Video Transcript for Review of Yakima Trailers - Tongue Extension Kit - Y08109

Hello everybody, this is Jeff at etrailer.com. Today we're gonna take a look at this tongue extension kit for your Yakima RackandRoll trailer. Now, this is designed to work with the Yakima RackandRoll trailers manufactured from 2009 and later. Basically, adding this tongue extension will allow you to haul longer loads The overall length when this is installed into your tongue will get you another three foot in length. And I wanted to pop up an insert to show you we're talking about. There's a picture of the Yakima RackandRoll trailer.

It has a cargo box, some bikes and a kayak on it and you can see the long tongue in the front there. So basically you can take that tongue off and then add this extension to gain an extra three foot. And that extra extension of three feet to the trailer will upgrade the capacity of that trailer from being able to carry a single 17 foot long or two 16 foot long boats to a single 22 foot long boat, or two 21 foot long boats. And basically to add this three foot extension to your trailer, what you'll do, as we mentioned you'll remove the standard tongue from the trailer and then insert the shank end right here of the extension into the standard tongue. Line up the holes right here, and then use these included bolts and nuts to secure it.

And then what you want to do is you wanna make sure to plug in the included four-way wiring harness extension sits on the inside of this extension to the standard tongue connection. And then you'll extend it out the back of the extension. And just to show you we're talking about I'm gonna zoom in and lift up this end. And you'll see there's your four-way plug right there that you'll be plugging in. And then on the other shank end, you'll have another four-way plug.

So you wanna make sure to make those connections when you put it all together and tighten it down. And then what you'll do is you'll slide the whole tongue assembly with the extension installed into your Yakima trailer and then plug the four-way connector into the four-way on your trailer. Now, the shank portion right back here is a little bit smaller. This is what'll slide into your tongue. This will measure one and a half inches square.

And then the other end here will measure your normal two inches square. But that should do it for the review on this tongue extension kit for the Yakima RackandRoll Trailer.

Yakima’s tongue extension kit gives you the advantage to be able to transport boats over 17 foot.

Added the extension because I am now towing my Yakima trailer with a sport utility vehicle with the spare tire mounted on the back door so I needed the extra length. I also wanted to be about to open the back of the truck with kayaks attached. The extension was perfect and it also rode much better with the added length. I had no side-to-side sway at 65 mph with four kayaks (two 14ft and two 12 ft) and three surf boards. I used to get a pretty decent amount of sway before. Glad I finally invested in this.

I haven’t had the opportunity to use it yet, and it’s still in its box in my garage. It’s good to have it on hand in case I need the extra length on my Rack & Roll Trailer. Based on the quality of the trailer itself and the quality of the trailer accessories that I’ve purchased, I’m confident that the Tongue Extension is a high-quality piece.

Tongue extender for Yakima Rack & Roll trailer. Extender appears to be made of quality material. The internal electrical extension was installed in the tongue backwards, necessitating a removal and rethreading. The instructions didn't mention the presence of a ground wire that had to be connected to the frame on the existing cable harness. Since it was neither mentioned, nor shown in the instruction photos, I foolishly ignored it, and of course the lights didn't work. I had to pull out enough of the harness to splice onto the ground line, then re-pull harness and ground into the tongue. Of course the head of the ground screw twisted off and I had to drill a new hole in the tongue (what is it made of?) for a new ground screw. After all this aggravation the lights worked! I'm happy with the final installation, but feel the directions were serious deficient in discussing the grounding issue.

Tough item to purchase. E trailer came through. This extension will adapt my trailer to load a 18 foot kayak.

  • How to Carry 2 Heavy Kayaks with a 2015 Subaru Outback
The only solution I can recommend for you that will allow you to transport 2 kayaks that weight 92 lbs each would be to go with a Yakima Rack and Roll trailer # Y08106 with the tongue extender # Y08109 which is needed for the length of your kayaks. The roof capacity of your 2015 Subaru Outback Wagon isn't high enough for what you are trying to do so I can't recommend anything that would allow you to exceed this figure. First let's start with a hitch. For that you will want the Draw-Tite...

  • Tie Down Strap Recommendation for Securing 2 Kayaks on Yakima Rack and Roll Trailer
If you use the Tongue Extension Kit # Y08109 along with your Rack and Roll Trailer # Y08107 then you will be able to transport your two 18-foot kayaks provided their combined weight does not exceed the trailer's limit of 250-lbs. If you need to add weight capacity to the trailer, use Yakima's heavy-duty shock kit # Y08110 which increases total load carrying to 350-lbs. The tongue extension does not include cargo tie-down points but a ratcheting strap like # EM34423 will help secure the...

  • Can Longer Ball Mount/Extender be Used Instead of Tongue Extender on Yakima Rack'n'Roll Trailer
You could use a hitch extender or a longer ball mount with the Yakima Rack'n'Roll trailer # Y08107. However there are a couple of issues. First, a hitch extender will reduce the tongue weight capacity of the hitch by 50 percent. this may not be an issue though considering the trailer is rated for just 250 pounds. Depending on the length needed though there may not be an extension long enough. The same goes for a longer ball mount; at least if used by itself. The longest fixed ball mount...

  • Does the Tongue Extension Kit for Yakima Rack and Roll Trailer Work With Both the 78" or 66" Trailer
Yes, the Tongue Extension Kit for Yakima Rack and Roll Trailer # Y08109 will work with either the Yakima Rack and Roll Trailer - 78" # Y08107 or the Yakima Rack and Roll Trailer - 66" # Y08106. The Tongue Extension Kit for Yakima Rack and Roll Trailer # Y08109 does include the wiring needed for the extension.

  • Is 1-1/2" Insert for Yakima Rack and Roll Tongue Extension Kit Available Separately
We have the replacement 2" x 2" Rack and Roll Tongue # 8880204 but if you're needing that inner piece on the Tongue Extension Kit # Y08109 then that's only available with the extension kit so you'll need the whole part number.

  • What Size Boats Require the Tongue Extension for Yakima Rack and Roll Trailer
I do recommend adding the Tongue Extension Kit for Yakima Rack and Roll Trailer # Y08109 when carrying boats over 16 feet long with a Yakima Rack N Roll Trailer # Y08107 since it will prevent the boats from contacting the back of your vehicle while turning. It likely isn't going to be completely necessary since it's only about 6 inches of difference and you could likely just slide the boats back 6 inches, but adding the extension ensures there's no contact with the vehicle when making a turn.

  • Can Kayak Be Stored On Rack And Roll Trailer
You should have no problem storing your kayak on the racks of the Yakima Rack and Roll Trailer, part # Y08107. The tongue can be easily removed to provide more room when storing your trailer. The trailer can handle up to 250 lbs so any weight consideration should pose no issues when storing your kayak.. If a longer tongue is needed, I recommend a Tongue Extension Kit,part # Y08109. This attaches simply to your Rack and Roll trailer and extends the tongue an additional 3 ft. If you need...

  • How to Carry a Kayak and a Canoe with a 2016 Ram 1500
We have a couple of different options for you to haul a kayak and canoe with your 2016 Dodge Ram. One way to haul your kayak and canoe is with a truck bed ladder rack. I recommend going with the Yakima OverHaul HD # Y01151-58 for a handful of reasons; it has crossbars which have a T-Slot in the top which is compatible with most roof mount accessories, the height is adjustable to fit your needs, and the legs are contoured at the top to match the style of your truck cab so it looks a little...

  • Solution to Carry Extra Long Hobie Outback Kayaks With the Yakima Rack N' Roll Trailer
Your best bet is to add the Tongue Extension Kit for Yakima Rack and Roll Trailer # Y08109 to your Rack N' Roll trailer which will increase the capacity from one 17' long or two 16'-long boats to one 22'-long boat or two 21'-long boats. The extra capacity added should allow you to carry your 2020 Hobie Outback without issues. As far as storage goes, you can simply just tilt the trailer back and store it in the upright position.

  • Is There A Longer Tongue Kit Available for the Malone MicroSport Trailer?
The tongue on the Malone Malone MicroSport Trailer # MPG460G is 8' by itself and can be shortened using the Retractable Tongue Kit for Malone MicroSport Trailers # MPG494, which will reduce the overall length of the trailer from 13' to 9', however there is not an option to make the tongue longer. • Will 2 Kayaks Fits on the Yakima Rack and Roll Trailer
The Yakima Rack and Roll trailer # Y08106 can hold 2 kayaks. If you are placing them directly on the bars as long as combined they are not more than 66 inches wide then they will fit directly on the bars. But what I recommend is to use the Thule Stacker, # TH830, on the trailer to hold the 2 Kayaks on their sides. This will ensure you have enough space for both kayaks. I have included a link to the installation details for the Stacker for you. I have also included a link to a video review...

  • Carrying an 18-1/2 Foot Canoe and Tandem Bike on a 2018 Toyota Highlander with Factory Roof Rack
There are canoe carriers that work with the bar spread of 27-1/2 inches on your 2018 Toyota Highlander. The Swagman Exo Aero # S65145 requires a minimum of 24 inches of bar spread. But I understand what you are saying. The canoe is so long you will need extra support. If your Highlander has a 2 inch trailer hitch or if you added one such as # e98844 you could then use a load extender such as the Yakima LongArm # Y01149 or Malone extender # MPG907. These will essentially add a third crossbar...

I recommend a couple sets of foam blocks, # RL100K10, because they are cost effective and they come with bow and stern tie downs to secure the kayaks to the trailer. One 17 foot boat is the maximum length for the Yakima Rack and Roll trailer # Y08107. I would try it out without an extension to see if there is going to be any issues. You will probably want to use a 17 foot long stand-in for the boat just in case when you test it out. If you do need the extension it is # Y08109.
