Radial Tires vs. Bias Tires

Radial tire vs bias tire graphic

Radial ply tires are designed for trailers that are towed on the highway. The cords on a radial tire are positioned at a 90-degree angle to the direction of travel so that they lay across the width of the tire from wheel lip to wheel lip. This construction prevents the cords from rubbing against one another when the tire flexes, unlike the cords on a bias ply tire. As a result, radial tires have less rolling resistance and heat buildup, which leads to a longer tread life and improved steering at higher speeds.

This site was very easy to order from. The product came quickly and on the day promised. Also free shipping is always a plus! I will definitely order from etrailer again!

by:

The online information on how to determine bolt pattern and measure a wheel was very useful to help me determine what size tire to order, since I was planning to use some rims I already owned. Once ordered, the 2 trailer tires arrived quickly, but a day apart (?). I had them mounted on my rims, balanced, and then swapped them out with the old wheels. No installation problems, and the trailer pulls nicely as always. Now we shall see how the tires wear over time.

by:

I recieved my tires and wheels yesterday. I was in need of these quickly since I was leaving on a trip the same week. Dana M. at etrailer hooked me up with the right tires and wheels for my trailer and the shipping was as promised. Thank you guys for a great transaction. I would definitely buy again.

by:

They've worked fine for me.

by:

I need to mount and balance these but they look like good tires. The sidewall is thinner due to the "C" load range but that should be fine and hopefully they are very durable.

by:

Have always been satisfied with all the tire products that I have purchased through etrailer and there is no issue with the actual product this time BUT I am a bit disappointed that the brand new tire arrived with a manufacturer date of Mid July 2021.....9/10 months old already.

by:

Its a trailer tire, what's to say? Time and milage will tell, then I'll review as to durability and endurance. I received it in only 3 days which is amazing, and what arrived was just what was ordered; as always with etrailer. Great service, good products, fair prices.

by:

Product was received quickly and fit great! I would use etrailer.com again.

by:

A great tire for your travel trailer. I ordered one for a spare.

In our fast paced world where customer service seems to be a thing of the past, I am always amazed when shopping on etrailer. Prompt service, fast shipping and people who actually follow-up to ensure that you are satisfied!

This should be your one stop location for trailer parts.

by:

Very fast shipping. The tires are excellent quality and big upgrade from the load range B bias ply I had previously.

by:

I actually bought 3 of theses and wheels for an overlanding trailer I built from a CE Smith boat trailer and other parts I bought from etrailer. I am happy with these tires and wheels as well as the trailer and other parts.

by:

Exactly what I needed to match existing tires

by:

Great service and fast shipping (free too) I bought a set of these mounted and bought this one for a spare. Chose these mostly for the load and speed rating as I use my trailer primarily on the hiway.

by:

Great wheel and tire, I was due for an upgrade on my enclosed trailer, delivery was super fast. I upgraded to these load D rated tires over my old load C. Great service from etrailer

by:

Unfortunately these only lasted 2 years and less than 8,000 miles before the belts "slipped" and the tires ballooned and got tall and round. I pull a 10k GVWR two-axle toy hauler weighed at 7800 lbs on the axles. These survived two 2600 mile trips and a few shorter trips at up to 65 mph. 3 of 4 tires ballooned and I replaced them before they blew. I filed a Kenda warranty claim and they denied that they could see anything wrong in the pictures. etrailer said Kenda handles warranty claims for these.

by:

One year review. We moved from Seattle, WA to Athens, GA. Just short of 3000 miles. These were on an overloaded boat trailer. I was happy for the extra load capacity and nice big tires. Ride smooth and no sway, which my wife was happy about. One less thing to worry about. I also have Karriers on my utility trailer. Good tires and value.

by:

Purchased to replace original bias ply tires that were ten years old. Rides as well as original tires. Maybe a little less bouncing when empty. I think the tires look nicer as well. Used the original rims. If the trailer lasts long enough I would use these tires again.

by:

The tires came quickly and and good condition. What more can you ask? Haven't mounted yet though.

This is my second set of Karrier ST205/75R/14 TRAILER TIRES.Great tires and fast shipping. Balanced tires and pulled my camper many miles with no problems..

  • Does The HWT Aluminum Hi-Spec Series 6 Trailer Wheel # AM22651 Have a Maximum Pressure Rating?
The HWT Aluminum Hi-Spec Series 6 Trailer Wheel # AM22651 while having a maximum weight capacity of 2,150lbs, does not have a maximum pressure rating. The tire pressure rating is going to be supplied by the tire manufacturer. The Karrier ST225/75R15 Radial Trailer Tire Range C # AM10251 which fits the wheel you found has the same 2,150lb weight capacity. The manufacturer calls for a tire pressure of 50psi for this particular tire. You always want to use the tire manufacturers pressure...

  • Can Different Brand Trailer Tire Size ST225/75R15 be Ran on a Trailer
Having two different brand trailer tires of the same size is not a problem at all. Most likely the tire is a Load Range C like the part # AM10251 which has a capacity of 2,150 lbs at 50 psi. Just be sure to keep all of the tires inflated to the max PSI rating listed on the tire and you'll be fine.

  • Can a 215/75-15 Tire Replace a 225/75-15 Tire
A 215/75-15 tire will fit a 15 inch rim and has a rim width range of 5-1/2 to 7-1/2 inches. A 225/75-15 tire also fits a 15 inch rim and has a rim width range of 5 to 7 inches. Assuming the width of your 15 inch rim is within the 5-1/2 to 7-1/2 inch range of the 215/75-15 tire you will be able to substitute it. Keep in mind, the 215/75-15 is not a common trailer size so you want to make sure it is designed to be used with your trailer. I would look to see if the tire has ST on it for...

  • What Size Wheel Will 215/75-15 Tire Fit On
Based on my research, it looks like a 215/75-15 tire will fit 15 inch wheels that feature a width of 5-1/2 to 7-1/2 inches. With that in mind, a 215/75-15 is not a common trailer tire size so I recommend verifying that your existing tires are designed to be used on your utility trailer. Trailer tires are built with thicker/stronger sidewalls so they can handle the heavy weights of a fully loaded trailer. • Recommendation for ST225/75D15 Trailer Tires for Long Distance Trip
Almost no tires are made in the US anymore. Tires made overseas still have to meet DOT regulations for use in the US though. In size ST225/75-15 I recommend radial tires since you are traveling long distance. Radial tires track better and run cooler than bias ply tires. For a load range C, rated for 2,150 pounds at 50 psi, use # AM10251. For a load range D, rated for 2,540 pounds at 65 psi use # TTWTRTM2257515D. And for a load range E, rated for 2,830 pounds at 80 psi use # AM10303.

  • Recommended Tires for a 5x10 Trailer with 3,500 Lb Axle
The number of plies a tire has no longer has a direct correlation to the weight capacity of a tire as manufacturers have begun to use stronger material which means fewer plies and a higher weight capacity. The figure that is now used instead of plies is load range. The load range of all tires will need to exceed the gross trailer weight (GTW) of the trailer. • Can ST205/75R15 Trailer Tires be Replaced With ST225/75R15 Trailer Tires on Grey Wolf 29TE
You can, assuming you have the proper clearance; with trailer tires, the general rule of thumb is you want at least 3" of clearance from the top of the tire to your fender and at least 1" of clearance between the inside of the tire and your trailer's frame rail. ST205/75R15 measure 27.1" in diameter and 8.1" wide, while ST225/75R15 tires measure 28.3" in diameter and 8.9" wide, so you'll only be adding about 5/8" of height and 3/8" of width near the frame rail. • What Load Range Tire is Needed for a 10,000 lb Trailer
Load range capacity varies based on the tire size and brand, so without knowing either, it's hard to say. So, in this case, the load range C tire has a greater capacity than the load range D tire. It's best to check the weight capacity of an individual tire to make sure the load range will be sufficient. Remember to also check the distance between both tires as this will decrease by 1-1/2". The width of the tire is going to only increase just under 1/2". So an additional 1/4" on each side of the tire. If these all work for your clearances than the next step is the load range. There are 3 load ranges available...

The D14 will not fit your wheel if you currently have an R15 tire. That means your wheel is a 15 inch wheel and a D14 or R14 tire will fit a 14 inch wheel. The difference between a bias ply and a radial tire is the way the rubber is layered. A bias ply is layered around the tire, and a radial tire is layered from sidewall to sidewall with steel belting. A radial tire will be more stable and will yield better ride quality. Currently we do not have a 215/75-15 size tire. We do have a 225/75-15...
