Installing Trailer Wiring Harness Part #C59496 on a 2013 VW Tiguan

Question:

I have a wiring question regarding 2013 VW Tiguan. Using the tester that came with the kit, I was able to determine that there is one wire that controls all three functions turn signal, brake light, and running light. There is one additional wire that also controls the running lights both wires are hot when headlights turned on. Currently I have a wiring unit installed with the yellow wire spliced to the 3-function wire and the red and brown wires are grounded with the white. It seems that everything is working, except that if the running lights are on, then there is no additional brake signal e.g. if headlights are on, then trailer running lights are on if I step on the brakes, they dont get any brighter. What do I need to change? Brown wire splice to the 2nd wire that controls running lights?

Expert Reply:

Some vehicles combine stop and tail light functions onto 1 circuit and then also have an additional tail light function wire that is independent of the stop (such as your 2013 VW Tiguan).

These vehicles will require that you attach the trailer light power module red “stop” wire to the same combined circuit on the vehicle and then attach the brown “tail light” circuit to the independent circuit on the vehicle.
