Video Transcript for Draw-Tite Front Mount Trailer Hitch Receiver Skid Shield Review

Hi there hard workers and off-roaders. Today we're going to be taking a look at Draw-Tite's skid shield for front mounted hitches. Now when you look at this, you might be wondering, well, what is it for I was wondering the same thing. When I hear skid plate, I was thinking something much larger, but this is really designed to protect your front mounted hitch and the area around the front of that hitch there on your vehicle. It's not necessarily designed as a complete brush guard, but it's for the receiver itself because if you don't have anything in your receiver, a lot of dirt and debris are eventually going to work their way in there. It also protects your receiver from low-lying objects that are on the road.

If the skid plate wasn't in place, it could bend or damage the metal and potentially cause it to bend or damage it in a way where you could no longer put things in the receiver without having to grind that out.If you we're to grind it out, you could also potentially lower the structural integrity of your hitch. So it's best just to protect it in the first place and prevent it from receiving any damage. So you can think of this as like a hitch cover for the front of your vehicle, but one that is significantly more robust. It's able to do that thanks to it's all steel construction, giving you a solid point of contact for whatever may hit it. To protect the skid plate, it has a black powder coat finish on it to prevent any rust and corrosion.

I also like the design of it. We've got a small flat area here in the front, which if we had any walls or surfaces there, this would contact first and it would give us that information. Once we would get that impact, it wouldn't hit our truck, but it would hit our skid plate here and on the inside we'd be able to react at that time.I also like that it has the 45 here, so on low lying objects if you hit it, especially if you're at any higher speed, the 45 degree angle would cause it to lift up a little bit on your truck and minimize the impact. When you have a straight impact it's going to be more force exerting at one time and this is going to allow the force to bounce off of each other, minimizing how much is going to bend or damage on the truck, if any at all since it's going to divert that force away. You can also use this to protect any front mounted accessories that you may have with the large opening we have here on this vehicle, a custom mounted bracket and winch could easily be installed right here and we don't want anything to come in contact with our winch, we would want to divert any force away from that.

This skid plate could protect those front mounted accessories. On some of your front mounted hitches, the hitch receiver is fairly well hidden and could potentially be in a location where we might have some contact when trying to put this in. I've got some measurements for you. You can see how close we are here on ours and one of the most important ones is from the center of our hitch pin hole to the furthest point which is going to measure about five and three quarter inches, this gives you an idea of the depth. From the center of the hitch pin hole to the closest point, it's going to be three and a quarter inches. The plate at the front is going to measure five inches wide by four and a quarter inch in height. When comparing the Draw-Tite to the Curt, they're going to have similar shape, size, and finishes.

So the only real difference is the Curt here does have an extra tie down point at the front, which I like to have if you've got that option. It's really not that useful unless you do have that over the cab ladder rack, but you just never know. It's secured to our receiver using a five eighths hitch pin and clip. One doesn't come included, but we have plenty available here at etrailer.com and that completes our look at Draw-Tite skid shield for front mounted hitches.

Love this! Effective, sturdy design. I have it on my front hitch. Effective keeping receptical free of debris as well. Ive been approached many times in conversation about its nice design and how it compliments my rig.

by:

Great protection from being rear ended. Very happy.

by:

Put a front receiver on my 2018 Frontier. Put this skid plate on to protect receiver when banging around off road. Looks better than empty receiver and plate is sturdy.

by:

As my front hitch is low to the ground I am using this as a skid plate to protect the hitch and its opening .

by:

Exactly as described. Durable. Best price I found for this anywhere reliable.

Ive used this a number of times to get pulled out and move trailers and it has worked great. Great build quality. 2002 Explorer Sport Trac

by:

It covers our front hitch perfectly. Prevents any damage to the receiver.

by:

Serves the purpose of covering the receiver hole, and would deflect a possible pan damaging debris item.
On reflecting, I should have just bought a cheap plastic hole cover.

by:

Has held up well. Coating has proven good as no rust one year later (as happens far too often with aftermarket parts). Still looks new one year later!

by:

Perfect. It’ll lemme know when I’m pushing the envelope and it’ll stop the whistle of the receiver when I hit 45-50mph.

  • What are the Dimensions of the Front Mount Trailer Hitch Receiver Skid Shield, # 6771
I went out to the warehouse and pulled the Front Mount Trailer Hitch Receiver Skid Shield, # 6771, to take some measurements. From the center of the hitch pin hole to the nearest part of the skid plate measures 3-1/4 inches. From the center of the hitch pin hole to the top of the skid plate is 5-3/4 inches. The overall width of the skid plate is 5 inches and the overall height is 4-1/4 inches.

  • Front Mount Trailer Hitch Receiver For a 2023 Ford F-150
While the Draw-Tite Front Mount Trailer Hitch Receiver # 65067 has not yet been confirmed to fit your 2023 Ford F-150, it is safe to say it will still fit as the only changes to the 2023 from 2022 is some trim level changes. I cannot say if the hitch will fit the Lightning as that is an all new truck and was never confirmed to fit on the 2022 model year of that truck. The Front Mount Trailer Hitch Receiver Skid Shield # 6771 will help prevent damage to the receiver tube when you do not...

  • What is the Front Mount Hitch Position When Curt Hitch 31432 is Installed on a 2010 Jeep Wrangler
I have seen the same thing on several jeeps. So I was looking at the directions, which I have attached below, for Curt front mount hitch, # 31432, to determine its position when installed on the vehicle. By looking at the instructions, it still is not too clear, though it appears as though the opening will be more or less flush with the center of the bumper. I spoke with my contact at Curt, the manufacturer, and they told me that the hitch arms mount above the bumper and the actual opening...

  • Can the Draw-Tite Front Hitch Receiver for a 2016 Ram 1500 Move 3,000 lb Boat Trailer
As long as the tongue weight of your 3,000 lb boat trailer doesn't exceed the 500 lb tongue weight rating of the Draw-Tite # 65062 then this will work great for your 2016 Ram 1500. I recommend using a cover like the Draw-Tite QSP # 63080 or Skid Shield # 6771 to help protect the front receiver when not in use. If you use the skid shield then I also recommend using a locking hitch pin like part # e98880 to help deter theft.

  • Ground Clearance Curt Front Hitch 31310 on 1996 Ford F-350
We haven't had the opportunity to obtain video footage of the # 31310 front mounted hitch install, but given the to-scale diagram I've provided from the installation instructions, once the hitch is installed the top of the receiver tube will sit about one inch below the underside of the bumper. This would put the underside of the receiver about 4 inches below the underside of the bumper. So, to see how much ground clearance you'll have just measure the distance from the underside of the...

  • Will Installing Front Mount Hitch On 2005 Ford F-150 STX 2WD Interfere With Transmission Cooler
No, installing the Draw-Tite Front Mount Trailer Hitch Receiver, part # 65043 or the Curt Front Mount Trailer Hitch Receiver, part # 31352 will not interfere with the OEM transmission cooler on your 2005 Ford F-150 STX. The only way that you transmission cooler would be affected is if you had something installed on the front-mount hitch that was directly blocking air flow to the transmission cooler. If you have an aftermarket transmission cooler, part # 65043 interfering with it would depend...

  • Is Fascia Trimming Required to Install a Front Mount Receiver on a 2005 Ford F-150 4x4
The Curt Front Mount Receiver, item # 31352, has a 9,000 Lbs. Max. Line Pull, and lower fascia trimming may be required on some models. The part that may need to be trimmed is the plastic fascia that is attached to the bottom of the chrome bumper on some models. If this plastic piece is not installed on your vehicle you will not have to trim with the Curt receiver. The Draw-Tite Front Receiver, item # 65043, for your 2005 F-150, has a 9,000 Lbs. Max. Line Pull rating also, so it is not...

  • Front Mount Receiver Hitch for 2020 Chevy Tahoe
As you mentioned, the Curt # C31073 and Draw-Tite # 65064 are the only front mounted receivers we offer for your 2020 Chevy Tahoe. Both hitches have the receiver located under the front bumper, which is necessitated by the way the vehicle front clip sits in relation to the frame members the hitches bolt onto. The way the vehicle is designed would prevent the receiver from sitting any higher on the front of the vehicle. If I had to choose between the two, I'd go with the Curt model, as...
