Bias Tires vs. Radial Tires

Bias vs. radial tire graphic

Bias ply tires are designed for off-road or agricultural applications. They are built with thick, durable nylon cords that are positioned at a 30- to 45-degree angle to the direction of travel. The layers alternate in a crisscross pattern, making the sidewalls stiffer so that the entire tire is able to flex easily. As a result, the tire provides a smooth ride and improved handling when trailering on uneven surfaces.

etrailer shipping and price were GREAT!

The
issue I have is with the tire itself. The date code is nearly 2 years old and they arrive looking like it. Smashed into a pancake that took a lot of time with my straps, tire changer and warming up in the sun to mount and seat. Fortunately I have a motorcycle tire changer and am experienced with tires to get them mounted and seated.

No wonder all the local places only sell the tire mounted on the wheel!

by:

The tires look great and I’m just waiting for warmer weather to put them on my wood splitter.

by:

Perfect match for an old 1960's era Montgomery-Ward utility trailer I found buried in a junk pile and restored for use on the farm behind ATV and golf cart.

by:

price was less than I could purchase the tires for locally and service was fast. I was surprised that the 3 tires I ordered were squished almost flat and came stacked in a box only 8.5 inches high. Hopefully they will work fine once mounted and inflated. They were also manufactured in 2022 which means they're already 2 years old when I received them which is significant if one goes by the industry standard that trailer tires should be replaced every 5-6 years. Hopefully they were stored in a cool dark warehouse.

by:

Awful - The problem isn't the quality of the tires, it's the condition I received them in. The tires came squashed so flat they couldn't be seated tubelessly. I had to put tubes in. I didn't want tubes. Sure, now that they're stretched I could maybe take them off and mount them without tubes but who's going to do that? I could tell by eye these weren't squashed flat in shipping, they are stored that way in the warehouse and probably came that way packed from the manufacturer. Very disappointing experience. Wouldn't order again.

This is some thing that we do hear about these tires. When the manufacturer ships the tires. they are tied together and shipped on large pallets. Since they are compressed together to save spacTye, they look a bit out of shape or smooshed when they are delivered. Typically it will mount on the rim just fine however if they are troublesome then I recommend setting out the tire in the sun to make the tire more pliable. Or by a fire place when the temperatures are cold outside.

by:

Great tire! A little tough for me to wrestle onto the rim, but my buddy Charlie did it easily with tire spoons. It is tubeless, it sealed really well, it's DOT approved for highway use, and it is a perfect fit for my heavy duty 7/8 axle utility trailer. For my off road use it will live forever! Thank you.

by:

good tire, should work fine on my tow behind motorcycle trailer.

by:

Worked well for my log splitter.

by:

My wheelbarrow got a flat...again. So I tried a different route. It's a trailer tire but I noticed it is 8in, the same as my wheelbarrow. This is a much more robust tire than the ribbed [tire] that typically lives there. I think the load rating is like 750lbs, way more than I will ever put in there. Anyway if you want to put a truly heavy duty tire on you wheelbarrow, this is it. etrailer had the best price and it got here fast.

by:

I have an old wheelbarrow that takes this size tire. This trailer tire is much higher quality and carries much more weight than an ordinary wheelbarrow tire. Installation was simple using the old tube. I am very happy with this product and the service.

by:

Tires were very good. Fit to my trailer perfectly
Thanks

by:

Rec'd tires 3-13-24. Now I can finish my yard cart repairs.

by:

Quick delivery, easy to find on the site and reasonable price. Site seems very user friendly.

This has worked out great, the log splitter that the tires were placed on have held air. I am very happy with my purchase and definitely will be back for other products.

by:

These tires are perfect in every way. What I received was exactly what I was expecting. I would absolutely recommend etrailer for tire needs.

by:

Still holding air still looks new

by:

Identical tire to my 18 year old log splitter tire that finally wore out. Wasn't easy to find but of course Etrailer had it and got it to me in Montana in a couple of days. Great tire from a great company!!

by:

Just as I expected. This was a direct replacement for tire that had a punctured sidewall.

by:

Tires were what I was looking for

by:

Great tire, put on a bayliner

by:

Very good tire. Worked perfectly.

by:

Easy to order and it was delivered very quickly

by:

Excellant choice for my project. Very happy with the price and delivery from E Trailer. They are my go to source. Thank you

  • What is Speed Rating of Trailer Tire in Size 4.80/4.00-8
If there isn't a stated speed rating for a trailer tire it's a safe bet to stick with 65 mph as the max rating. In the tire size you have of 4.80/4.00-8 all of the options we carry like the # AM10002 are rated for 65 mph and there aren't any options with a higher speed rating.

  • What Is Maximum Highway Speed For Kenda K371 Bias Trailer Tire
The maximum speed rating for trailer tires is 65 MPH. The B rating is the load rating for the tire, which is 590 pounds at 65 PSI. You always want to have the tires of your trailer inflated to the maximum PSI rating at all times. If they are not inflated to maximum PSI, the thick sidewalls can heat up and wear faster than normal. I have linked an FAQ on trailer tires that you may find as a good reference.

  • Does Changing the Air Pressure Change the Weight Capacity of a Trailer Tire
The short answer is 60 psi. If you put less air in tire # AM10002 the capacity does start to go down. But to avoid any potential problems you should just keep trailer tires inflated to the maximum psi indicated on the tire. This is because trailer tires are built with a thicker sidewall than passenger vehicle tires to handle more vertical load. If under inflated the thicker sidewall generates excessive heat and can lead to failure.

We don't offer a higher rated 4.80/4.00-8 tire, but we do offer one mounted on an 8 inch wheel with a 4 on 4 bolt pattern in a load range C, as part # AM30060. The tire has a 745 lb capacity. If you wish to retain your existing wheels, we offer a 5-70-8 tire in a Load Range B as part # AM10013 which has a 1075 lb capacity per tire. • Can 5.30-12 Trailer Tires be Used to Replace ST205/65-10 Tires on a Snowmobile Trailer
The more narrow the tire the less contact with the road it will have which means the ride will be smoother. But I would go with the tires the trailer manufacturer recommends for the trailer. It should indicate the proper size on the tongue or frame somewhere. The ST205/65-10 tires, if they are a load range D or E will have a higher capacity than all sizes for a 5.30-12 tire so you would be limited to the lower capacity if you did make the switch. The 5.30-12 will only be about 1.4 inches...

The size difference between the Kenda 4.80/4.00-8 tire and your tractor tire size 16/5.00-8 is quite small so this tire should work fine on your tractor front wheels. We offer two tires in this size, both the Load Range C, # AM10004, rated for a maximum load of 760 lbs at 90 psi; and also a Load Range B tire rated for 590 lbs at 60 psi, part # AM10002.

With trailer tires like the part # AM10002 you always need to inflate them to the max pressure rating that's on the side of the tire when they are cold. So in this case you'd want to go with 60 psi. This ensures that you get the full weight capacity of the tire as well as prevent heat build up.

I want to start by thanking you again for your purchase. We truly appreciate your business. The Kenda K371 Bias Trailer Tire, # AM10002, that you purchased do not require a tube. This tire is specifically designed for use without a tube and using one would cause too much heat build-up and result in premature failure of the tire. Since our trailer tires are not designed to use the inner tube, we do not carry them.

  • Can I Replace a 4.80-8 Trailer Tire with a 4.80-12 or 5.30-12 Trailer Tire
You can replace a 4.80-8 trailer tire with a 4.80-12 or a 5.30-12 trailer tire, but there are a few things to consider before making the change. First, 4.80-12 and 5.30-12 tires are going to have a larger overall diameter than a 4.80-8 tire, by about 4 inches, so you will want to make sure your trailer has enough room in the fender well to accept the larger tire and wheel. Also, a 5.30-12 tire will be about 1 inch wider. The width will not make as big of a difference as the diameter,...
