Bias Tires vs. Radial Tires

Bias vs. radial tire graphic

Bias ply tires are designed for off-road or agricultural applications. They are built with thick, durable nylon cords that are positioned at a 30- to 45-degree angle to the direction of travel. The layers alternate in a crisscross pattern, making the sidewalls stiffer so that the entire tire is able to flex easily. As a result, the tire provides a smooth ride and improved handling when trailering on uneven surfaces.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

The etrailer staff was great at helping me with this order. I needed these wheels with tires to rejuvenate a 1997 Coleman Destiny Taos popup camper that has been sitting in the north woods for 17 years. The wheels fit perfectly and the tires worked like a charm for me to drive the camper about 100 miles to my home. Although rated for faster speed, I kept my speed limited to 65 miles per hour. I had purchased three so that I could also replace the spare tire. I expect these tires will get me through many many more miles after I put my rebuilt camper back into service. I am very happy with the etrailer staff and with my purchase.

After a year, the tires are still working out well.

by:

Got just what I needed and on time. Tires were ready to go right out of the box

by:

Second time I've ordered these from E-trailer, great tires and rims, fast delivery, just wish they hadn't doubled in price since 2019, that's why 4 stars and not 5.

by:

After installing these tires and wheels on my small utility trailer I was back in business and happy to be able to use my trailer again. The tires have been great - no problems whatsoever. The wheels and shiny new center caps look great on this 35 year old trailer. Online purchase and delivery was carried out without a hitch (trailer joke).

by:

etrailer had the wheels I needed and shipped them to me within a week. They were exactly what I needed and priced very reasonably. Thank you

by:

Arrived on time, perfect for application, even arrived inflated. Re-ordering to have a spare

by:

Tires worked great. They are the same ones that came on my dad's trailer 30+ years ago.

by:

Glad to review this item. I had just picked up a 1992 JetSki for my grand kids to use on vacation. It was a rust bucket trailer but the JetSki needed to be cleaned up. I replaced just about everything on the trailer it did not have a spare tire nor a place to put it. I had been looking at the etrailer web site and found everything I needed to make the trailer safe, so with everything I needed was there and the perfect spare tire and mounting bracket. I am almost ready to hit the road.

by:

Just want I wanted they will be bogie wheels for a track vehicle

by:

My order was exactly what I ordered, appear to be of excellent quality!

by:

I am a Taylor Dunn cart restorer and I only use Kenda tire and wheel combination 570 X 8 and use new tires on my restoration. I had a few question and I received information and on the phone and the next day I received an answer to a additional question. On the tire and wheel combo you will not find a better price and service then with this company. I don’t work for them as you can see my cart restoration picture. Thanks for the great service.

by:

The products are fine... the order processing and shipping were unbelievably fast... The one "downer" was that the lighting kit was put in the box without any additional packing/cushioning... the package split open and the contents of the kit were scattered among the tires... luckily, the lights/parts appear undamaged, as far as I can see... I have yet to install the kit and test it...

by:

I’m very happy with the quality of the product and with the excellent customer service that I received!

by:

Is the product quality and value is exc ellent

by:

good price, prompt delivery

by:

I needed replacement tires for a small used quad trailer I purchased. These tires and wheels were perfect both in price and performance! I will definitely purchase them again when needed.

Bought these replacement tires for small Coleman pop-up camper. Have them a year, they weathered great through frigid winter even though I left camper on ground instead of lifting on blocks. To be fair I only take it out once a year, so only a few hundred miles on them. BUT, I had trouble finding these in stock elsewhere and Crystal @ etrailer provided superb customer service in helping me find products I needed.

Still in great condition

by:

I ordered 2 trailer tires with rims on May 16th and they arrived on May 20th. My order was just as I requested, the tires were high quality and the price was comparable or less than what I would have paid locally, but the size I needed wasn’t available at any local dealer.
I am very pleased with my purchase from e-Trailer and I recommend them highly to anyone based on product inventory, quality, price and speed of shipping. . Also, their customer service department is very helpful and knowledgeable.

  • Recommended Tire And Wheel Sizes To Change To For A Camper With 5.70-8 Tires
When you say blowouts and attribute them to heat buildup, you are correct. The reason you have heat buildup in tires is not just because of the size, it will also be from overloading, damage to the tires and age. So to just change size first might not solve the problem. If the tires hit curbs a lot it would cause damage to the sidewalls and form a weak spot, which would allow the heat to buildup and go to the weakest spot in the tire and fail. Also any punctures or repairs to the tires...

  • Can Tubes be Used With Trailer Tire AM10012?
It is not recommended to use tubes in a tubeless tire like the Kenda K353 # AM10012 because it will generate more heat in the tire which can lead to a blowout. If you are looking for a tire with tubes because the wheels on your trailer are designed for tube tires, I recommend replacing the wheel and tire. To do this, you only need to know your wheel's bolt pattern; if you are unsure what it is I have added a link to a help article detailing how to find it. For a 5.70-8 bias tire and wheel...

  • Can a 205/65-10 Trailer Tire Fit in Place of a 5.70 x 8 Trailer Tire on a Popup Camper
Provided that the manual for the camper and the camper itself match, that is unique problem. I am inclined to lean towards the sticker on the trailer in this case. But, to be sure, you will need to determine the axle capacity and choose the tires and load rating that match it. The modern size for 20.5 x 8-10 is 205/65-10. This tire has a 20.5 inch diameter and it is about 8 inches wide. A 5.70 x 8 tire is 18.1 inches in diameter and is 5.7 inches wide so there is significant size difference....

  • Recommended 5.70-8 Tire and Wheel Combo for a Popup Camper
For your popup camper with 5.70-8 tires, I recommend choosing a bias ply tire with a load range of C or greater. A load range C rating will give you 1,820 lbs for two tires which will be plenty for your needs. For just the tire, I recommend using the Kenda K353 Bias Trailer Tire part # AM10012 which has a load range C ratings, 65 mph limit, and comes with a 2-year warranty. Some things you will want to avoid are overloading you trailer and exceeding the maximum mph rating as these will...

  • Trailer Wheel and Tire Recommendation for 1984 Jayco J Series Camper
Most likely you have the need for the tire size of 5.70-8 since the wheels are 8 inch in diameter and 4 inch wide. So if that's the case we have two options. The part # AM30120 for if you have a 4 lug bolt pattern or the part # AM30140 for if you have a 5 lug bolt pattern. Verify the tire size though by checking what is printed on the sidewall of the trailer tire.

  • Tire Recommendation for 8" Wheel with 5 on 4-1/2" Bolt Pattern
I have a solution for you to use an 8" wheel with a 5 on 4-1/2" bolt pattern, but we don't carry any tires that fit with the 5-3/8" wheels like what you're looking at with the Americana # AM20016. Instead I recommend using the Kenda 5.70-8 Bias Trailer Tire with 8" White Wheel # AM30140 which uses a 3-3/4" wide wheel but has the 5 on 4-1/2" bolt pattern and a Load Range C (910 lbs at 75 psi) which is more than enough for your weight rating. Attached is a review video for you to check out.

  • Weight Capacity of the Kenda 5.70-8 Bias Trailer Tire with Rim # AM30140
The Kenda 5.70-8 Bias Trailer Tire with Rim # AM30140 that you referenced has a capacity of 910 lbs at 75 psi. Trailer tires should always be inflated to their max psi. If a trailer tire is inflated to a lower air pressure than the maximum, the amount of weight that the tire can carry will be reduced. If a heavier load is put on the trailer tire than what is recommended for that air pressure, the sidewall of the tire could heat up and cause the tire to fail.

  • Troubleshooting Motorcycle Trailer that Vibrates at High Speeds
The thing about trailer tires is that unless otherwise noted they cannot exceed 65 miles per hour. It sounds like you exceed this speed and that is why you are getting vibration. Exceeding the speed rating will cause heat to build up in the tire and can cause premature failure. If you took your 8 inch wheels to a wheel and tire shop they should be able to balance them. Going to a larger tire might help you reduce some vibration, but I believe your problem is directly related to the speeds...

There is no bolt pattern for a wheel this size which measures 4-1/4" and 5 on 4-1/2" is most common therefore very likely what you have. It's hard to measure the exact center of a hole. The weight capacity of the 215/60-8 load range C tire is 935 lbs at 50 psi, which is slightly higher than your 5.70-8 wheel and tire combination, so weight capacity will not be an issue.
