GasStop ACME vs POL Graphic

Notes:

  • This valve is only meant to be used on travel trailers and fifth wheels that have the ACME connection fitting. Please see the graphic above to double check what type of valve you need.
  • Adapter fitting (sold separately) may be required to connect your hose to your propane system's regulator.

You're headed to the next campsite, and in the chaos of packing up, you forgot to turn off your propane system. While on the road, someone rear ends you, causing a propane line to come loose, and you now run the risk of a fire breaking out on your RV. It's a dreaded situation that no one wants to suffer through.

Unlike EFVs and other built-in limiters that just reduce the flow of gas, GasStop shut-off safety valve immediately and completely shuts off your gas supply when it detects either a major leak in your propane system or major failure of your regulator. This protects both your family and your travel trailer or fifth wheel, ensuring that your camping trip remains safe, fun, and worry-free. And while this safety valve will shut off for major leaks such as a large break in the hose, it won't shut off for small leaks that result from your regulator's small housing failure or clogged chambers. This means that your furnace or heater won't go out in the middle of the night while camping in the frigid mountains over a small, less dangerous leak.

GasGear Stainless Steel Hose has a 90-Degree Fitting

GasStop Stainless Steel Hose

If your propane setup is in a particularly small or cramped compartment, the 90-degree ACME connection on this GasGear hose makes it quick and easy to hook up to your tank. This helps prevent the hose from bunching and puts less strain on it, which means it'll last longer. And you can put a cover over your propane tank without the hose snagging the fabric or stop it from fitting over the tank altogether.

The braided stainless steel hose won't crack or tear as easily as traditional rubber hoses, which get stiff after a period of time due to daily wear and tear. The hose is also corrosion-resistant, so it can withstand the elements much better than rubber hoses.

Using the Pressure Gauge to Test for Minor Leaks

GasStop Safety Valve Testing for Minor Leaks

The integrated pressure gauge provides a clear and easy way to tell what your propane tanks gas pressure is while the gas is being used. If it's on "high", there's been an increase in gas pressure, most likely due to excessive heat, and you'll have to cool the tank down. If it's on "gas", then you'll know you still have plenty of usable gas left. And if it's on "low", then it's time to switch out your tanks. The gauge is also rotatable, so it can be used from any angle, though it is recommended to keep it no lower than 45 degrees from the sky.

The gauge can also be used to test for minor leaks. Once the GasStop safety valve has been installed and the gas appliances have been turned off, push down on the gauge 4 to 6 times to see what the gas pressure is. If the needle is below the red bar on the gauge, then one or more of the following is the cause: the cylinder valve isn't open, the GasStop safety valve has shut off, you have run out of gas, you haven't pushed the gauge the appropriate number of times, or the temperature is around freezing.

If the needle is above the red bar, note its exact position before turning off the valve on your propane tank. Wait 60 seconds for standard applications and 5 minutes for longer RV gas systems. If the needle is in the same position, you can continue to use your propane system. If the needle dropped during that time, there is a leak somewhere. You shouldn't use your propane system until that leak has been found and repaired.

Installing the Safety Valve

GasStop Safety Valve Installation

This GasStop safety valve is extremely simple to install. Once your propane system and all of your gas appliances have been shut off, tighten the GasStop safety valve onto your propane tank. Then re-attach your regulator and install the hose before checking for any leaks in your propane system. To allow the gas to flow, push down on the gauge face 4-6 times.

Video Transcript for Review of GasStop Propane Fittings - Emergency Shut-Off Valve with 12" Propane Hose - GS77FR

Hi there, I'm Michael with etrailer.com. Today we're gonna take a quick look at this GasStop emergency propane shutoff gauge with 12" long hose. So this is gonna help protect your family against major propane leaks and regulator failure. This is going to turn off your gas supply immediately if either a major leak or a regulator failure is detected. So unlike the safety devices that are built into your propane tanks and into your hoses that cut off the majority of the propane if there's a leak, this system is going to cut off that flow 100%. So you're not gonna have to worry about propane still going through if you have a fire or something like that where it could be very dangerous.

Now when I say it will detect a major leak, it is set up so that it will still allow your normal amount of flow for your propane use, all your appliances and that sort of thing. But if it we're to detect more flow than what you're usually most people use it will then shut off that flow so that it's not going to allow the propane to propel your fires and that sort of thing. So, very nice safety device here to give you some peace of mind. Propane can be kind of an intimidating substance to work with, so knowing that it's gonna be completely shut off if there's a major leak is gonna give you that peace of mind that you need. This is going to have this type one ACME fitting that's gonna be compatible with your travel trailers and fifth wheels.

There is a different design for your class A and class C motor homes that uses a POL connection. So this is designed specifically for your travel trailers and fifth wheels. It's got a brass and reinforced polycarbonate construction so it is gonna be extremely durable. It's corrosion resistant. It's gonna last a nice long time for you.

You can see on the top here we do have this rotating pressure gauge that's going to give us a very quick glance at what's going on in our tank. So whether we have high pressure, sufficient gas or if we're nearing empty, we can easily see that on the top there and we can rotate to whichever side's most convenient for us to see. This will allow us to test for minor leaks based on the pressure in our system. And then if you're we're to experience a leak and we're to shut down that flow, it's very easy to reset it. You just push that in four to six times and that will reactivate it and allow your propane to flow through again.

It's also very simple to get installed with that ACME fitting. You just tighten it onto your existing propane tanks' gas cylinder and then we've got our hose there that we'll tighten in on the other side. So this is gonna be kind of in line with what you're probably used to using but it is gonna add a little bit of space for you. So you can see what we're adding on here. Just a little over 3". I'm gonna call it 3 1/8" from where we're used to attaching. To add that in our overall links for the device itself is right about 4". Our height is going to be measured from the top of our gauge here to the bottom of our ACME fitting and that is approximately 2 3/4". And then our width is gonna be this ACME fitting that's the widest portion of the whole unit and that's just shy of 2", about 1 7/8" wide. And so adding in that 3" is gonna make some of your tighter fitting setups gonna be kind of a tight fit for you. So having this 90 degree angle on our pigtail hose is going to allow this to fit in for into your small or cramped spaces. Having this is going to help with your covers for your propane tanks, making sure that it's not gonna have to have a nice wide bend. You have that 90 degree angle so it can stay tight and confined for you and so that you can still fit those covers on without having to worry about the hose snagging them and that sort of thing. Now this is a 12" long gas gear braided stainless steel pigtail hose. So unlike your rubber hoses, you're not gonna have to worry about this stiffening or cracking over time. It's gonna hold up really well for you. This does have the type one ACME connection on the one end. On the other end, it's a 1/4" male inverted flare so that will connect to your regulator for you. This has a 250 psi maximum pressure rating and a 200,000 BTU maximum flow capacity. Both of these are going to be UL and CSA approved and so you can trust they are gonna do a good job for you. And obviously, with propane you wanna make sure you're dealing with quality products so you don't have to worry about leaks and that sort of thing. This is gonna be a great option for you. So that completes our look for today. Again, I'm Michael with etrailer.com. Thanks for watching..
