that is to make it simpler to clean the steps. With steps that have the backplates, cleaning them and sweeping off the dirt that inevitably gets on them is a pain because you can't just sweep it off the back of the step, so dirt tends to linger. That isn't the case...

I recommend using the MORryde StepAbove RV Steps for 21-3/4" to 22-1/4" Wide Doorways - 2 Steps # MR86RR, which I was able to confirm with my contact at MORryde will work on your door with 22-1/2" between the flanges. The bracket should have enough play to close the 1/4" gap according to them, but he mentioned if you've still got a little slack you can use something as a shim/spacer to reduce movement. This is a 2 step option that is ideal for entry heights between 25"-29".
