Brakes are adjusted at star on braking plate and at brake controller. Brakes do not grab even with emergency brake slide bar on controller. I have two towing car and pickup both tow ready from factory, out come the same on both. I had trailer since new 2008 wells cargo, used trailer with one of vehicles with no problem 5 months ago.

If you can hear the magnet working then the issue is most likely in the brake adjustment/installation. Please verify that installation is correct then make adjustments. For self adjusting brakes such as Dexter Nev-R-Adjust Electric Trailer Brake Kit, # 23-468-469, this initial adjustment, see the linked installation video below, can sometimes be challenging. After you get that initial set-up accomplished, you can drive the trailer in an empty parking lot and apply the brake a number of times to get the proper final setting.
For manually adjusting brakes you need the Brake Adjustment Spoon # W80630.
