Video Transcript for Mighty Cord 5th Wheel and Gooseneck Wiring Harness Installation - 2023 Chevrolet Silverado 2500

Hey guys, it's Jake here with etrailer. Today we have a 2023 Chevy Silverado 2500. We're gonna be taking a look at and I'm gonna show you how to install the Valterra Mighty Cord gooseneck and fifth wheel wiring kit. Installing the 7-pole in the bed of your truck is, to me, a very important accessory to have in your truck if you plan on towing a fifth wheel or gooseneck. I like having everything that I need to connect the gooseneck or fifth wheel in the bed of the truck. So having a 7-way in the bed of your truck is going to make it that much easier.

Otherwise, people will usually drape your 7-pole over top of your tailgate, which can cause a couple of problems. One being that that cord, every time you make a turn or drive down the highway, is vibrating against the back of your tailgate, which is not good for the cord. You can eventually wear through the insulation on the cord or potentially scratch up or mark up your tailgate. Another thing is if you're plugging into your bumper and you put your tailgate down to unlatch your gooseneck or fifth wheel, you decide to pull away and your trailer's still hooked up, the electric is still hooked up, you could pull up, rip the plug right out of your truck or out of your camper. So having it in the bed of your truck will allow you to connect everything on your fifth wheel or gooseneck that you need to, and then also connect the 7-pole.

You can come around after everything's latched up, plug in your 7-pole, put your tailgate up, and you're ready to roll. Now, when it comes to the insulation, it's going to be extremely easy in our '23 Silverado 2500 because it'll come with a prep kit, which is just a filler plug for an opening that they already have here. And with the help of this Curt adapter, it's gonna look as about as factory as you can get. That being said, let's go ahead and show you how to do it. To begin our installation, we'll take a trim panel tool or a screwdriver.

You're gonna have two tabs on the inside of this plug that we need to remove. Pop it out. Usually if you get one, you can pry on the other. It'll come out. There we go.

One of those rings just fell off. That's okay 'cause we won't be reinstalling this. You might wanna hold onto it if you ever decide to take your wiring back out. But this wiring is literally as easy as sticking these, the pigtail end or the T end of it down through your wheel well. Make sure it comes out which we see there. We'll tie up all our excess length down underneath. We're gonna be using the Curt adapter plate which is designed to cover up the majority of this opening. We'll slide the plug through there. Take our new plug. Snap it in place, make sure it's secured, and then slide our adapter plate over. Tie or plug your opening, and then snap the Curt adapter plate in place. We will secure this using the four self-tappers included in the Curt kit. The Valterra kit will come with some self-tapping screws if you're not using the Curt adapter, but I highly recommend using it 'cause of the clean finish. The Curt screws are gonna be a little bit longer. (drill whirs) With everything secured up here, we'll go underneath and make our connection. Now underneath our truck, we have our spare tire removed just for ease of visibility. We have this white tab here. We'll pop it back, press down on the tab. Sometimes you have to push in on this tab, push in on the plug, and then pull out. So we can take our pigtail here and I'm gonna route it in such a fashion that the wiring is not gonna get in the way of anything. We're up and over this. And typically, in this area right back here is where I like to spool up the excess 'cause there's more than enough space here. You can spool it up right here if you want, but it's just kind of a tight area. Take this. Plug these two connections together. Make sure it clicks, up that tab, and then take our new plug and plug it into the factory. Give it a tug, make sure it doesn't come off. And just like that, you've tied into the 7-pole on the back of your truck by your bumper which will give you full functioning of your 7-pole up in the bed of your truck. All there's left to do is get this wiring all zip tied up. All we have left to do is test out our wiring. We'll hook up our tester box here. That's good. We're already showing 12 volts to the plug. We'll go ahead and run through our functions. We have our left turn, right turn, running lights, and brake lights. With everything working properly, that's gonna do it for a look at and insulation of the Valterra Mighty Cord gooseneck and fifth wheel and bed wiring kit.

Perfect plug and play 5th wheel harness. Shipping is slow and expensive…

by:

Excellent kit. Easy plug and play. Came with tie wraps and sheet metal screws. Only thing it didn’t come with is the dielectric grease so I suppose if it were necessary they would have included it.

Installed on the right side wall of 2018 Nissan Titan XD. Truck has puck system for gooseneck but Nissan didn’t install this in wall until the 2019 trucks which is rather dumb since 2016 with this model and ending with the diesel 2019.

Super easy installation!

by:
2014 Ram 2500

Once the location of the hole was figured out it is plug and play very easy

by:

Easy ordering and fast shipping, works great. UPS sucks, it too 4 days and 1000 miles to travel 135 miles. But Etrailer has already been excellent

by:

This wiring harness fit my needs perfectly. Transaction with E-Trailer was excellent.

by:

Great Product. Easy to install. Took about 30 minutes start to finish.

by:

Had to drill 21/8” hole for plug because factory hole was too big

by:

This was a great addition to the tow vehicle. I no longer have the pig tail hanging over the tailgate. I now plug it inside the bed of the truck easy to install and works wonderful

It works great. It took very little time to install and is a great addition to my truck. It is much easier to hook up and the cord is in the bed of the truck. I have unhitched the trailer without unplugging the cord with no damages. GREAT PURCHASE

by:

The torklift frame mount camper tied downs are awesome. The 5th wheel wiring harness was easy install. Glad to see you have products that make things possible. Thanks.

by:

Easy to follow instructions, install was a breeze. All 5th wheelers should have this to prevent damage to umbilical or paint on tailgate.

by:

Very easy install. Worked perfectly. Very satisfied. 2008 superduty.

by:

The harness was delivered in great shape and the installation was straight forward. With all hardware within the kit, I didn't have to search in my garage for anything to complete the install. It is as advertised as a plug and play and works as advertised.

Good communication

by:

Exactly as described, easy to install in the bed of my F350, my 5er can now plug in the bed instead of at the factory 7 pin at the bumper. Excellent product.

by:

Great product! Good thick wiring covered in convoluted wiring wrap. Easy to install, took longer to brainstorm an area to mount and drill a hole in my new pickup than to actually install the product. Connectors are solid with a easy snap into place design identical to factory pigtails.

by:

  • Curt 5th Wheel Rail Custom Bracket Installation on a 2005 Ford F-350
You are correct. There are 4 bolts that only get attached to the bed itself when using the Curt Custom Fifth Wheel Bracket Kit # C16448 and rails # C16104 (gloss black) or # C16204 (carbide/matte black). I've attached a video of this installation to assist. You may also want to consider adding a second 7-way like the Mighty Cord 5th Wheel/Gooseneck Wiring Harness w/ 7-Pole Connector - 7' Long # A10-7007 which will give you a clean look and easy connection access when towing.

If you're looking for a budget fifth wheel and gooseneck hitch setup for a 2003 Ford F-250 I recommend the Reese 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch part # RP30051 which is one of the most effective dual jaw hitches. The dual jaws will provide a much smoother ride than a slide-bar. In regards to mounting, I'd recommend a custom kit which is going to be much easier to install and would not require drilling into the frame.
