Can You Use A 30 Amp Voltage Booster On A 50 Amp Service Trailer

Question:

I was told to buy a 30 amp voltage booster Hughes for my 50 amp trailer because the park power is 30 amp. I have done that. Can I use it?

No, you should always purchase a voltage booster that matches the amperage of the trailer. A voltage booster doesn't increase the voltage like the name would imply. It's simply there to ensure the current stays steady to ensure the safety of your trailer's electrical components and will cut the power if it drops or rises above a safe level.

You'll never get 50 amp service out of a 30 amp pedestal using a voltage booster. Not having 50 amp service is simply going to limit the amount of things you can run in your trailer.

I recommend returning the Hughes Autoformers Voltage Booster with Surge Protection - 30 Amp # HU24FR you purchased and get the 50 amp # HU57FR instead.

If you're in a campsite with only 30 amp service you would connect your RV power cord to the booster and then use an adapter # A10-3050FHVP between the booster and pedestal to convert down to 30 amp service.
