1-1/4 Inch to 2 Inch Adapter Will Not Fit In Class I Trailer Hitch on a 2012 Toyota Prius V
Question:
I purchases a hitch for my 2012 Prius V. After installation I attempted to slide an adapter into the receiver and found that it would not slide in completely so that the pin holes could line up. After inspection I could see a small dab of steel inside the hitch receiver. What is up with that. Is that purposeful or a defect?

Helpful Expert Reply:
That is purposeful. The hitch you have is a Class I trailer hitch for your 2012 Toyota Prius V. That tab is inside the shank to prevent users from installing Class II accessories which have the potential of overloading a Class I trailer hitch leading to damage to the hitch, accessory, and even the vehicle. This is something that we have made a picture for and added to all Class I trailer hitch product pages, if applicable. I have included the picture here for you. Some of the hitches could potentially have the tab on the other side of the receiver.
All you need is an adapter that is Class I compatible. For a Class I compatible expander you could use # HTAD. However, the use of any type of adapter will reduce the tongue weight capacity of the trailer hitch by 50 percent and it puts more stress on the hitch and vehicle.
So for trailer hitch # 24847 the capacity will drop from 200 pounds to 100 pounds when you use the adapter. And if you are using the adapter and hitch for a bike rack, a Class I trailer hitch is rated for a maximum of 2 bikes.
