Can Brakes be Added to 2,000 lb Axle without Brake Flanges
Question:
Hi. I am hoping you can help me the parts/kit I need to upgrade the axle in my 5x8 Hiker Tear Trailer. With accessories, the trailer is coming in at an estimated 1200 lbs +/-. It sounds like the best bet to add brakes to the unit is just to swap out the axle. I dont believe there are brake flanges on the current 2000lb, short leaf spring axle photo attached. While Im at it, I would like to add a little clearance and beef up the suspension to handle dirt roads/washboard a bit easier not rock crawling, more forest road in the PNW The factory upgrade version for this trailer includes a 3500lb derated axle with torsion suspension. Is that what you would recommend or can I still get away with using possibly flipped leaf springs? I should add that the trailer currently has 14inch wheels, so I would probably have to get a 15inch wheel as well, yes? This is the model I currently have: I know theres a lot of questions here, so thanks for your help!

I would check first to see if you do have brake flanges before going forward buying parts because if you do that would make it pretty easy. Otherwise you could look into having flanges welded on as that's an option too. We have them with part # 4-34. You'll need to find a welder with the correct jigs for this job.
If you can get me the brand, capacity, and axle style of what you have I can see if we have a lift for it.
We have the parts needed to add brakes to a 2,000 lb axle as well. For that you'd want the # AKHD-545-2-1K for the hub/drum that will fit on your axle and then for brake assemblies you'd want the # 23-48 for the right hand side and # 23-47 for the left hand side.
