Create a stable ride for your tow vehicle and trailer with a weight distribution hitch. Adding spring bars to your towing system applies leverage, which transfers the load that is pushing down on the rear of your vehicle to all the axles on both your tow vehicle and your trailer, resulting in an even distribution of weight throughout. The result is a smooth, level ride, as well as the ability to tow the maximum capacity of your hitch.

Selecting a Weight Distribution System

The tongue weight rating is the most important factor in determining which size weight distribution system you should use. If the bars of the system you choose are rated too high for your setup, they will create a rigid ride, which can result in a bouncing trailer. If, on the other hand, the bars are not rated high enough, the system will be unable to properly distribute the weight, rendering it virtually useless.

To determine the proper weight rating for a weight distribution system, you must first determine your trailer's tongue weight. Then add to that the weight of the cargo behind the rear axle of your tow vehicle. These two measurements make up the tongue weight rating for a weight distribution system.

Unique Features of Blue Ox SwayPro

Blue Ox SwayPro Rotating Latch Brackets

Other weight distribution systems have lift brackets that require you to apply a good amount of leverage to get them to snap up, which can be difficult and frustrating. With the SwayPro, all you have to do is insert the lift chain into the bracket slot and rotate the bracket with the included wrench until the lock pin engages.

Another feature of the SwayPro is the easy-to-use head. The required pitch is already built into the head, so the only adjustment that may be needed is the placement of the head on the shank. Move the head up or down along the weight distribution shank to achieve the proper height. No additional, fine-tune adjustment is needed, which means no hard-to-access washers or difficult-to-use thumbscrew.

Built-In Tension Stops Sway

Blue Ox SwayPro System with Built-In Sway Control Hooked Up

The SwayPro offers four points of built-in sway control. Within the head assembly, the trunnions are designed to hold the spring bars securely in position, placing just enough tension on them to cause them to constantly force your trailer in line. At the other end of this weight distribution system, the rotating brackets ensure that the lift chains are pulled as taut as possible. In addition, the basic design of the brackets keeps much of the length of the lift chains wrapped up inside of the brackets. Typically, only a couple of links hang down from each bracket. So each chain is held more stable than in traditional weight distribution systems, where more than twice as many links are exposed. This tight, stable design limits the movement of the spring bars so that they can exert more force on your trailer to effectively keep it from shifting side to side. Furthermore, unlike many friction-style sway controls, the SwayPro allows you to back up your trailer without having to remove or disengage the system.

The sway bar is awesome and it works great. I gave it a 4 star because I’m somewhat disappointed with how the racket assembly mounted to my RV is rusting. The powder coating did not hold up. I do not live in a salt environment.

Functionally great! I’m very disappointed with the paintprotective coating. Had to sand everything and repaint because the original coating rusted. Not sure why, I do not live on the coast salt water. Maybe a mid que on prep before powder coating. I can send pics, but pretty you won’t really care.

I have been using the Blue Ox SwayPro WD Hitch for 1,500 tongue weight on our 30' Arctic Fox travel trailer for one year now. No regrets as this hitch has been an easy to setup and use and it seems to do it's job nicely. Due to the height of our trailer's hitch I ordered a Reese Titan Weight Dist Shank to use with the SwayPro and the pair work great together.

by:

The Blue OX weight distribution hitch is the way to go. With the sway control built in it makes the system more manageable and easy to use. The bars are straight instead of an L for easier storage and the chain tensioner is much easier to load then the typical system that requires going over a high center. I bolted the tensioners to my frame but the standard mount works fine.

The Blue Ox SwayPro 1500 arrived today. Ordered online from eTrailer on Tuesday and delivered to West Michigan on Friday. FAST! etrailer service and support is always First Class. While heavy, the Blue Ox WDH was in perfect condition. The quality and appearance of the Clue Ox is great. The hitch is powder coated and very clean. I was impressed that Blue Ox has totally upgraded the chain latch wrench. No longer that flat piece of metal. The new wrench is a plated, heavy duty socket wrench. Much like a wheel lug nut wrench that is made especially for releasing the latches. Our new TT was delivered to our dealer while our state is in lockdown. There it sits until May 1. I will update review after install and first trip.
With all the changes in the world... very happy to purchase a product Made in U.S.A.

by:

The hitch came very quickly and was well packaged. I was surprised to find an upgraded chain tool and 20k lbs ball already attached to the hitch. The reason I have four stars was there was not option to select a longer shank length. So, $[XX] dollars later I was able to get an extended shank for my 3/4 ton truck.

by:

Packaging was terrible! Paint is beat off of it so bad it looks several years old! Missing parts, one lock washer and no hitch pin!

I am so sorry to hear that! I will have our customer service team reach out to you about this.

Hitch was very easy to setup, good instructions. Could use a couple pictures.
Towing a 20’ enclosed car trailer, feels like I’m pulling a smaller / lighter trailer.

by:

The blue ox pro weight distribution looks extremely well built. However, When I ordered the kit, I believe it said it did not come with a ball. So I ordered a ball. I now have an extra ball that I don't need. UPS delivered the box and the box was crushed, two holes punctured into the box. Fortunately for me, all the pieces were still in the box. Past that, I'm excited to pull my trailer and see how it does.

After a year, the hitch assembly is incredible. You dont know how well it is constructed until you see other hitches and the thin material used. I would buy again in a heart beat.

by:

Have only used it to drive 15 miles from my trailer dealer to home, but I think I'm going to like this WDH. It seems to do the job, is relatively easy to use. The dealer I bought my trailer from mounted it for me, they'd done many before so it went quickly.
Some hints I'd learned from them and discussion forums - use the trailer jack to lift the front of the trailer/back of the truck to make it easier and safer to install or remove the chains. Use a long breaker bar with a 1" socket for the same reason - the extra leverage over that with the tool supplied with the hitch helps. I painted the chain link on each side that the dealer hooked to so I could get the tension back the way they had it. Will have to see how that works out in the long run, may have to adjust up or down.
FWIW, I measured the distance from the ground to the top of the front and rear fender wells on my truck before and after hooking up the trailer with the BO Sway Pro. The front ended up exactly where it was before, the rear dropped only one inch with 1000 lbs of hitch weight. I'd say the WDH is doing its job!

Ive replaced the 1 socket with a 26mm socket, as it fits better. Only snag we are running into is that the u-bolts that hold the chains to the arms are being bent and worn down from occasional ground scrapes. Ive purchased a pair of the little u-bolts and four self locking nuts from e-trailer, so Ill be prepared if they ever do rub or break off completely.

by:

Haven't used this yet but I think it will do the job. Customer service has been great! UPS got really ruff with the package and a key element was ejected along the way. etrailer was quick to resolve the issue and shipped the missing part immediately. Great service! Thanks until the next order!

by:

This is our second Blue Ox system, and we love it. It really holds the trailer tight behind the truck. The service from etrailer was outstanding - I had an issue with my order (part my fault and part theirs) and they resolved it quickly and efficiently. They are so knowledgeable!

by:

I have both an Equalizer and this Blue Ox hitch. I purchased the Blue Ox after I complained of a poor ride with my travel trailer to the dealer. They recommended Blue Ox instead. Frankly it didn't improve the ride at all. Worse, the bars hung so low that they scraped on every speed bump. However this was exacerbated by the way I had to set it up to make the ride at least tolerable. I have now changed travel trailers and tried both hitches on the new one. The new travel trailer sits significantly higher and rides much better. I don't have the problem of the bars hitting the ground. The ride also seems much better then when I use the Equalizer. The final problem I have with this hitch is the that saddle that holds the chains seems to stick very frequently and requires that I release the pin and force it to release the chain with the provided wrench - resulting in frequent minor injuries. Not sure why this happens but I'm getting better at forcing the release with no injuries. Just irritating.

by:

No matter what product you end up buying from etrailer your going to be impressed by their customer service. I purchased the SwayPro Blue Ox BXW1500 for towing a trailer with 1000lbs of tongue weight when empty using a 2018 Nissan Titan. I have never been able to actually level my pickup before with other hitches that I’ve used. I can now level the pickup and trailer to within 1/2”. The BXW1500 was very easy to install. Hookup is simple and easy. When towing the hitch works silently and offers very good vehicle control. The parts of the hitch that you handle have no grease on them. I would recommend theBXW1500 for anyone experiencing truck squat while towing or is tired of a noisy hitch system.

by:

I ordered the Blue OX BXW1500. Installation was easy, I will be testing it next week for the first time. etrailer's customer service was wonderful. I worked with Sarah, she was a wonderful help. After ordering the hitch, I found it for a lower price. etrailer refunded the difference plus another 10% of the difference with no questions asked. I highly recommend etrailer for all your camping needs.

Thanks
Jason

Best weight distribution solution on the market, in my opinion. I have owned a Blue Ox system for many years and haven't had an issue yet - been all over the country and have towed in many different conditions. I have owned other systems (friction based - way too noisy/loud)... this system does its job and does it quietly!! highly recommend Blue Ox!

by:

This W/D hitch does everything it is supposed to do. It was very easy to set up and my new trailer tows like a dream. Just a hint-- I mark the chains with some paint so I know where to set them.

After one year the hitch still is working great! I did some minor chain adjustments to my original setup and it works better now I went one link tighter

by:

I've driven over 11,000 miles this year, through snow, rain, and gusty winds and have no troubles with this hitch system. Just love it. The finish has chipped off, and in those areas, rust is developing. Otherwise a very good product.

Hi Douglas, Thanks for your feedback! With the powder coating being chipped off, I would recommend cleaning the rust off and applying a rust resistant paint to the bare metal. This will help prevent the rust from spreading. I have attached a helpful article that goes into better detail.

by:

Installation was easy trailer handles wonderful with this setup. Always been a believer in the Blue Ox equalizer hitch and integrated sway control.

by:

Produce is very well designed and good quality. Easy to install

by:

First I have to recognize and thank the excellent etrailer customer service. The etrailer team contacted me immediately to address an order issue, and did so quickly. The BXW1500 arrived in a timely manner, and the only issue was the shipping/handling by UPS. The box was rather beat-up, and the chains were hanging out, but all of the product was intact and we had no issue with install.

The ride is significantly better than the previous hitch from the dealer (R3 Recurve), and I have noted improved distribution across the axles at the scales. Previous setup was a lesser bar rating, and we determined the tongue weight and cargo was at the higher end of the bar. As such, we chose the 1500 lb TW bars.

The BXW1500 material and build quality is quite impressive, particularly in comparison to the previous hitch.

Vehicle and trailer is: 2015 Silverado 1500 with Max-Trailering Package and a 2020 GD Imagine 2800BH.

by:

I replaced a broken old Eaz-lift hitch with this one on a 10k cargo trailer. The difference in ride quality is night and day. Well worth the step up in price. I feel like I'm driving a Cadillac compared to before. Set-up was easy, instructions were clear and concise. I greatly enjoyed not having to set the angle as it is built in. (Less to adjust, less that can go wrong/break).

I do a lot of backing up at sharp angles as I use my trailer for food deliveries in tight spaces behind small restaurants/stores. I've not had any issues with this hitch while doing so. My load weights also vary greatly from beginning to end of day (full vs. empty). It is as smooth empty as it is full. The bars have a broad tongue weight rating range which works great for my application!

I've not had it long enough to comment on long-term durability, but it is built tough and engineered smart. I expect it to last as long as I do. You get what you pay for. Great product!

by:

Wish i had gone with the equalizer. Too many busted knuckles releasing the tension off the bars.

Etrailer Expert

Heather A.

3/6/2018

Daniel, Thank you for your review. The easiest way to take the tension out of the spring bar is to raise the trailer with the trailer jack. Raise the trailer and the back of the tow vehicle until the tension is reduced. This will allow the bars to be removed.

by:

HIGHLY RECOMMEND THE BLUE OX SWAY PRO!!!!! SUPER FAST EASY INSTALLATION & SET-UP. HOOK-UP & DISCONNECT TO TRAILER ARE A BREEZE. RELIEVE TENSION ON TORSION BARS A MUST WHEN CONNECTING & DISCONNECTING. TOP QUALITY CONSTRUCTION, MADE IN THE USA!!!! NEVER TOWED BETTER THAN WITH THE BLUE OX. THANKS E-TRAILER FOR SELLING SUCH GREAT PRODUCTS AT SUCH GREAT PRICES.

by:

We were very lucky all the parts were in the box.

by:

For Etrailer, A+ for excellent customer service as usual! Shipping was very quick. Regarding the hitch, I think this one is going to be a real winner. Installation was quick and easy. Anyone with basic tools can easily install and setup this hitch. The only thing most people won't have is the 1 7/8" socket needed to tighten the nut that secures the ball to the hitch itself. You'd also need a torque wrench or impact wrench that can achieve [specs]. Instead, I just took it to a local shop. It took them two minutes and they didn't even charge me.

After installing and setting up the hitch, I took measurements of the height of the truck's front fender both hitched and unhitched. It was exactly the same, which as I understand is ideal. Without any weight distribution, the front of the truck rises about 1/2" when you drop the trailer on the ball.

I haven't towed with the new setup yet, but I expect it to do really well based on what I'm seeing so far. I'll come back and update after my first trip next week.

I would be happy to help. It sounds like your Blue Ox SwapPro Weight Distribution System # BXW1000 may not be set up correctly causing it not to distribute weight properly. First things first with your Ford Expedition and trailer parked on level ground you will want to disconnect the trailer from the vehicle and level it using the trailer jack. With the trailer level measure from the ground to the bottom of the trailer coupler. Now measure from the ground to the top of the hitch ball...

  • Recommended Trailer Hitch Receiver And Weight Distribution Hitch For 2018 Ram 2500
I would be happy to help. Starting with the trailer hitch receiver I recommend the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver - Custom Fit - Class V XD - 2" # C15409 which is confirmed to fit your 2018 Ram 2500 Limited, and has a maximum tongue weight rating of 2550lbs and trailer weight rating of 17000lbs when not using a weight distribution hitch, or 2550lbs tongue weight and 25000lbs trailer weight if you are using a weight distribution hitch like you mentioned you were wanting. Keep in mind that...

  • Chain Adjustments on Blue Ox SwayPro Weight Distribution System
If your truck and trailer look to be level when adjusting to the 8th chain link with the Blue Ox SwayPro Weight Distribution System # BXW1500 then this isn't a problem. I recommend also taking the trailer out for a short test drive to see how everything handles with the current setup and if needed the chains can always be adjusted one way or another down the line. I have attached a short video demonstration on this system that you can check out as well.

  • Recommended Weight Distribution With Sway Control For 2021 Coleman 3215BH Light Travel Trailer
Thank you for those details, they were definitely helpful, and we can get you set up with the best option for a weight distribution hitch with sway control for your 2021 Coleman 3215BH Light Travel Trailer. This is a pretty long trailer at nearly 37 feet, so it's really important to get a hitch that is going to give you the most control over your sway, and for that I highly recommend going with the Blue Ox SwayPro, with the right fit for your Coleman trailer being the following: - Blue...

  • Comparing the Blue Ox SwayPro Weight Distribution System BXW1500 and BXW1500-S
The only difference between the Blue Ox SwayPro Weight Distribution System part # BXW1500 and the Blue Ox SwayPro Weight Distribution System part BXW1500-S (which we don't carry) is the shank that is included with either system. The standard system (BXW1500) comes with the Weight Distribution Shank part # BXW4000 which offers up to 2" of drop whereas the extended system (BXW1500-S) comes with the Weight Distribution Shank part # BXW4002 which offers up to 4-1/2" of drop. In order to find...

  • Should Lower Rated Springs Bars Be Upgraded on a Blue Ox SwayPro Weight Distribution System
You are correct. Since your tongue weight falls between the 1,000 lbs - 1,500 lbs range, you would want to switch out your 2 dot spring bars with the 4 dot Replacement Spring Bars for Blue Ox SwayPro Weight Distribution System # BXW4008. This will give you the same set-up as the Blue Ox SwayPro Weight Distribution w/ Sway Control # BXW1500. When hooking up the chains, you should start with the 9th chain from the top (opposite the u-bolt). You can then adjust the chains from there to get...

  • Weight Distribution for a Trailer with Varying Tongue Weight from 400 to 1,500 Pounds
No worries, I can help you out with this issue. It is a common question, a varying load. There are weight distribution systems that have a tongue weight capacity range. The widest range is 600 to 1,200 pounds. There is also an 800 to 1,500 pound system. Considering that you can potentially have 1,500 pounds tongue weight you will need a system that goes at least that high. There is a Blue Ox system, # BXW1500, that is rated for up to 1,500 pounds tongue weight and requires a minimum of...
