Troubleshooting Trailer Brakes that Lock Up When 7-Way is Connected

Question:

I have installed a primusIQ brake controller on my 2007 Chevy avalanche all wired according to instructions. I have a 7-way connector installed from factory which I have hooked a 7-way tester into to try and diagnose my problems. When hooking up the trailer brakes automatically engage. Brake controller shows n.c. When putting the 7-way tester in the 7-way connector, the green light for the trailer brake would not light up. I assume that the controller would recognize a connection with the tester in place but nothing. Hook up the trailer and brakes auto engage. So I reversed the wires under the dash, put blk/red from truck to controller blue and blue from truck to controller black. This did light up the brake light on the tester but I still show n.c. On the controller. So Im at a loss. Any help would be appreciated.

It sounds like the problem is on the trailer side of the wiring. The 7-way on the trailer may be wired wrong or has a short so that the 12 volt power circuit is shorting to the brake output circuit and locking up the trailer brakes.

What you can do is use a jumper wire from the positive side of a 12 car battery to put voltage on all of the circuits of your trailer 7-way and then check out the 7-way diagram I attached to see what circuits should be activating.

I attached an FAQ article on trailer wiring and brake controller troubleshooting for you to check out as well.
