Loud Clicking Noise in 2012 Toyota Tundra with Tekonsha Prodigy P3 Brake Controller # 90195
Question:
Hi I just installed my prodigy p3 in my 2012 tundra and now have a loud clicking noise on the column. I used the harness adapter for the Toyota. Any help would be great. Thank you.

I spoke to my technical contact at Tekonsha about the clicking noise you mention. There are several possibilities for this.
Inside the P3 there is a relay that engages to allow the trailer brake lights to illuminate when the manual override lever is pressed. (Normally the lights would illuminate when you step on the brake pedal.) You can check to make sure the override is not engaged.
I take it that the noise is coming from the steering column. If your Tundra has an automatic transmission there is a shifting solenoid that triggers when you press the brake; this is a safety feature that prevents the transmission from moving into gear accidentally. This too could be a source for the clicking noise.
You can try relocating the harness ground wire ring terminal to a new spot on the vehicle. This should be firmly affixed to a clean bare metal spot under the dash or to an existing ground point for the vehicle OEM wiring. Please refer to the linked video showing installation of the # 3040-P harness in a 2010 Tundra. You can sand off the paint to reveal a bare metal surface if necessary.
There is a remote chance that the plug-and-play harness is not wired correctly. I have attached an image of the harness vehicle connector showing how the wire colors and functions should be pinned. If your harness differs you can re-pin it according to the diagram.
Last you can unplug the harness from the vehicle port. If the clicking persists when you unplug the harness you might want to contact your Toyota dealership.
