Protect your investment

If you aren't using a surge protector, you're taking a big risk. While spikes caused by lightning can damage your electrical system and appliances, there are common electrical issues that can be just as dangerous. Choosing a surge protector with advanced features will help you protect your RV.

Voltage Boosting

Electrical problems are not uncommon at campgrounds, especially ones where wiring was originally installed decades ago. When a campground is full on a hot day and everyone is running their air conditioners, low voltage may cause a brown-out situation and damage your RV appliances.

Hughes Autoformers Voltage Boosters respond by automatically boosting voltage when low levels are detected. As voltage drops, electrical circuits respond by increasing amps. The booster converts the increased amps into volts to keep your connection strong. If volts drop below a usable threshold, it automatically cuts off power.

Does exactly what it says it does. I have a seasonal site for my trailer and noticed when the park was full my ac didn't keep up, coffee pot was slow etc. Checked the voltage and was only getting 109 at times. This thing solved it.

by:

It works great. Now we can use our AC. HoweverI wish it had Bluetooth to my iPhone like the watchdog.

by:

time will tell if it stays the course. Works as described and easy hookup. Will have to see when the spare surge unit comes and how it lasts.
It's hard to believe after 45 years of rving finally someone explains why I kept smoking the cord and extension cord ends. And endangering my air conditioner and all the electronics.

by:

Works great. Installed this after power issues at a campground. Very easy install, mounted inside camper.

by:

I haven’t had a chance to use the product yet therefore I can’t comment on it. But etrailer customer service was great and the sale price was the best I see anywhere. I received the product promptly and well packed for shipping.

by:

Looks great we will see how it works this weekend

by:

Have used it for one year with no problems and no regrets! Takes care of low power, surge protection, lights to indicate if there is a problem with power pedestal at the park before I connect our RV.

by:

The product is fine however I would like to mention Kristina* over at etrailer, had an issue and not even 10 minutes later she got on the horn and another call came in letting me know it was fixed. It’s hard to get anyone to do their job at all. Girl needs a raise!

by:

This booster is great now we can run the heater in the microwave at the same time before we had to shut the heaters off to run the microwave with everything else that is being used

by:

I have just receive our unit so I can't really review but will write a review once we have set it up and use it.

by:

Great Product!!

Has saved me at least 3 times this past year with low voltage and high resistance circuits at multiple parks, let’s me know if there is a problem as soon as plugged in, especially with open grounds

by:

Unit works as describe. Glad to have this to protect the RV electrical system.

by:

It works as expected. A couple of issues make it a less-than-perfect product.
1. The location and orientation of the outlet makes it easy for the cord to work loose. Admittedly a 50-amp cord is heavy but it needs a more positive connection.
2. Mine failed under warranty. They don't send a replacement but repair the one you send back. Problem is that it is heavy. As a full-time RVer, I don't keep old packaging "just in case" so returning it was a challenge.

by:

An electrician friend and fellow RVer recommended this after we'd experienced a low voltage situation. The power supply line to our electrical feed had a fault that caused the low voltage. I have been very happy with this product. It gives me confidence every time I connect to power. I don't want to replace appliances or HVAC units due to shortened life as a result of power supply voltage issues.

by:

This park...in the hottest history cut down all my shade and gives me 104 volts. The hughes box works fantastic! Arrived fast in perfect shape. Thankyou ... I have a.c. again and in Palm Springs....old 67 year old....is saving my life.

Products arrived quickly. Will be using for the first time this coming weekend

  • Will Hughes Autoformers Voltage Booster and Watch Dog Work on a House with Generator
The Hughes Autoformers Voltage Booster with Surge Protection part # HU24FR and Power Watchdog Surge Protector with Bluetooth and Emergency Shut Down part # HU77FR are designed for trailers but so long as you don't try to pull more than 30 amp through them it would not be an issue to use them on a home with generator. The booster is basically a step up transformer, that will boost voltage 2% all the time, and if/when your voltage is low 113V or lower, it will go to a 10% boost. The watchdog...

  • What Amperage Hughes Autoformer Surge Protector Is Correct For My RV
No, you will always want to get the Hughes Autoformer Surge Protector that matches the amperage of your RV. The shore power amperage isn't what you'll need to go off when selecting your surge protector. You'll hook your RV up to the # HU24FR and then connect it to the shore power. If you are at a campsite with a different amperage than you trailer then you would use an adapter in between the surge protector and the shore power pedestal. If you had a 50 amp service trailer you would...

  • Is the Hughes Autoformers Voltage Booster with Surge Protection Compatible with a Generator
No, the Hughes Autoformers Voltage Booster with Surge Protection # HU24FR will not work with your inverter generator. It is designed to be used with a pedestal at an RV park, not a generator. We do not have a voltage booster that will work with a generator. But if you are wanting a surge protector that works with a generator you can use the Power Watchdog Surge Protector # HU27FR. One thing you will want to note is that some generators have a ‘floating neutral’. This could cause the Power...

  • Can You Use A 30 Amp Voltage Booster On A 50 Amp Service Trailer
No, you should always purchase a voltage booster that matches the amperage of the trailer. A voltage booster doesn't increase the voltage like the name would imply. It's simply there to ensure the current stays steady to ensure the safety of your trailer's electrical components and will cut the power if it drops or rises above a safe level. You'll never get 50 amp service out of a 30 amp pedestal using a voltage booster. Not having 50 amp service is simply going to limit the amount of...

  • Where Is The Hughs Auto Former # HU24FR Installed At
The Hughes Autoformers Voltage Booster with Surge Protection # HU24FR does not have Bluetooth like the Power Watchdog units do. At the same time, they are considered to be 'automatic'. They always boost voltage by 2% and IF the voltage drops to 113V or so, then that is when the unit kicks on the boost and it should boost the voltage 10%, and the boost light(S) be illuminated. They cannot shut off power, so it is either you have power from the pedestal/source or you don't. The autoformer...

  • Does Hughes Autoformers Need Additional Surge Protector to Keep From Replacing the Entire Unit
Great question, Dirk! Both the 30A # HU24FR and the 50A # HU57FR Hughes Autoformers have built in surge protectors so you won't need to have a separate surge protector installed. If the Autoformers does have to deal with a surge situation we have a replacement piece so you can get the surge protection back without having to replace the entire unit: - 30A # HU86FR - 50A # HU26FR Attached is a video showing how to replace the surge protector for your reference.

  • Boosting Voltage with Hughes Autoformers Voltage Booster with Surge Protection
The purpose of the Hughes Autoformers Voltage Booster with Surge Protection - 30 Amp, # HU24FR is not to continually boost 15 amp service to 30. For 30 amp service at your house you simply need to run a 30 amp line with a properly matched receptacle. The Hughes Autoformers, # HU24FR is designed to address voltage drops during periods of heavy draw from the supply, i.e. you are connected to a pedestal supply at a state park or private campground and so are a lot of others and everyone has...

  • Are Campers Supposed To Use 120Volt or 240Volt Connections?
Campers with either 30-amp or 50-amp connections are all going to be 120 volt. The connectors they use can be wired for either 120 volt power or 240 volt power which is why you see several people damage their campers as they try and plug into an outlet in their home that was designed for either a dryer or welder that uses 240 volt power. It gets really confusing with 50-amp campers as they use 2 separate hot plugs with 120 volt power and then they combine the neutral wires which is why...

  • Weather Rating For Hughes Auto Former Voltage Booster
The Hughes Autoformers Voltage Booster with Surge Protection - 30 Amp # HU24FR has a NEMA rated plug at TT-30P. The enclosure box is weather resistant but not water-proof, it can not be submerged in liquid or left out in heavy rain or water will penetrate the enclosure. When speaking with Hughes Autoformers they informed me that the enclosure is not NEMA rated yet. So I recommend getting the Hughes Autoformers Rain Cover for 30-Amp Voltage Boosters # HU78FR, just to be safe.
