GasStop ACME vs POL Graphic

Note: This valve is only meant to be used on travel trailers and fifth wheels that have the ACME connection fitting. Please see the graphic above to double check what type of valve you need.

You're headed to the next campsite, and in the chaos of packing up, you forgot to turn off your propane system. While on the road, someone rear ends you, causing a propane line to come loose, and you now run the risk of a fire breaking out on your RV. It's a dreaded situation that no one wants to suffer through.

Unlike EFVs and other built-in limiters that just reduce the flow of gas, GasStop shut-off safety valve immediately and completely shuts off your gas supply when it detects either a major leak in your propane system or major failure of your regulator. This protects both your family and your travel trailer or fifth wheel, ensuring that your camping trip remains safe, fun, and worry-freeAnd while this safety valve will shut off for major leaks such as a large break in the hose, it won't shut off for small leaks that result from your regulator's small housing failure or clogged chambers. This means that your furnace or heater won't go out in the middle of the night while camping in the frigid mountains over a small, less dangerous leak.

2-Stage, Vertical Regulator

2-Stage, Vertical Regulator

This 2-stage regulator lowers the pressure coming from your propane tank so you can use it to power the stove, water heater, and other appliances in your RV. In the first stage, they'll reduce the tank pressure to 10 psi to stabilize the gas, and in the second stage, it'll reduce the pressure to a maximum of 11" WC to ensure the gas is safe to use. With a maximum flow rate of 400,000 Btu per hour, you and your family can safely turn on and operate multiple appliances at once without them flaming out.

GasGear Stainless Steel Hose has a 90-Degree Fitting

GasStop Stainless Steel Hose

If your propane setup is in a particularly small or cramped compartment, the 90-degree ACME connection on this GasGear hose makes it quick and easy to hook up to your tank. This helps prevent the hose from bunching and puts less strain on it, which means it'll last longer. And you can put a cover over your propane tank without the hose snagging the fabric or stop it from fitting over the tank altogether.

The braided stainless steel hose won't crack or tear as easily as traditional rubber hoses, which get stiff after a period of time due to daily wear and tear. The hose is also corrosion-resistant, so it can withstand the elements much better than rubber hoses.

Using the Pressure Gauge to Test for Minor Leaks

GasStop Safety Valve Testing for Minor Leaks

The integrated pressure gauge provides a clear and easy way to tell what your propane tanks gas pressure is while the gas is being used. If it's on "high", there's been an increase in gas pressure, most likely due to excessive heat, and you'll have to cool the tank down. If it's on "gas", then you'll know you still have plenty of usable gas left. And if it's on "low", then it's time to switch out your tanks. The gauge is also rotatable, so it can be used from any angle, though it is recommended to keep it no lower than 45 degrees from the sky.

The gauge can also be used to test for minor leaks. Once the GasStop safety valve has been installed and the gas appliances have been turned off, push down on the gauge 4 to 6 times to see what the gas pressure is. If the needle is below the red bar on the gauge, then one or more of the following is the cause: the cylinder valve isn't open, the GasStop safety valve has shut off, you have run out of gas, you haven't pushed the gauge the appropriate number of times, or the temperature is around freezing.

If the needle is above the red bar, note its exact position before turning off the valve on your propane tank. Wait 60 seconds for standard applications and 5 minutes for longer RV gas systems. If the needle is in the same position, you can continue to use your propane system. If the needle dropped during that time, there is a leak somewhere. You shouldn't use your propane system until that leak has been found and repaired.

Installing the Safety Valve

GasStop Safety Valve Installation

This GasStop safety valve is extremely simple to install. Once your propane system and all of your gas appliances have been shut off, tighten the GasStop safety valve onto your propane tank. Then re-attach your regulator and install the hose before checking for any leaks in your propane system. The regulator should be installed vertically so any water can leak out. And to allow the gas to flow, push down on the gauge face 4-6 times. An adapter fitting and sealant tape are included.

Video Transcript for Review of GasStop Propane Fittings - Shut-Off Gauge with Hose and Regulator - GS79FR

Hi, there, I'm Michael with etrailer.com. Today we're gonna take a quick look at this GasStop Emergency Propane Shut-Off Gauge with the 18" long hose and the two-stage vertical regulator. So this setup is gonna help protect your family against major propane leaks and regulator failure. This is going to turn off your gas supply immediately if it does sense any leaks or failure. So unlike the safety devices that are built into your propane tank, into your hose, that will shut off the majority of the supply. They still leave between 5 and 20% of your supply is still flowing through.

So this system is going to shut off 100% of that flow, so you don't have to worry about a continued propane leaking out. If you we're to have a fire or something like that it could be very dangerous. So this is gonna be very safe for you, making sure that the propane is cut off completely if there is a leak. Now this design is gonna be compatible with your travel trailers and fifth-wheels. There is a different design for your class A and class C type RVs, so you wanna make sure you're getting the right one for you.

But this does have this rotating pressure gauge on the valve that's gonna give you an very easy to see view of what's in your tank. So you can see if you have high pressure, sufficient gas and if you're nearing the end of your capacity there or your supply. And this will also allow you to test for minor leaks. And if you we're to experience a leak where it shuts down, it's very simple to reset it. All you have to do is press this in four to six times and that will reset the system, so it will allow your propane to flow through again.

Very simple to get this installed. It does have this type-1 ACME fitting, that will tighten onto your existing propane tanks gas cylinder. This is gonna add a little bit of space for you as you can see here. So our overall length, we're looking at about three and 15/16, just shy of four inches. And then our height, we're about two and three quarters of an inch and our width is about one and 7/8 of an inch.

So it is gonna add a little bit for you, once you get this plugged in place. And so then that makes our hose here all the more valuable because it does have 90 degree ACME fitting. So it's going to allow your hose to come down instead of sticking out, potentially taking up even more room, as this will allow you to get your propane tank connected in a small or cramped space, will allow you to place a cover over the propane tank without the hose snagging it. And it is a nice braided stainless steel construction, so it's not going to stiffen or crack like your rubber hoses. So this does have the type-1 ACME connection here. We have a overall length of 18 inches and then our outlet fitting is a quarter inch male inverted flare. So then we have our included brass adapter fitting, that's got that quarter inch female inverted flare connection there. And then it's got the quarter inch male NPT fitting, that will connect to our regulator here. So this is a two-stage vertical regulator that's going to lower the pressure from your tank, so it can be safely used for your RV appliances. This is gonna have a max flow rate of 400,000 BTU per hour. So it is one of the highest flow rates available. This is a downward facing vent that's going to allow for condensation to leak out of your tank, so you don't have to worry about that condensation building up. And then it is going to have that quarter inch female MPT fitting as I mentioned. And then the outlet is going to be that 3/8" FPT fitting, so you can get it hooked up to the rest of your system. They do also include some sealant tape here. This is a half inch wide tape. You're gonna get about 236 feet or sorry, 236 inches of tape here. So it should be plenty to make sure that your connections are gonna be nice and secure for you. This system is going to meet federal requirements. The valve and hose are UL and CSA approved. Your regulator is UL 144 approved and the sealant tape is UL and ULC approved to 1000 psi. So a really nice setup here to make sure that your propane is going to be shut off in the case of a leak or failure, to make sure that everything's gonna be protected. You're not gonna have to worry about it while you're out enjoying your time in your travel trailer or fifth-wheel. That completes our look for today. Again, I'm Michael with etrailer.com. Thanks for watching..
