Recommended Trailer Hitch for 2013 Kia Sportage

Question:

Hi, Looking for a trailer hitch for a 2013 Sportage LX AWD - Kia states a Class 1 hitch is required. When I search for that particular model on your website, it only lists a Class II hitch for that vehicle. Am I missing something? Thanks

Class II or III hitches are available for your Sportage LX. I believe Kia is telling your that your Sportage has a Class I towing capcity, which maxes out at 2000 lbs.

The Class II hitches would have a 3500 lb towing, 300 lb tongue weight capacity, while the Class III would have the same towing capacity but a higher tongue weight capacity at 350 lbs. This being said, the amount of weight you will be able to tow will be limited by the towing capacity of the vehicle (which I wasn't able to find in the owner's manual). You can use a Class II or III hitch as long as you abide by the capacity of the lowest rated component in your towing system. If your copy of the owners manual doesn't list a towing capacity, your Kia dealer should be able to provide you with that information.

If you're needing the hitch as an attachment point for a bike rack, the Draw-Tite Class II receiver part # 75717 would be an excellent choice. You would also need a ball mount and hitch ball. I suggest the etrailer.com ball mount kit for 2" hitches, # 989900, which will include what you need to tow with your hitch receiver. You will also need a trailer wiring harness, part # 118526.
