7-Way 12 Volt Circuit Does Not Work and Brake Control Shows Constant 12 Volts 2012 Nissan Frontier

I bought and installed this unit and almost everything works but the charging circuit for the trailer. No power. Also the brake circuit is a steady 12v without the pedal pushed in. Connected to a Tekonsha Prodigy P2 Trailer Brake Controller I also bought from you. Any ideas?

First, it is possible that the harness is miswired and you would need to switch the black and blue wires on the small black connector. If this does not work then there are some other things to look at.

Some Nissan vehicles will require an additional relay in the in-cab fuse panel that you can get from a dealer to make the wiring harness fully functional. However I have not heard of this being an issue on the Frontier so there could be something else going on.

First, lets focus on the 12 volt power circuit on the 7-Way. The brown relay that came with harness # 118266 should be powering the 12 volt circuit. If that relay is bad then the 12 volt circuit will not work. We do carry a brown and 2 blue relays you can use, # C57000. If it is not the relay then there must be a loose or broken connection somewhere between the jumper harness in the cab and the 7-Way at the back.

For the brake controller it sounds like something has not been wired correctly. If your Frontier did not come with a factory trailer connector then you would have needed to hardwire in the controller. The black wire supplies power to the brake controller. White is ground, red is input from the brake switch, and blue is output to the 7-Way.

If you did use a plug and play type of harness it may not work properly if the vehicle did not come factory equipped with a 7-Way. I recommend hardwiring it in if you have not already done so. Attach the white wire to the negative battery terminal and the black wire to the positive battery terminal via a circuit breaker which I will cover later.

The red wire attaches to the cold side of the brake switch. Use a circuit tester like # PTW2993 to find the brake switch wire, located above the brake pedal, that shows power only when the brake pedal is pressed and not when the headlights are on. The blue wire will need to run back to the 7-Way and attach to the back of it in place of the wire already in the 7:00 position.

Use kit # 5506 which includes a 30-amp circuit breaker. I have included some links that will help with the hardwire installation and with troubleshooting the brake controller.
