Installation

This custom-fit T-One connector plugs into your vehicle's wiring harness, which is located both behind the driver's-side tail light and beneath your vehicle. You will have to remove the tail light assembly to access this harness.

T-One Connection Location Points Behind Tail Lights

Once you've plugged in the T-connector, run the hot lead up to your car battery. Connect the lead to the included fuse holder, and then connect the fuse holder to the positive terminal on your battery and insert the provided fuse.

Once installation is complete, the 4-way flat connector will be stowed in an out-of-the-way location within your cargo area.

It is recommended that you use a small amount of grease on all electrical connections - the plugs on your automobile and the 4-pole connector itself - to help prevent corrosion.

ModuLite Powered Tail Light Converter

A ModuLite power module is built into this T-One connector. Because most trailers run on a two-wire system - wherein the brake and turn signals are carried on one wire - the separate brake and turn signals from your vehicle's three-wire system need to be combined so they are compatible with the wiring system of your trailer. This power module functions as a tail light converter to combine the brake and turn signal functions of your automobile so that they run on one wire to properly activate your trailer's tail lights. Note: This will not affect how the tail lights on your vehicle operate.

With a ModuLite, your trailer's lights will be powered without overloading your vehicle's electrical system. Because the module draws power directly from your car's battery and bypasses the electrical routes that are used by a basic wiring harness, there is virtually no draw on your tail light circuits.

Just got done installing the 118526 wiring harness on my 2015 Kia Sportage and there are two things I don't like. First, I noticed that when I use the turn signals, only the lights on the trailer flash, not on the car. I think it is important that the car's lights operate as well. Second, the flashing rate with the wiring harness is much faster than it was with out the setup. I prefer the previous flashing rate. Is there a solution for either of these issues?

To be honest I have not heard of only the trailer lights working and not the vehicle lights. I recommend making sure that the connectors are snapped in tightly and to re-check that the ground is ground to bare metal. I am afraid that there is not anything that I can recommend to change the speed of the flashing.

by:
2015 Kia Sportage

It was a little more involved than I anticipated due to the "compact" nature of the Kia but I took my time and the finished install turned out perfect for me. I routed power along side of wire harness inside due to trim removal being easy (as long as the installer has experience working with interior trim). I also routed the 4pin connector through the grommet and attached to bracket.

I ordered the hitch and wiring package and saved a lot. Due to my lack of thorough research, I discovered later that there was a wiring kit that didn't require me splicing into any wires, so I bought one of those. Kept my vehicle warranty intact. I'll save the old wiring kit for something else, lol. I have no complaints, the hitch and wiring both came quickly, selecting right parts were easy, and installation was a no brainer. I have a 2014 Kia Sportage , install took me an hour and a half. I could do it now in 45 mins or less. I only had to buy a panel remover tool so I didn't break the panel tabs, and an electrical tester, all from the cheap tool place. My hitch is on , wirings routed and all without having to Jack the car off the ground. Looking forward to the vacation drive with everything packed in the trailer instead of blocking my view out of the back window , or the kids packed in like sardines. I'll add, I have spent a lot of time wrenching on cars or motorcycles but wiring always makes me nervous. That's why I scrapped the splice in and went for the easy connect T 1 harness. I'd recommend it all day. Hardest part was removing the tailight. I stole the great idea of using a tie down ( I used a bungee cord) to hold back the panel while I worked. I'm a real guy, value my time and my money and don't like paying shops for what could be an easy job. I didn't plan on taking time to write a lengthy review but etrailer earned it and I'd do it again. Thanks so much for making it easy and affordable and best of all for the big thanks and "good job" my wife gave me . But the credits yours. Good job guys!
Sincerely, Devin S. Sacramento , Ca. Sorry no pics

Our family is three days away from our annual church campout. Well be hauling a trailer for the second time and I havent given a second thought to the durability and perform an e of our trailer hitch we purchased around this time last year. Our vehicle was involved in a rear send collision this year and the hitch suffered no damage. The wiring was damaged to one rear blinker assembly but the quick connect harness made replacing that section a snap for the body shop. Ill say it was something I immediately asked the shop to check in case it needed replacement because it is invaluable to our family and friends who now count on us to haul extra equipment for them. Its been a blessing to us and we look forward to more use in the future. I know if there had been a problem caused by the accident Id be calling to order another. Thanks for the great service you all provide and hope you all at etrailer have a blessed and prosperous year.

Thank you so much for your review. I am glad to hear that everyone is ok! Just a quick note – when your vehicle has been involved in an accident, the manufacturer recommends that you replace the hitch or hitch accessory due to potential unseen damage resulting from the collision.

This product was relatively easy to install, instructions were easy to follow. The installation of the wire to the battery was the most difficult, but with careful lacing through the car's undercarriage it can be done. (Having the car on a lift would have helped considerably. I use the wiring harness every week, towing a small trailer for my riding mower. I would recommend it to anyone considering putting a towing upgrade on their Sportage.

The product continues to be in use and functions very well. Would continue to recommend.

by:
2013 Kia Sportage

The product was just what you stated it was, had no trouble installing it. and was fast shipping. will purchase from your company again.
The one item we thought you could change is the how to install video, at the end where they just drop the wires out the back of the car to attach to your trailer etc. How stupid!! we brought them out the same whole the other wires went into under the car and attached them to the hitch.

After a couple of years of having a live wire dangling on your hitch in all the water and road salt you may change your mind. The corrosion on the plug eventually ruins the connector, even if you wrap it in tape or coat it in grease it seeps in anyway. An electrical differential live wire on a part exposed to water and salt greatly accelerates corrosion. The plug cap provided does not completely seal the connector. Youre much better off keeping the plug inside the car until you need it for towing, protecting it from corrosion. Theres a reason why the manufacturers have you do it this way.

Very good points. It is a trade-off, ease of access outside the vehicle or protection from the elements inside.

So far I'm very pleased with etrailer. The product was shipped and delivered as promised. I have not installed the product yet. I'm a little worried since all the paper work say it's for a 2011 KIA and I'm installing it on a 2015. I'm putting faith in etrailer that this is the correct produce since this is the one the website said to use. Time will tell.

One suggestion - you can fish the power line under the skid plate versus having to let the skid plate down.

Excellent item.

After a year I have experienced an issue with one of the turn signals at the trailer itself, plan to do some basic troubleshooting and assume it to be a simple loose connection unrelated to the kit. The product is working as promised!

I purchased this for my 2011 Kia Sportage, but I couldn't get the side panel off to install it. So the unit still sits on my work bench. It looks like a great item, but I haven't figured out how to install it.

10/11/2019

Per the current installation instructions, you will not want to completely remove the side panel as that could cause damage to your vehicle. I have attached the installation instructions for you. I have also linked two different install videos on Kia Sportages to show two different installation styles. In one video, the installer uses a trim panel tool to partially release the panel to get more room to work, but in the other video the installer doesnt move this side panel at all.

by:
2011 Kia Sportage

Works fabulous. Never cut a stock wire, pain to remove all the plastic panels on the car, but once there the connectors went in easily. Thanks.

8/8/2014

Perfectly. Because a slight change in my vehicles wiring, the installation took a little bit longer than anticipated, but all together, less than 2 hours installation and everythingxs worked great since.

by:
2014 Kia Sportage

Product works great and easy to install for a person who has some knowledge working with tools and electrical. Installed in about 1 hour and connector hides easily under trunk cover. Down side, connector hangs out of trunk lid and trunk pinches wiring later damaging wire insulation exposing wires. Would be nice a redesign of connector running under vehicle to tow hitch and with a mounting bracket.

by:
2014 Kia Sportage

Easy to follow instructions from videos. Didn’t even look at paper instructions. Hardest part was tail light removal as not much to grab onto and the fear of damaging the light. After a few rocks back & forth it came free. Also had a little trouble with the main connector under the car. Tried with screwdrivers & pliers but it would not release. Watched the video again and with my bare hands, as the installer did, it came right apart. So helpful.
I watched the install of the same part on a model year before & after to see another viewpoint. One showed where a factory ground point was near the area and I didn’t have to drill into the floor for the ground. Would like the ground wire a little longer to accommodate this method.
Install took about 1 1/2 hour as I had to jack up the car to run the main power wire. Would recommend using ramps to make it easer. Not a lot of room under the vehicle when on the ground.
Worked first time right out of the box.
4 pin plug inside/outside debate: I left mine inside as I will rarely use it but I can see where it isn’t convenient for daily use. I get the fact it is protected but just saying.
Would recommend and use etrailer again.

2011 Kia Sportage

equipment is as advertised and easy to install. the most difficult part was running the 12 ga. wire from the back of the car to the battery under the hood. I did this by snaking it carefully along the undercarriage and zip tied where possible to the brakeline for a secure placement. Also, i did clip the zip tie from the provided rubber grommet to thread the 12 ga. wire through there with the other wires as well. Secured the bundle of wires in the grommet with a new zip tie.

I did have one error on the installation by putting the 12 ga. connector on the negative terminal of the battery (i misread the instructions - didn't make sense, but i put it there). When the lights didn't work, a friend double checked me and pointed out my error. Working well now.

by:
2013 Kia Sportage

Very nice product. Everything was plug and play and exactly as described. The most challenging part, which was also the portion that had the most grey area in the instructions and videos was the routing of the power wire. I followed the brake likes up to the engine compartment and just zip tied them to the brackets and lines as they stay away from the exhaust and pinch points. Other than that - this product was plug and play and works great.

by:

Really nice harness! They were out of it and sent me the Hopkins but it ended up having a bad black box so they sent me this one as a replacement. I like it alot better than the Hopkins. Installation was easy. The hardest part was laying on the ground under the car routing the hot wire. Took me about 2 hours to install but I'm a perfectionist. Highly recommend this harness. Thanks etrailer!

If you already have a brake controller that connects via 4 wires, like the popular Prodigy P3 # 90195, then you will need a 4-Way wiring harness like the recommended T-One # 118526 and the Universal Wiring Kit # ETBC7. The T-One provides the standard tail light functions from your 2016 Kia Sportage to your trailer and then the ETBC7 kit adds the 12V and brake controller functions as well. • Towing Capabilities and Recommended Towing Accessories for 2016 Kia Sportage
According to the owner's manual, the 2016 Sportage can tow 1000 lbs, or 2000 lbs if the trailer is equipped with brakes. The maximum trailer tongue weight (maximum amount of weight that can safely be suspended from the hitch) is 200 lbs. The Curt Class III Hitch, part # C13120 would be an excellent choice. As you can see, the hitch itself has higher capacities than the vehicle does, but because the vehicle's capacities are lower, you'll be limited to the capacities of the vehicle. For...

  • Will Removal of T-One Wiring Harness or Blown Fuse Affect Tail Lights on 2011 Kia Sportage?
Should you suffer a blown fuse, or intentionally remove the fuse after installing the T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness, # 118526, the tail lights will remain functional on your 2011 Kia Sportage. The fuse is still necessary for working trailer lights however, and it is recommended you keep it in.
