How to Carry 4 Bikes with a 2010 Toyota RAV4

Question:

I have a 2010 Toyota RAV4 4 Cyl. and installed a hitch receiver ie not factory. According to the manual, the maximum tongue capacity is 150lb which would be limiting over the TW capacity of the hitch receiver. Does that mean the total weight of my bike rack and any bikes cannot exceed 150lb? With four 4 bikes at approximately 32lb each, does that mean the maximum weight of any bike rack would be 22lb or 150 - 32x4? The does not seem to make sense.... If that is the case, what are my options for a bike rack to transport the 4 bikes?

Great question, and the short answer is yes, you need to keep from exceeding that 150 lb tongue weight rating. Since all 4-bike racks are going to be heavier than 22 lbs I recommend either using a 2-bike hitch carrier and looking for another way to carry your other 2 bikes, or swapping out your hitch for something with a larger capacity that is better equipped to handle the weight of all 4 bikes and a bike rack.

If you choose to stick with your current hitch then I recommend checking out the Thule Camber Bike Rack # TH9058 and the SeaSucker Mini Bomber # 298-BM2006. This combo gives you a quality 2-bike rack as well as a roof mount option that doesn't require a roof rack as well.

If you'd rather go with a trailer hitch that is a it more heavy duty then I recommend installing the etrailer Trailer Hitch # e98864 and using the Thule Camber 4 Bike Rack # TH9056. This gives you a way to carry all 4 bikes on your vehicle without having to mount any to the roof.
