I may have a solution for you to have a 2 inch hitch receiver opening on your 2004 Subaru Forester.

The only hitch available for your Forester is a Class II, 1-1/4 inch receiver hitch like the Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch, # 36311. I have attached an installation video for you to check out.

Since there are no 2 inch hitches available for your Forester, you would need to use an adapter like part # HTAD to convert your 1-1/4 inch hitch receiver to a 2 inch receiver. The hitch pins and clips needed for use with the adapter are part # PC2 and # PC3.

Although using an adapter like # HTAD will indeed allow you to mount a 2 inch shank hitch accessory in the Class II receiver, it does lower your tongue weight capacity (maximum amount of weight that can be suspended from the receiver) by 50 percent. Using an adapter places the load further away from the receiver, thus placing more leverage on the receiver and this is the reasoning behind the reduced weight capacity. This adapter should only be used for hitch mounted accessories like bike racks and cargo carriers and should not be used for towing.

From the information that I was able to gather, it looks as though the vehicle's tongue weight capacity of 200 pounds makes it the lowest rated component in this set up. By using a hitch adapter, your tongue weight capacity will be reduced to 100 pounds. To avoid damage to the hitch and your vehicle, you will want to make sure that you do not exceed this limit.
