Note: Because this actuator does not include a reverse lockout, it is recommended that you equip your trailer with free-backing brakes so that you can drive in reverse without the actuator triggering your trailer's brakes.
When you apply the brakes in your tow vehicle, deceleration occurs and momentum pushes your trailer toward the rear of your vehicle. With surge brake systems, the hydraulic actuator is triggered as your trailer moves forward, once your tow vehicle starts to slow down. When this happens, the actuator contracts, applying force to its master cylinder. This in turn supplies the necessary hydraulic pressure to engage your trailer's brakes.
Adjustable Channel Design
The adjustable channel on this trailer brake actuator allows for ultimate versatility. Mount almost any type of coupler (sold separately) - from a standard ball coupler to a lunette ring or clevis attachment - to fit your specific application. In addition, the 3 mounting positions on the channel let you adjust the height of the coupler. Just place the coupler so that it matches the height of the ball mount or other hitch attachment on your tow vehicle and you will be able to tow your trailer levelly.

Today we're gonna take a look at the Demco Hydraulic Drum Brake Actuator with the Eight Inch Adjustable Center Channel and a 12,500 pound Weight Capacity. Now this hydraulic actuator will activate your trailer brakes when your tow vehicle slows or stops. Basically what happens is when you apply the brakes in your tow vehicle, deceleration occurs and the momentum will push the trailer toward the rear of your vehicle. So with the surge brake system, this actuator is triggered as your trailer moves forward, once your tow vehicle starts to slow down. So when this happens, the actuator will contract, which applies force to the master cylinder in the back here, then this in turn supplies the necessary hydraulic pressure to engage your trailer brakes. This actuator on the inside uses an acetal copolymer lining, provides a nice, smooth operation as the actuator telescopes in and out. It's made of a heavy duty steel construction, has a nice black powdered coat finish to help resist corrosion. If you noticed, they do include the breakaway. This is the part here that has the hook on it with the cable.
This breakaway will attach to your vehicle's tow vehicle and in any event if this comes detached from your tow vehicle, it would pull on this cable which would activate the master cylinder and cause the brakes to be applied and prevent a runaway situation. Now the master cylinder they use in this actuator is a composite master cylinder, it's very durable and efficient. It's a glass reinforced, nylon construction, resists rust and corrosion. Up here it has a very large reservoir to provide increased capacity to the brake fluid. The very top here, you can see where you put your brake fluid in. Uses an automotive style diaphragm cap, which creates a completely enclosed system to help prevent contamination of the fluid. On the other end, it has an adjustable center channel. It has three different mounting positions for your coupler that folds in here.
Now, the coupler it goes in here is sold separately. The distance between those holes, center to center, is two inches. This is designed to bolt onto your trailer, it's a bolt on installation. Requires half inch by four and a half inch long grade five bolt for bolting it on. Now the bolts are not included. This part is made in the USA. Again, that application for this is trailers with hydraulic drum brakes, gross towing weight capacity is 12,500 pounds.
Maximum towing weight capacity is 1,250 pounds. The inside channel width, upfront here, is three inches. Channel height, we mentioned, is eight inches. Again, the distance between the holes, center to center, gonna be right at two inches. This is designed to mount on a straight, three inch wide trailer tongue. But that should do it for the review on the Demco Hydraulic Drum Brake Actuator with the Eight Inch Adjustable Center Channel and a 12,500 Pound Weight Capacity.
