Should Actual Trailer Weight or Gross Trailer Weight Be Used for Pivot Point on Fulton Fold-Away Kit

Question:

My 5x8 utility trailer has a 3500lb capacity but I never put more than 500lbs or so on it I use it for a raft trailer. I need the tongue to extend to 48inch in front of the hinge if at all possible. According to the chart, the max is 36inch for trailers with 3500lb weight rating, but I wont be carrying anywhere near that amount at any time.

Expert Reply:

In regards to the Fulton Fold-Away Coupler Hinge Kit part # FHDPB230101, Fulton does use the gross trailer weight rather than the actual trailer weight for their max pivot length. I can't recommend going against this but I would assume they are just erroring on the side of caution and so long as you know the actual weight of the trailer, the tongue in particular you should not have any problems so long as you are under their ratings.

I have attached an install video and review I did below.
