What Class Of Hitch Do I Have On My 2022 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon?
Question:
I own a 2022 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon. Stated on window sticker is that a class II hitch was installed. However on the Jeep is currently a 2” receiver opening. As I understand it that means it is already a class 3 hitch correct? What is different about your class 3 vs what appears to be a close match on the vehicle now? I have 4.10 gears and the same engine that the Gladiators have with a 7600 lb towing capacity. I am seeking to pull 5000lbs and as I understand it - if what is installed is a class 2 hitch I am regulated to 3600 lbs whether the vehicle will pull more or not. Thanks

That is a good question Joel. I will start by saying that these days, the class designation for a trailer hitch does not always tell you the full story. In some cases the line between class 2 and 3 can get pretty blurry with so many different hitches out there. We try to stick to using the receiver size, and weight capacity to describe a specific hitch.
All of that said, since the hitch installed on your 2022 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon has a 2" receiver, we would have to assume that it is a class 3 hitch. All of the hitches we carry for the 2022 Wrangler are considered class 3 and have the same 2" receiver size. They will also bolt on much in the same way as the hitch in your picture. The weight capacities range from 3,500 lbs to 5,000 lbs max. So just because it is a 2" receiver does not necessarily mean it can handle the 5,000 lb load. Generally, there would be a sticker somewhere on the hitch that tells us that brand, model number and weight capacity.
If it was a class 2 hitch we would expect to see a weight capacity of 3,500 lbs or less, and/or the smaller 1-1/4" receiver size. I am not aware of any 1-1/4" hitches made for the 2022 Wrangler.
Since we do not know the capacity of the current hitch, I recommend replacing it with our etrailer class 3 hitch # e98856, which is rated for 5,000 lbs. it will be a fairly easy bolt on install, and that way we can be confident of the towing capacity. We do recommend that you check your owners manual and verify what the vehicle is rated to tow. The hitch may be rated for 5K but you will still want to stick to the manufacturers specified towing capacities.
