Question:

took my xterra to a local hitch installer and he got me going with a curt hitch but had brake lights and stop lights but no running lights. he said it was something like a missing relay from the factory.. local dealer said even with the vin they could not tell me if my vehicle had a missing relay or not. Or even where it was. I need help.

If your Xterra was not equipped with the factory tow package the port under the vehicle where the 4-pole trailer connector like part # C55441 plugs in will NOT be fully active. There is a jumper harness and relays that are needed to activate the tow package.

The Curt # C56225 that we offer includes the 4-pole that plugs into the connector along the drivers side frame rail alongside the spare tire, as well as the jumper harness and relays. The relays plug into the jumper harness, which plugs into a connector located in the toe kick on the passenger side.

I have linked you to an install video showing the jumper and relays being installed on a 2011 Xterra. The procedure for your vehicle will be identical.
