5th Wheel Hitch Options for a 2014 Ram 2500 Short Bed Towing a Montana High Country 5th Wheel

Question:

I have a Ram 2500 short bed with the fifth wheel prep installed from the factory It will tow a Montana High Country 305RL 2015. The Montana advertises a max turn of 90 degree. Our RV salesman recommended a slider hitch. I like the BWRVK3600 but it does not appear to be a slider. Do you believe I need a slider hitch? Would you recommend a different hitch? The fifth wheel weighs 10,000 lbs dry with max load of 12,500 lbs. pin weight 2175lbs. I need to order this by Tues Sept 2nd in order to pick up the RV on the 15th. Pls recommend a hitch in your stock. Thank you.

Since you have a short bed truck, I recommend either a sliding fifth wheel hitch or a Sidewinder pin box. The Sidewinder replaces the OEM pin box that is currently on the trailer, but that would give you the best turning clearance for your truck and trailer.

Fifth wheel manufacturers have began using extended pin boxes on some of their trailers to improve turning clearance, but trucks with beds shorter than 8ft almost always require either a sliding hitch or a Sidewinder pin box to make a 90 degree turn.

If you wanted to go with a Sidewinder, you could use the B&W Companion Fifth Wheel Hitch, # BWRVK3600. Sidewinders are designed to replace specific OEM pin boxes, so we would need to know the manufacturer and model number of the pin box before we can choose the correct Sidewinder.

I have attached a couple help articles on fifth wheel trailers and Sidewinders for you to check out.

To use a sliding hitch, you would need the Ram OEM Fifth Wheel Rail Adapter, # RP30154, and a sliding hitch.
