Availability of Brake Controller Wiring Harness for 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee with Tow Package
Question:
Im looking for a custom harness for the 1998 jeep grand cherokee with the tow package. I want to move my brake controller between my explorer and my jeep. Is there a custom harness for my old jeep? Is part number TK93VR compatible with the 1998 jeep wiring?

Jeep did not install a brake controller connector under the dash for the older Grand Cherokees, so the brake controller would need to be hardwired. If your Grand Cherokee has the OEM 7-way on the rear bumper (it will say Mopar on the cover), the output circuit for the 7-way will have been ran already.
Look for a light green or possibly blue length of wire coiled under the dash near the emergency brake pedal. If you are planning on using a Tekonsha brake controller of recent manufacture, you can use the quick disconnect, part # 20127. If the output circuit was already ran, it would connect to the blue wire on the disconnect. The red wire would connect to the brake stoplight switch located at the top of the brake pedal. The switch will typically have several different wires exiting it, you will want to use a circuit tester like part # PTW2993 and locate the circuit that only shows power when the brake pedal is pushed. Usually, its and white and tan striped wire, but I would recommend testing it to be sure. The black wire would be extended and attach to the positive battery terminal, via a 20- or 30-amp breaker and the white wire would ground to the negative battery terminal. We offer an installation kit that provides the wire and needed connectors, part # 5506. If you do NOT have the OEM 7-way, the output circuit will not be ran, in which case you will need the full install kit, part # ETBC7.
If you are using the Prodigy P2, part # 90885, you can purchase an additional mounting pocket, part # 7686 which would allow you to swap the controller back and forth between vehicles very easily.
