Installation

This custom-fit T-connector plugs into your vehicle's wiring harness, which is located behind the driver's-side and passenger's-side tail lights. You will have to remove the trunk floor coverings and rear scuff panel and pull back on the trunk liner to access these connection points. Once you've plugged in the T-connector, run the hot lead up to your car battery. Connect the lead to the included fuse holder, and then connect the fuse holder to the positive terminal on your battery.

Once installation is complete, the 4-way connector will be stowed in your cargo area.

It is recommended that you use a small amount of grease on all electrical connections - the plugs on your automobile and the 4-pole connector itself - to help prevent corrosion.

Powered Tail Light Converter with Surface-Mount Technology

A tail light converter is built into this T-connector. This converter is a circuit-protected, battery-powered unit that bypasses the electrical routes that are used by a basic wiring harness. As a result, there is virtually no draw on your tail light circuits.

Because most trailers run on a two-wire system - wherein the brake and turn signals are carried on one wire - the separate brake and turn signals from your vehicle's three-wire system need to be combined so they are compatible with the wiring system of the trailer. This converter combines the brake and turn signal functions of your automobile so that they run on one wire to properly activate your trailer's tail lights. Note: This will not affect how the tail lights on your vehicle operate.

Curt builds each tail light converter using surface-mount technology (SMT). This method of construction involves soldering electronic components directly to the surface of a printed circuit board. SMT eliminates the need for leads, which are used in older through-hole technology. The result is a circuit board that is smaller yet provides more routing area and that offers superior performance, reliability and durability.

Curt SMT Circuit Boards

Circuit boards constructed using SMT have been shown to perform better under rough conditions with excessive vibration than those made using the through-hole method. And where would vibration be more likely to occur than in towing applications? Curt converters also produce less heat, leading to increased durability and longer life. In addition, lower levels of resistance ensure better performance, especially for parts that operate at higher frequencies.

Each Curt circuit board is made using high-quality components that are pieced together in the most technologically savvy fashion, leading to greater predictability and reliability in functioning.

Super duper. Took me half day to install because I do not like running it out trunk so I did a permanent bracket underneath and ran the cable out the rear left. Also the routing of the power cable home run from batter back to trunk took hella long. Search YouTube for running power cable for AMPs to trunk. Goo recs for running along drivers side and back.

I would never recommend buying any product from their website, just go to local dealer to make a purchase. I purchased the light harness from etrailer.com after installing the hitch receiver, the shipment was delayed, it arrived 2 weeks later than the expected date. I had to purchase a universal light harness from U-Haul because I needed it urgently. The light harness arrived at my old place after I moved to a different city, I had to pay Tax to get it and I needed to pay another shipping fee in order to return the product. This isn't really my fault for paying these extra money for a useless product, if it couldn't arrive on time I could have been told when I make the purchase, and I wouldn't even buy it. The wrong information was provided wasting my time and money.

Package comes complete and easy to understand. Hookups at tail lights easy to install. Modern cats have plugs built in so no cutting wires. Plug and play. Only hard part is running hot wire to battery, but that is no fault of etrailer. Not easy to feed wire through firewall on WRX. I would recommend this product to anyone needing trailer lighting.

by:

Decent value and installation was easy...I Recommend this product

by:

Nice that everything is plug and play besides the main power feed, supplied enough extra wire to run all the way to the battery.

If I had one negative to add (for the install video), running the power cord under the carpet to the firewall and then to the battery is safer and preferred against going out the bottom of the car (spare tire), exposed to elements.

The kit was fantastic. It works well and includes plenty of bits and bobs needed to perform the install. The quality of the parts seem great, and time will tell if it holds up but I've no reason to think it won't be bulletproof for the life of the vehicle.

Why not 5 stars? Well, for me, having a 2017 STI, there was no way I was going to run a 12v power line under the chassis. I opted to route through the firewall using Perrin 1.5" grommets, Mishimoto sound tube delete kit, and run the power wire under the interior panels to the trunk. I did this by crossing from driver side to passenger side, and by the time I reached the trunk, I was about 4 feet short of cable.

So, I took off a star for that darn power cable being a bit too short for an installation like mine. But, if you're doing it some other way, maybe you won't need more than the length provided.

Great kit. Will buy again for my next STI in 3-5 years.

Sold the STI after 3 months of ownership. It was too small and even with a trailer hitch to tow our gear, the gas tank was too small. Sold it and bought a Jeep Grand Cherokee Trailhawk. Couldnt be happier.

Quick shipping and excellent packaging. Since I already have a sub in my trunk, this product was extremely easy to install. Otherwise, you will need to run a wire from the battery to the trunk (which can be mildly difficult if you've never done it before). This wire ensures the trailer lights don't overload your taillights (possibly causing a fuse somewhere to blow or a dimming effect in your taillights). If you don't want to run a wire to the battery you can just tap off one of the tail lights and carry a replacement fuse lol (I'm an electrical engineer). I highly recommend this product.

Brandon, Thank you for your review. We do not recommend running the power wire to any other source besides the vehicle battery to avoid overloading your vehicles electrical system. Not all vehicles can handle powering trailer lights and has to draw the power from the battery. I have attached a link to help with routing this power wire.

by:

Works well. Was hard to run power wire up to battery.

by:
Saturn Relay

This install is not for the faint of heart. To do a clean install I had to remove all of the plastic trim down the drivers side of the car, partially remove the fuse box and relay box under the dash and cut a slit in the carpet above the clutch. Total install time was about 8 hours to complete. The instructions also say to just drape the 4 prong wire out of the trunk when towing which is not an acceptable method of wire routing. I do recommend this product, but consider having a professional install it. Beyond the install, the harness works as intended and is unobtrusive when installed.

by:

Go great with the Wrx hitch, install was a breeze if you are at a minimum slightly diy. Anyone can install, go ahead and get it and try it even if you are hesitant! etrailer is a great place to buy your things from, I will always continue to use them!

by:

Installation went smoothly. The most difficult part is finding a way to rout a wire from the battery to the trunk. I eventually found a plug on the door post and poked the wire through that to gain entry into the interior, and then it was straightforward pulling up trim along the door sill and running the wire to the back. The end result is very clean; I have one additional wire attached to my battery positive connector, and it disappears into the fender a few inches from the battery.

by:

This adapter is well made and a perfect plug and play. However, it does require a separate power feed from the battery. I was fortunate to already have a heavy gauge power wire running to my trunk for my audio system, and was able to tap into that and avoid running a separate wire all the way up to the battery.

by:

Just received my package. Looking forward to the install. I like the plug n play idea, no cutting or splicing wires. I plan on getting the invisi trailer hitch for my 2016 STI.

by:

As ordered. Thanks so much!

I’ve never took the time to make a good review on a company, but this company I felt deserved it. etrailer took the time verified and changed my order after I already paid to make it correct, speedy shipping, easy install instructions, great quality product. Couldn’t have asked for a better experience.

by:

Great product, and even more importantly, great company (etrailer)! I was under a time crunch, and Melinda was incredibly helpful. She ensured that the shipment went out the same day I ordered and was delivered via next day air. Wonderful customer service! I highly recommend both Curt products and etrailer!

Great packaging, great instructions. The receiver is very beefy with a great quality powder coat finish. For this intermediate level mechanic, installation time was exactly what was promised. Easy order, good pricing, and quick delivery.

Good Job!

by:

Was very easy to hookup. Running the power wire is the hardest part. I have an amp and sub in my trunk so I was able to just tie into that power wire instead of running to the battery. Well worth the money.
