How to Raise Rear of 2017 Keystone Cougar 283RETWE

Question:

We recently purchased a 2017 Keystone Cougar 283RETWE. The trailer was riding nose high when connected to our 2006 Ford F350 4X4 Powerstroke see picture. We have since raised the pin fully which leveled it out a bit, but it was also suggested to upgrade the leaf springs to add more height to the back end. I have attached pictures of our axles. What would be the “upgraded” leaf springs for these axles? Thank you.

Typically upgrading your leaf springs implies increasing the capacity, but that isn't going to raise the back of your 5th wheel. The only difference new leaf springs would make is if your current leaf springs are worn out and flat. Installing new leaf springs would be a good idea either way if that is the case.

To find a replacement you would need to measure the length of your current leaf springs and also know your axle capacity. The # e27SR you looked at is intended to replace a 26" long leaf spring on a 4,500 lb axle.

If you want to raise the rear of the trailer you have two options. The first is to flip the axles using Dexter Trailer Springs Over-Under Conversion Kit # K71-385-00. This is designed for 3" diameter axles which is likely what you have on your 5th wheel, but make sure to measure just to be sure. This would move the leaf springs on top of the axle, raising it by the height of the trailer plus the leaf spring stack.

The other option would be to take it to a trailer shop and have them weld on new hangers to change the height and raise the rear up. If your leaf springs are already on top of the axle this would be the only available option.
