Using the Saris Bones EX 3 Trunk Bike Rack on a 2019 Kia Sorento
Question:
Can the straps for the top be tied to the roof rack instead of being hooked into the frame of the lift gate?

While hooking the top hooks of the Saris Bones EX 3 # SA803 to your frame is preferable, you technically can tie the top straps to your roof rack. You still need to run the top straps through the tab on the top arms and make sure that the strap lies flat before it is anchored. Attached is a picture of the rack on a Kia Sorento. Note where the feet and the straps are placed.
From my experience with the bike rack, I prefer using the hooks since it is easier to attach and detach that way. As long as all three sets of straps are tightened down properly and evenly, then the hooks will do their job of keeping the rack secure. I attached my video review of this rack on a Prius V which is similar in rear door design to your 2019 Kia Sorento. This rack does not come with a lock, so you may need to pick up a cable lock like # SA981 to keep the rack and your bikes secure while transporting them.
