Video Transcript for Brake Buddy Stealth Supplemental Braking System Dual Controller Replacement Review

Hey everybody, Ryan here at etrailer. Today we're gonna be checking out the Brake Buddy Stealth Replacement Trailer Brake Controller. So there's a couple of reasons that I can think of why something like this would be a solution to your potential problem. This is designed to work with the Brake Buddy Stealth Supplemental Braking System. So, the one that you use to flat tow a vehicle. And this is the brake controller that, the only one that's gonna work with that said braking system.

So let's say maybe your vehicle is rigged up with that braking system already, and your motorhome had this one, this brake controller in it already. Maybe you decided to upgrade motorhomes, right Get a new one. Don't feel like bothering with ripping this out and transferring it over. So that's one reason, you know. You could just pick up this, since the car side is already set up, hook this up into your new motorhome and call it a day.

Other reason being, maybe the one that you already have set up got damaged, broke, whatever the case may be, it no longer works and you need a replacement. That's where this one is going to come into play. Chances are pretty good if you're watching this, you're already somewhat familiar with how this is gonna work but we'll just kind of run through some of the basics. So this is what you're gonna use when you're flat towing your vehicle behind the motorhome. And this is gonna act as just a regular trailer brake controller, too, proportional type trailer brake controller.

So you know, you're gonna have two different modes here. Right now I'm just hooked up to a trailer. We don't have our flat tow vehicle with us. So I clicked it onto the trailer setting there and that'll work out real well if maybe sometimes you pull four-wheelers or dirt bikes, or you know, other recreational toys, and not your vehicle behind you, this'll work out real well. (system whirring) You know, it'll be able to apply the brakes on the trailer and slow it down.

(system whirring) And what I'm pushing here is a manual override. So this is gonna apply just the trailer brakes. You'll use that in the event of a sway type situation. Trailer kind of starts getting away from you. (system whirring) You can hit that, slow it down and get it back under control. Whenever you're flat towing, change it over to the vehicle side and whenever you hit the brakes in there, this is going to, you know, essentially tell the vehicle to apply its brakes and slow you down. So, pretty straightforward. You know, there's different types of settings and aggressiveness that you can change. You know, you can crank up the power output back to the brakes and really fine tune everything, so to speak. So you know, maybe if your trailer is light and you're going to pick something up, you can turn that power down. Whenever you put whatever's going in it, in it or on it, you can turn it up. You know, and same thing with your vehicle, you know You can really fine tune it if, maybe if you're in really hilly areas, you can crank it up. Crank that power up if you're, you know, through the flatlands and you can turn it down. You don't need all that braking power. And it's also gonna alert you kind of what's going on. So right now, like I said, we're just hooked up to a trailer. So if you put it on the vehicle side, we're gonna get an SC, which is a short circuit, but it's just because we have it on, you know, we have it on the car side when we're hooked up to a trailer, it's not set up for that. (system whirring) But yeah, whenever you hit the brakes it'll give you your output. Whenever you're hooked up to your car and hit the brakes, it'll come up with a BB, telling you that the brakes are applying. And there's some other indicators as well. Letting you know if, you know, you have a breakaway situation or any other errors happening in the system, it'll display all those. But other than that, you know, if you need a brake controller to work with the Brake Buddy Stealth Supplemental Braking System, this is the only one that's gonna work with it. It's specifically designed for that unit and if that's what you're trying to do, you can't just grab a regular off-the-shelf brake controller and expect it to work with that supplemental braking system. So if you're in that situation, this one's definitely gonna get the job done, and not really a whole lot more to it. You know, honestly. In terms of getting it hooked up, it's really just gonna depend on your motorhome. You know, some of 'em are really easy, like our Ford Chassis here, a lot of the Ford Chassis actually have a trailer brake controller plug under the dash and you can pick up an adapter and just cut it, you know, splice it right into this and then plug it right in to that OEM trailer brake controller plug. It's really straightforward. A lot of the other big manufacturers have something very similar to that, another type of plug where you can use an adapter. So you have to check with the manufacturer, look under the dash and try to locate one of those plugs. If it doesn't have that, then it's definitely a little bit more work to get set up on the motorhome. You know, if you don't have everything routed already, the etrailer Universal Brake Controller Install Kit would definitely get you going in the right direction. You'll probably have to get some more wire, depending on the length of your motorhome. So it's just gonna vary. But you know, with that said, I think that'll about do it. And that'll finish up our look at of the Brake Buddy Stealth Replacement Trailer Brake Controller.

  • Troubleshooting Brake Buddy Stealth Controller that Backfeeds Voltage on Brake Lights When Stopped
Yes, it would be time for a new controller part # HM39533 for your Brake Buddy. Unfortunately the controllers of this kit aren't as reliable as we'd like them to be and what you described does sound like an internal problem with it. There is a chance there is a short between the black wire and the red wire though so I would check the connections there to see if you can find a short like cut/exposed wire and fix as needed.

You are correct the Brake Buddy Stealth Supplemental Braking System part # HM39530 needs to be wired to the positive terminal of the vehicle's battery. If you are not using the brake controller and the vehicle is not being towed the dust cover must be inserted into the vehicle's harness. Once it's been inserted for 3 minutes the controller will turn off and will no longer engage the vehicle's brakes.

  • Can Redarc Brake Controller Be Used With Brake Buddy Stealth Flat Tow Braking System
The brake controller that comes with the Brake Buddy Stealth Supplemental Braking System # HM39530 is proprietary. This controller is actually modeled after the Hopkins Agility Trailer Brake Controller # HM47295 and I've asked Brake Buddy if the Agility can be used as a replacement and they said that the flat-tow profile used with the Brake Buddy Controller # HM39533 is different than a regular electric brake controller so the one that comes with the Stealth HAS to be used with that system.
