Bias Tires vs. Radial Tires

Bias vs. radial tire graphic

Bias ply tires are designed for off-road or agricultural applications. They are built with thick, durable nylon cords that are positioned at a 30- to 45-degree angle to the direction of travel. The layers alternate in a crisscross pattern, making the sidewalls stiffer so that the entire tire is able to flex easily. As a result, the tire provides a smooth ride and improved handling when trailering on uneven surfaces.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

A good alternative to 20.5 x 8-10 tires

  • Compatibility of 4.8-8 Trailer Tires to Replace 5.70-8 Tires On Boat Trailer
The Kenda K371 Bias Trailer Tire - 4.80/4.00-8 - Load Range C # AM10004 has a load rating of 745 lbs as you stated. With that load capacity meeting your criteria, the only issue is the wheels. This tire size will only fit 8x3.75 inch wheel/rims which isn't an issue because that is the same size wheel/rim the 5.70-8 tires like # AM10012 fit. The difference is 4.7 width and 16.1 inch diameter instead of 5.9 inches wide and 18 inch diameter so you will lose 1 inch in the height of your...

Unfortunately you do have an odd size spindle. My recommendation is to replace the spindle with the BTR E-Z Lube Spindle for 2,000-lb Trailer Axles - 1-1/4" Diameter # TRU44FR and then use hubs like the following options based on your bolt pattern: -Trailer Idler Hub Assembly for 2,000-lb E-Z Lube Axles - 4 on 4 - L44649 Bearings - Pre-Greased # AKIHUB-440-2-EZ-2K -Trailer Idler Hub for 2K E-Z Lube Axles - 13" to 15" Wheels - 5 on 4-1/2 - Pre-Greased # AKIHUB-545-2-LFEZ-2K This will...

  • 12 Inch Trailer Tire for Highway Use and a 1,195 Pound Trailer
A radial tire is going to be better for highways. They run cooler and track better than bias ply tires. You can use tire # AM10130. This is a 145/R12 tire, load range D, rated for 1,220 pounds at 65 psi. The tires have a speed rating of 65 miles per hour. Trailer tires should always be inflated to the maximum psi indicated on the tire sidewall. This is because trailer tires are built with a thicker sidewall than passenger vehicle tires to handle more vertical load. If under inflated the...

  • Correct Replacement Trailer Tire Size for 1-1/2 Ton Utility Trailer That Uses 215/75R/15 Tires
The tire size currently on your trailer, 215/75R/15, is a light truck/passenger tire and not a trailer tire. You will be better off with tires made specifically for use on a trailer and rated appropriately for the axle. Keep in mind that the load your trailer can carry will be limited to the lowest rated component in the system - either the wheels/tires, the axles or the trailer frame itself. Increasing the capacity of one component, such as the tires/wheels, does not necessarily increase...

  • Will a Higher Capacity Trailer Tire Last Longer on a 4x8 Trailer Harbor Freight Trailer
The first problem is that you are running lower air pressure than what the tire is rated for. Trailer tires should ALWAYS be inflated to the maximum air pressure as indicated on the tire. The reason is that trailer tires are constructed with a thicker sidewall than passenger vehicle tires. Because of the thicker sidewall, if the tires are under-inflated there will be more heat build up and than can cause the tires to fail and as you are seeing wear out quickly. If your trailer weight...

  • Trailer Tires to Replace 215/50-10 Tires on a Custom Made Boat Trailer
A tire size 215/50-10 is not a common trailer tire size. For a tire that is close in size that should fit the same wheels you have you can go with a 205/65-10. I have linked the tires we carry in this size to the right. This size is about 1/2 inch more narrow than the ones you currently have. And it is about 2 inches taller. You will need over 1 inch of clearance above the existing tires to go to this size. All of the tires we carry in this size have a speed rating of 65 miles per hour. The...

  • Spare Wheel/Tire Combo Recommendation for CE Smith Boat/PWC Trailer # CE48810
You could use either the # AM30020 for a white painted steel wheel or the # AM30030 for a steel wheel with a galvanized finish. The tires that are included on the CE Smith # CE48810 trailer are manufactured by Kenda, the same company as the tires used on both the wheel/tire combos I mentioned. The tread pattern might be slightly different, but because the tire will be used as a spare, it doesn't need to be an exact match.

  • Possible Reasons Why Tires on 2004 28 ft Wilderness Travel Trailer Are Separating and Blowing Out
There are a few reasons why trailer tires fail. The primary cause is excessive heat build-up. Excessive heat build up can be caused by overloading the trailer, exceeding the speed rating of the tire and failing to keep the tires inflated to the full pressure indicated on the tire sidewall. Be sure you're using the proper size and load rated tires. There should be an ID plate somewhere on the trailer showing the manufacturer's recommendations. Trailer tires have a speed rating which should...

  • Availability of Tire Size Smaller than 5.70-8 for Trailer
For a tire that is 2 inches smaller in diameter than your tire size of 5.70-8 we have the size 4.80-8 like part # AM30020 which would put your trailer 1 inch closer to the ground. I was going to recommend just a tire since this size will fit your current rim but the cost is almost equal with or without the rim so it wouldn't really make sense.

  • Can Trailer Tires Be Aired Down for Better Traction on Icy Pavement
We recommend running the vast majority of trailer tires at the pressure rating listed on the tire sidewall, and for very good reason. You can lower the tire pressure to increase the tire's contact surface with the pavement if you wish, however by doing so you are reducing the tire's capacity by an unknown degree. The tire's listed capacity is at the pressure rating listed on the tire's sidewall, if that pressure is lowered you won't know what the tire's capacity actually is which could...

  • Can I Use Tires that Use Different Required PSI on a 2-Axle Trailer?
When considering tire PSI for a 2-axle Jayco White Hawk trailer, it is critical that the PSI requirements are the same for all tires. If a tire has a different PSI rating, that is an indicator that the load rating and capacity are different. With that being said, it is important to have tires that require the same PSI. If you need recommendations for different tires for your trailer, feel free to reach out to me with your needed tire size, and I will be happy to make a recommendation for you.

  • Should Trailer Tire Rated for 90 PSI be Ran Always at 90 PSI
Trailer tires are unique in that they are designed to be inflated to their max psi rating when cold regardless of the load on them. This ensures you don't create excess heat which would cause the tire to fail over time.

  • What Air Pressure Should I Run in My Trailer Tires?
We recommend that all trailer tires be inflated to the max psi stated on the sidewall of the tire. If the tire is under inflated, the weight capacity is lowered to an unknown amount for that tire. Although running lower air pressures can improve the ride of the trailer with lighter loads, the weight rating that the tire can carry will be reduced. If a heavier load is put on the trailer without changing the air pressure to the recommended amount, the sidewall of the tire could heat up and...

  • Should Travel Trailer Tires Be Aired Up To Max Pressure Stamped On Sidewall?
Trailer tires like those found on your Travel Trailer should be aired up to the max pressure stamped on the sidewall of the tire. Since you mentioned it is stamped 80 PSI you will want to air them up to 80 PSI. Trailer tires are different than vehicle tires in that they are designed to be run at the max PSI, and running lower PSI causes the sidewall to get more heat which leads to shorter tire life. There is one exception being the Goodyear Endurance line of tires, which are designed...

  • Is There A Benefit To Going With A Higher Load Range Tire Than Your Trailer Requires
Yes, the higher rated load range is going to have a higher capacity, which means that there will be less wear and tear on the tires. The higher the strain on the tires the more heat builds up and heat is the biggest enemy of tires. Since the tires would be overrated for the load they wouldn't have as much strain and would run cooler, ultimately giving your tires a longer lifespan. Along with that you'll also want to use tire covers like Adco's # 290-3952 to help protect the sidewalls...

  • Do Bearings Impact Max Speed Rating of Trailer Tires
Bearings play no role in the maximum speed of trailer tires. The speed is based on the rating given to the tire from the manufacturer. If you don't have speed listed like on the # AM30020 then you can assume it is rated for the standard speed of 65 mph. If it is higher than 65 a trailer tire will have a rating with a letter like M which would be 81 mph.
