Radial Tires vs. Bias Tires

Radial tire vs bias tire graphic

Radial ply tires are designed for trailers that are towed on the highway. The cords on a radial tire are positioned at a 90-degree angle to the direction of travel so that they lay across the width of the tire from wheel lip to wheel lip. This construction prevents the cords from rubbing against one another when the tire flexes, unlike the cords on a bias ply tire. As a result, radial tires have less rolling resistance and heat buildup, which leads to a longer tread life and improved steering at higher speeds.

I would not recommend these tires to anybody! I bought four of them for my boat trailer, mounted on galvanized spoke rims, and in less than 5000 miles of use, two of the four failed. They were balanced, maintained at 65# pressure, never driven over 63 MPH, and considerably oversized for the load being carried. Both tires suffered internal cord separation and went out of round, with "wiggley" tread. Fortunately I discovered both problems before blowouts. The one tire ordered here was a replacement for the first failure, and before I figured out the tire design is faulty. No longer trusting these tires, I got rid of all of them after 5K miles, and replaced them with Goodyear Endurance trailer tires, made in the USA! So far, under same use, no problems at all.

Disclaimer - I have no tire company affiliation whatsoever.

Mounted and balanced just have to put on the camper

by:

So far so good. Just finished restoration and still waiting to put these tires down on the open road. Gotta say, they look good.

by:

Looks good, well made. Just received them. Will see when mounted to my camper!!!

I haven't mounted them yet, but they look like a quality tire. FAST service !

HAVE LIKED ALL MY TRANSACTION'S WITH E-TRAILER. NO PROBLEM'S AND HANDLED IN A TIMELY MANNER.

by:

Good looking tire. And Kenda is a name you can trust. Especially if you are needing a good quality tire for an affordable price.

by:

This is the second set of this brand tire I have purchased for our enclosed trailer, The original set was great and never had the first problem out of them, Only replaced them as they were 10 years old and feel better with a new set as we travel long distances pulling classic cars. E Trailer had them in stock and Jessica was very knowledgeable and the order arrived in a few days.

by:

Ms paula thank u so much 4 all ur help with my new trailer tires it allways good to b able to talk to i live person 4 help when u need it .

by:

Great quality tire at a good price and it arrived quickly.

by:

Great price for a great tire. I bought these to put on my equipment trailer that was in need of some new tires. These were the wright choice in tires for me. They have held up very well without any issues. Would highly recommend these tires if you need a great heavy duty tire.

They are still doing great. Use the trailer there on quite often to haul lumber, tractor and vehicles on it. Do love them and they are holding up well.

by:

We bought tires for our 2005 camper. Purchasing was easy and delivery was fast. Thank you for a great purchase.

by:

Shipping was very good with each tire in separate box. I have not installed these yet. The tires look to be very high quality as I have used this brand and size on two trailers. over the past 10 years, a six wheel Avion Travel Trailer and a four wheel Featherlite 25 ft enclosed car hauler.

On my last order about a year ago, I ordered four with the white spoke wheel. Two balanced OK but two different shops could only balance with an excess number of weights. I have the original Featherlite wheels in storage. I am going to install these tires on the original wheels to see if the problem is in the wheels or tires. These tires look very rugged and high quality, so I suspect the problem was the center hole in the wheels causing imbalance from the balance machine.

The four tires and white spoke wheels I bought in 2012 balanced excellently with very small weights. Those 2012 tires will go on the Avion travel trailer set up permanently at a campground. They still look very good with no weather checking, and will replace really old tires that are on the Avion.

I am installing the new tires on the Featherlite enclosed 25 ft for highway safety, but I want them to balance well. I plan to carry a lot of sensitive electronics and tools and I want the trailer to ride smoothly.

I have always been impressed with e-trailer.com so I am still rating this company and these Kenda tires 5 stars.

by:

After installing our new Kenda Karrier Radial Tires we have traveled 7500 miles and they are doing great. The wear is very even across all four tires.
I would purchase them again.

by:

I ordered this product and then was notified it was late coming in and could be a week late. Etrailer sent me a email telling me the tire was going to be late. I was really worried, because I was needing the tire ASAP for my trip.
Within two days after I saw the tire was shipped, it was at my front door.

I have order products from Etrailer before and have always had a good experience. This was terrific, because it got her in time for me to get it placed on my rim and ready for my trip.

Thanks Etrailer!

by:

Great tires, customer service, and I got them promptly.

by:

They were delivered in 3 days. Had to wait on one a day or two.

Doing well.

by:

This place is great. Chris was a huge help figuring out what I needed for my vintage camper. Wheels tires and baby moon caps all fit and work perfectly. Thanx!

by:

Customer service was excellent. Tires arrived boxed separately and on time.
Tires were mounted in preparation for a trip. Too soon to evaluate tires.

by:

I just received and installed these tires on 2 different trailers, so haven't used them enough to warrant a review. They arrived in great shape, and I will write a review later in the year after i've used them a while.

by:

Good looking and better tires than the factory tires that came with my RV

by:

ON time and as described. I have been purchasing form etrailer.com for over 10 years.. Great Service

by:

To date I have had no problems. I like tread pattern. It is used on my dump trailer.

  • Can Trailer Have Different Ply Tires
It is strongly recommended that you replace your trailer tires so that they are all the same size and load range; so while you can have trailer tires that have different plies, a trailer's ply is tied into its load range. Tires that are the same size but a different load range will be inflated to different psi's, and this will cause your trailer to track unevenly and cause suspension problems that are going to be more expensive than four new tires. For example, if you needed a 225-75/15...

  • How to Determine Wheel Width for Fitment of Karrier ST225/75R15 Radial Trailer Tire
Most wheels will have their size stamped on the back (inward facing) side. The Karrier ST225/75R15 Radial Trailer Tire # AM10256 does fit 15" x 6", 15" x 6-1/2", and 15" x 7" wheels so if your wheel is stamped as 15" x 6" it will still fit. If you don't have the size stamped on the wheel you can measure the width of the wheel which is taken from bead seat to bead seat (see attached photo). If you aren't able to remove the tire first then you can try sticking a ruler through the pilot hole...

  • Valve Stems for Dexstar Vintage Wheel
Yes, the Dexstar Vintage Steel Wheel item # AM20395 you purchased is tubeless. I recommend the Americana Rubber, Snap-In Valve Stem item # AM20903. This Snap-in, rubber valve stem is 1-1/4" long and fits through 0.453" diameter rim holes on trailer wheels. They are sold individually. If you still need tires for your new rims I recommend the Karrier ST225/75R15 Radial Trailer Tire item # AM10256.

  • Will a 225/75-15 Trailer Tire # AM10256 Fit on a 15 Inch by 7 inch Wheel
I spoke with our resident tire expert and he said that a 225/75-15 tire like # AM10256 will fit on a 15 x 7 inch wheel. However, he added that on a trailer, you do not often see a 15 x 7 inch wheel. That is because for trailer use, you would want to keep it more narrow. Otherwise the sidewalls can bow out more. This can be a problem because trailer tires have a thicker sidewall and if bowed out more than normal it can build up more heat faster and lead to short life or failure. Another...

What you have is a 3,500 lb hub that needs to be replaced with something like the # 84546UC3. This hub will fit your current trailer based on the bearing numbers you listed. You can use the # XLPROLUBE1980KIT with this hub to convert the setup to an oil bath type hub if you like though. This kit comes with seals and cap adapters so that oil can be used instead of grease.

  • Comparing F78-15ST and ST225/75-15 Trailer Tires
The F78-15ST is a very old tire size which is no longer made. The modern equivalent of this size is a ST205/75-15. For this, I recommend the Karrier ST205/75R15 Radial Trailer Tire part # AM10244. If you wanted to jump up to a ST225/75-15 you could but it would be a little over an inch larger in diameter and a little over half an inch in width, the Karrier ST225/75R15 Radial Trailer Tire part # AM10256 is what I recommend.

  • Can 225/75-15 Bias Trailer Tires be Changed to Radial Trailer Tires
Not only can you change from bias trailer tires to radial trailer tires but I highly recommend doing so. The reason is that radial tires flex more and give you much better contact with the ground and also run cooler to help prevent blowouts. Bias tires are stiffer and really only good for agricultural or heavy off-road use. The ST225/75R15 radial trailer tires I highly recommend are the Kenda Karrier because they combine value and performance. The only thing you need to determine is the...

You do need to make sure you have enough clearance in between your fender and frame rail for the wider 8.9" 225/75-15 tire; your current tire is 7.8" wide. • What Size Trailer Rim Should be Used for a 205/75-15 Trailer Tire
For a trailer tire, the narrowest option rim for any given tire is going to be the best option. For a 205/75-15, the best option would be a 5 inch rim. The reason that narrower is better is because it provides more support for the tire. Since trailer tires handle more vertical load, the narrow wheel that offers more support is ideal. A wider rim can still be used but you will not get as much support and you may run into interference issues even though the width difference overall with...

The tire has a 2830 lb capacity when properly inflated to 80psi. The tire is intended for use on 15x6, 15x6-1/2 or 15x7 inch rims. Hopefully the rim you have is a trailer rim and not one designed for a passenger vehicle. The reason I mention that is the tire size you listed isn't a standard trailer tire size.
