Troubleshooting a Friction Sway Control System that May be Damaged
Question:
I have a friction sway bar already but with your comments about if your trailer is 6000lb and is over 26ft that you should have 2 sway bars. First question is can you have different brands of sway bars on the trailer I have a drawtite do I have to use same brand for second sway bar? How can you test a sway bar to make sure it works properly? It maybe my problem that I backed up with it and possibly damaged it and that is why I have a problem

The Reese Friction Sway Control # 83660 that you referenced is virtually identical to the Draw Tite unit on your vehicle so even if there was an issue with using different brand sway controls it would not be a problem for you.
If you think your current sway control system is damaged the first thing you will want to do is remove it from your trailer and inspect it to see if there is any visible damage. There really isnt a set way to trouble shoot it but you should be able to slide the inner piece inside the outer piece and feel the friction increase as you tighten down the adjustment lever. Also, if there is any bent components it would need to be replaced as well.
If at one point your one sway control device was able to help your trailer sway and now after you backed up with it attached it stopped working it would seem that the device is damaged and should be replaced.
