When you apply the brakes in your tow vehicle, deceleration occurs and momentum pushes your trailer toward the rear of your vehicle. With surge brake systems, the actuator is triggered as your trailer moves forward while the tow vehicle slows. The actuator telescopes, applying force to its master cylinder, which in turn supplies the necessary hydraulic pressure to engage the trailer's brakes.

Because this model does not include a reverse lockout, it is recommended that you equip your trailer with free-backing brakes so that you can drive in reverse without triggering your trailer's brakes.

Video Transcript for Review of Titan Brake Actuator - Surge Brake Actuator - T1664300

Today, we'll be taking a look at the Titan Brake Actuator. This is gonna act as a mechanical sort of brake controller for our trailer basically as we come to a stop in our towing vehicle. Our trailer's gonna wanna keep moving forward and that's gonna push against the actuator, which will activate it and then push hydraulic fluid to our brakes bringing our trailer to a stop. So, it's kind of a push pull system, makes for a mechanical brake controller. This works with our hydraulic drum brakes so we'll see at the back we'll have our connection point there for the hydraulic line. At the top, we'll have a cap for our reservoir.

We pop that off. I have to use a screwdriver, you might not have to. I just have kind of weak fingers. And then at the top, we'll have our cap for that reservoir and it does have a little label on there printed to use DOT type three fluid. So, handy little reminder on what it needs to use.Can unthread that and fill that reservoir there with our fluid as needed.

You'll also notice that we'll have this chain that's gonna be our breakaway switch so in the event that our trailer comes accidentally disconnected from our towing vehicle, it's going to activate that level at the top and bring our trailer to a stop. So, it'll pull that lever and that'll activate our breaks to bring our trailer to a stop. You'll just run this chain up to your towing vehicle. It's got a little S hook on the end so you wanna attach that to your safety chain loops on your hitch. Now it's a primed finish so that'll help to keep down rust and corrosion but since it's just primed you will want to paint this over again to make sure that it's completely rust resistant. We'll also have a greaser up here at the top so you can do a little maintenance here, make sure everything's lubricated and working properly.

Has a roller design to help reduce any resistance whenever that actuator's telescoping out to create that nice straight line movement. The construction is a durable steel so that's gonna help to resist any kind of bending in those jack knife situations where we're coming to a stop and turning at the same time or anything like that. Has the standard heavy duty coupler. This is going to work for ball sizes two and five-sixteenth inch. Has a three inch wide mounting channel.

This is intended for a bolt on application. Three inch wide channel down there at the bottom. We'll have a couple pre-drilled holes to help get that installed. The two narrowest ones are about three inches apart center to center and those two ones that are a little bit lower and wider are about five inches apart center to center. This has a max capacity of 12,500 pounds at a maximum tongue weight of 1250 pounds. It does come with a one year warranty from Titan and that's gonna do it for our look at the Titan Brake Actuator.
